Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has asked the government to extend Israeli Ambassador to the US Ron Dermer’s five-year term by another year.

According to Ynet, Netanyahu’s proposal was circulated to the ministers ahead of Sunday’s upcoming cabinet meeting, and it was based on “unique political circumstances in the international arena in general and in light of our relationship with the US in particular.”

“As part of his tenure as Israel’s ambassador to the US, Mr. Dermer has wisely established a quality widespread network of connections which enables him to promote the State of Israel’s main goals with the US administration and Congress,” Netanyahu wrote in the proposal.

“In light of these unique political circumstances, Dermer’s tenure as Israel’s ambassador to the US should be extended by another year, and so creating a sequence of six years to the position,” Netanyahu concluded.

Dermer is considered a close confidant of Netanyahu, and his three-year term has already been extended twice.

The cabinet is expected to approve the proposal.
