Abbas asks world leaders to stop Trump from moving US embassy to Jerusalem

PA leader Abbas is asking world leaders to prevent Trump from moving the US embassy to Jerusalem. 

Palestinian Authority (PA) Chairman Mahmoud Abbas sent letters to a number of government leaders around the world, asking them to ensure that US President-elect Donald Trump does not follow through with his stated goal to move the US embassy in Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

“Spare no effort in preventing the US embassy from moving to Jerusalem,” Abbas told the leaders of several countries, including Russia, China, France, UK, as well as to the European Union, the African Union, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and the Arab League, according to the Palestinian news agency Wafa.

The PA chairman also wrote to Trump specifically, claiming that such a move would “likely have a disastrous impact on the peace process, on the two-state solution and on the stability and security of the entire region.”

Abbas made similar remarks on Friday, referring to Trump’s stated position of moving the US embassy to Jerusalem as an “aggressive” one that “crossed a red line.” That same day, US Secretary of State John Kerry told CBS that moving the US embassy to Jerusalem would lead to an “absolute explosion” in Israel and the region as a whole.
