28 Israel Air Force (IAF) F-15 and F-16 fighter jets participated in a massive airstrike on Iranian targets in Syria and some 70 rockets were fired, according to the Russian Defense Ministry.

The Ministry on Thursday released details on the massive Israeli strike against Iranian military targets inside Syria, which was carried out in retaliation to a Quds Forces rocket attack on Israel’s Golan Heights.

As part of the wide-scale attack, said to be the largest in decades and possibly since the 1973 Yom Kippur War, the IAF struck Quds Force intelligence centers, Quds Force logistical command centers, a Quds Force military center and a Quds Force logistical center in Al-Kiswah, as well as an Iranian military base north of Damascus.

The Russian Defense Ministry said that the Syrian air defenses shot down more than half of 70 missiles fired by Israel.

The Syrian army claimed its air defenses “repelled an Israeli missile aggression on Syrian territories, shooting down scores of missiles.”

A military source quoted by Syria’s official SANA news said the army’s air defenses shot down “tens of Israeli missiles, preventing most of them from reaching their targets,” while some managed to hit a number of air defense battalions, radars and an ammunitions depot.

In response to the Syrian intervention, the IAF attacked a number of Syrian aerial interception systems, including SA-5, SA-17, SA-22, SA-2 batteries.

During the strike, which lasted some two hours, the IDF also fired over 10 surface-to-surface tactical missiles at Iranian targets, “on pretext of relation for attacks on its positions in the Golan Heights area by Iranian units,” the Russian Defense Ministry said.

The IDF stated after the attack that it will take the Iranians a long time to recover from the strikes, while Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman said that “we hit nearly all the Iranian infrastructure in Syria.”
