Analysis: European doublespeak on Abbas

Why did the Germans and the European Union suddenly discover Abbas’ anti-Semitism?

In a rare move, Germany and the European Union (EU) rebuked the PLO leader Mahmoud Abbas for his latest anti-Semitic remarks. Abbas blamed the Jews for the Holocaust and whitewashed 3,000 years of Jewish history in Israel.

Referring to the Holocaust, German Foreign Minister Heiku Maas stressed that his country was responsible for “one of the worst crimes in history” and “therefore, we must respond resolutely to any anti-Semitic expression.”

“The speech Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas delivered on 30 April contained unacceptable remarks concerning the origins of the Holocaust and Israel’s legitimacy,” an EU spokesperson stated.

Abbas’ “moderate” regime in Ramallah has for years been disseminating vile Jew-hatred and fighting against Israel’s existence, without upsetting the Europeans, who even largely fund activity against Israel’s interests in the name of “peace.”

So why did the Germans and the EU suddenly “discover” Abbas’ anti-Semitism? While Jew-hatred is officially banned in Europe, in practice it has been more than tolerated as long as it was carefully branded “anti-Zionism” and focused on the Jewish state without embarrassing references to the Holocaust. The same EU that annually commemorates the Holocaust of six million murdered Jews has willingly ignored and indirectly financed Ramallah’s genocidal Jew-hatred against more than six million living Jews in Israel. By bringing up the Holocaust with Israel, Abbas apparently crossed the line from “acceptable” Jew-hatred to unacceptable anti-Semitism that embarrassed the European leadership.

The EU spokesperson’s statement revealed the depth of the European hypocrisy. “Such rhetoric will only play into the hands of those who do not want a two-state solution, which President Abbas has repeatedly advocated,” he said.

The EU knows that this is a lie. While releasing duplicitous statements in English about “peace,” Abbas has for years embraced classic anti-Semitism and in Arabic incited against the Jewish state’s existence within any borders.

In 2016, Abbas received standing ovations in the EU parliament during a speech where he revived the old anti-Semitic blood libel by accusing Israeli rabbis of “poisoning” water used by Arabs in Judea and Samaria. In January 2018, Abbas called Israel a “European colonial project” and demanded that Britain apologize for the Balfour Declaration. Since the Holocaust was left out, it was largely ignored by the Europeans.

The same Europe that erects Holocaust memorials willingly trades with the genocidal Iranian regime that has called for Israel’s destruction. The dishonest double speak from Berlin and Brussels has disqualified Europe from any serious mediating role in resolving the Arab-Israeli conflict.
