IDF soldier decorated posthumously for bravery

IDF soldier Staff Sgt. Tuvia Yanai Weissman on Tuesday was decorated posthumously for bravery he exhibited while confronting terrorists in a supermarket in the Binyamin region just north of Jerusalem in February.

Tuvia Yanai Weissman, 21, was a combat soldier shopping with his wife and daughter when two terrorists armed with knives began stabbing Israeli shoppers. Despite having no weapon at hand, he immediately and courageously rushed to help subdue the terrorists, but was murdered during the scuffle, in the presence of his wife and child.

Both terrorists were shot and one died of his wounds soon after.

Weissman received the citation during a special ceremony in Jerusalem, during which other soldiers and units were honored as well. His wife and brother received the citation in his stead.

Major-General Roni Numa, commander of the IDF’s central command, commended Weissman “who risked his life while leaving behind his daughter Neta and wife Yael, and ran with no weapon, but was equipped with the values on which the IDF, the State of Israel and the Jewish Nation’s traditions are founded.”
