‘Israel and Iran want an immediate ceasefire,’ Trump claims

Trump insisted a broader U.S.-Iran agreement remains within reach, despite escalating violence.

President Donald Trump claimed that Israel and Iran are currently seeking a swift end to the round of fighting that broke out late Sunday evening, writing on his Truth Social platform that “both sides” are in favor of an “immediate ceasefire.”

Trump’s post stated that “final negotiations” aimed at securing an agreement, which would halt the latest hostilities between the longtime regional adversaries, were proceeding rapidly.

“Things should move quickly,” the president added in the Monday afternoon post.

Earlier on Monday, Trump wrote that Jerusalem and Tehran “must immediately stop shooting,” in an uncharacteristically brief message.

The statement came after Iran launched several barrages of missiles at Israel late Sunday night, claiming that an earlier Israeli strike on Hezbollah infrastructure in Lebanon justified the attack.

In recent weeks, Iran has intensified its rhetoric, warning that it would take increasingly severe measures to protect its largest proxy, the Lebanon-based Hezbollah terror group, including direct military action against Israel if the Jewish state targeted the organization.

That scenario unfolded on Sunday when Iran fired multiple ballistic missiles toward northern and southern Israel several hours after Israel bombed Dahiyeh, a Hezbollah stronghold in Beirut where the terror group operates command centers from civilian apartment buildings.

Shortly after the Iranian attack, Trump told Axios that he wanted to de-escalate the conflict and urged Israel not to retaliate.

In the same conversation with Axios, Trump reiterated his claim that the United States and Iran are close to reaching a long-term ceasefire agreement that would also restore maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.

Trump said that “we are very close to a final deal with Iran. It is going to be a good deal.”

He added that he didn’t “want it to blow up because of what is happening now.”
