Campus antisemitism dismissed as ‘Zionist plot’ in flawed academic review

Three leading Jewish organizations are condemning a National Communication Association review that dismisses the surge in campus antisemitism as a Zionist “invention” and instead accuses Jews of orchestrating attacks on academic freedom.

In its 44-page report, the NCA’s Task Force on Academic Freedom and Tenure depicts Israel as a “settler-colonial state” carrying out “genocidal violence” and argues that scholars who criticize Israel are being monitored by a network of “powerful donors, trustees, and politicians.”

Rather than acknowledging real harassment, it characterizes antisemitism complaints as a calculated effort to mute anti-Israel activism, framed through the lens of “white Western civility.”

Within that framework, Jewish or pro-Israel faculty raising concerns about antisemitism are recast as aggressors, while those engaging in anti-Israel activism are depicted as victims of a “repressive” Zionist system.

One of the report’s most controversial claims is that efforts to address antisemitic harassment on campus are being used as a pretext to deport international students and silence political dissent.

It argues that students who support Gaza are being labeled as terror threats due to “racialized” stereotypes driven by an effort to punish students for their political views.

Equally troubling is the task force’s call to explore ways to “place the necessary pressure on Israeli institutions,” which they say amounted to an endorsement of academic boycotts.

Such actions, they argued, punish scholars for their nationality and undermine the open exchange of ideas.

In a joint statement, the Anti-Defamation League, the American Jewish Committee, and the Academic Engagement Network said the task force document is saturated with conspiracy theories, ideologically driven rhetoric, and classic antisemitic tropes that invert reality and blame Jewish students for the hostility they are facing.

“This narrative is not only false but dangerous, reinforcing harmful patterns of victim-blaming that excuse wrongdoing and shift responsibility away from perpetrators,” they wrote.

“It draws directly from long-standing antisemitic tropes about Jewish influence operating behind the scenes to control institutions. The use of such language in a report ostensibly dedicated to safeguarding academic freedom is deeply irresponsible.”

All three Jewish advocacy groups called on the NCA to reject the report outright and ensure that any future scholarship avoids repeating stereotypes that have historically fueled antisemitism.

“A legitimate defense of academic freedom,” they cautioned, “must begin by taking antisemitism seriously—not by denying it or reframing it as a Zionist plot.”
