A former hostage released from Gaza nearly a month ago spoke out publicly for the first time this week in an interview with Israel’s Channel 13.

Mia Schem, a 21-year-old dual French-Israeli citizen and resident of the central Israeli city of Shoham and worked as a tattoo artist, was shot and kidnapped during the Nova music festival massacre in Re’im on October 7th.

During her 54 days in captivity, Schem said she was operated on by a veterinarian who used no anesthetics.

Schem described Gaza civilians she encountered in captivity as “terrorists” who abetted in her abuse.

“I went through a Holocaust,” Schem said. “Everyone over there is a terrorist.”

“It was important for me to reflect on the true situation of the people living in Gaza – who they are, and what I went through there.”

“These are families under Hamas. In retrospect, I suddenly realized that I was with a family. Suddenly, I started asking myself questions, why am I in a family’s house? Why are there children here? Why is there a woman here?”
