The Palestinian Authority’s foreign minister, Riyad al-Maliki, ‎announced on Wednesday that the PA will appeal to the United Nations ‎Security Council to gain recognition as a full member state of the U.N.

The request comes against the backdrop of the Security ‎Council’s quarterly discussion on the “Situation in the Middle East,” which is ‎expected to take place on January 15 and focus primarily on the ‎Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

In response to the PA’s announcement, Israel’s Ambassador to the ‎U.N. Danny Danon said that he is preparing to block the ‎Palestinian initiative in cooperation with the United States delegation, Israel’s Mission to the U.N. said. ‎‎

“Even as it continues to pay salaries to terrorists every month, encourage ‎violence and lead an unrelenting campaign of incitement against Israel, ‎the Palestinian Authority has the audacity to ask the Security Council to ‎recognize it as a full member state of the United Nations,” Danon stated.

“Instead of ‎focusing on building a better and more hopeful future for the Palestinians ‎and helping to ensure stability in the region, the Palestinian leadership is ‎continuing its destructive policies that have encouraged recent terror ‎attacks, including the murder of the four-day-old baby Amiad Yisrael,” he said, referring to the Palestinian shooting of a pregnant woman in the abdomen earlier this month. The premature infant was delivered in an emergency C-section but did not survive. ‎
