Plans being drafted for fast train from Tel Aviv to Western Wall

Will a high speed train bring travelers to the Western Wall in record time? Transport Minister Yisrael Katz hopes so.

Transport Minister Yisrael Katz has instructed the ministry’s staff to go ahead with the planning of a train line to the Kotel, the Western Wall, in the heart of Jerusalem. The new line would be an extension of the new high-speed railway line from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

The plans include the building of an underground station in the vicinity of the holy site and digging tunnels for two kilometers at a depth of 80 meters from Jerusalem’s main station at Binyanei Ha’Uma at the entrance to the city.

Katz said the new line should significantly decrease congestion at the Binyanei Ha’Uma station and enable tourists, students, and anyone who wishes to reach the Western Wall to do so in an easy and quick fashion from central Israel.
