France calls Trump plan to move US embassy to Jerusalem a ‘provocation’

France’s Foreign Minister referred to Trump’s plan to move the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem as a ‘provocation’ that could lead to serious consequences.

France’s Foreign Minister Jean Marc Ayrault criticized US President-elect Donald Trump’s plan to move the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem as a “provocation” that would lead to negative repercussions.

“It would have extremely serious consequences,” he told France 3 television during Sunday’s Paris summit that is focusing on implementing a two-state solution for Israel and the Palestinian Authority (PA).

“One cannot have such a clear-cut, unilateral position,” he continued. “You have to create the conditions for peace.”

France, however, appeared to present a “clear-cut, unilateral position” over a year and a half ago, when Laurent Fabius, Ayrault’s predecessor, said his country would unilaterally recognize a state of Palestine if its initiative for Israel and the PA failed within a timeframe of 18 months.
