Rouhani opposed to writing anti-Israel messages on missiles

During a presidential debate on Friday, Iran’s president accused the Iranian Revolutionary Guard of attempting to disrupt the 2015 nuclear agreement.

Iranian president Hassan Rouhani criticized the decision of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard to write anti-Israel messages on missiles that were tested, as he debated five other presidential candidates on Friday.

“We saw how they wrote slogans on missiles and showed underground (missile cities) to disrupt the JCPOA (Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action/Iran nuclear agreement),” said Rouhani. “They wrote messages on the missiles so that we won’t be able to reap its benefits.”

“Our nation got through these issues because the majority of society chose morality and Islam from day one,” Rouhani added.

Iranian Armed Forces spokesman General Masoud Jazayeri rejected Rouhani’s assertions that the messages on the missiles had any connection to the nuclear agreement that was reached in 2015 between Iran and the P5 +1 powers (United States, United Kingdom, France, China, Russia and Germany). Instead, he pointed to the “important deterrent factor” of the missile sites.

“The existence of underground missile sites are an important deterrent factor against the sworn enemies of the Islamic Republic of Iran and the nation,” Jazayeri said.

“We again stress and recommend the presidential candidates to avoid controversial entries into important and sensitive military and defense issues of the country and giving false information to people,” said Jazayeri, according to the website of the state broadcaster IRIB.

Rouhani also accused some of his contenders of celebrating Donald Trump’s US presidency with hopes that he would rip up the nuclear agreement.

“When Trump took office you were celebrating because he said he would tear up the deal,” Rouhani charged according to AFP. “Today people should know whether sanctions and confrontation are coming back or not.”
