‘Do you want to die?’ – Assailant attacks group of Jewish men outside of Chabad – Lubavitch headquarters in Brooklyn, stabbing one.

One person was wounded in an apparent hate crime incident outside of the headquarters of the world’s largest Hasidic movement over the weekend.

The stabbing occurred in the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn at approximately 2:00 a.m. Saturday, when the assailant confronted a group of Jewish men near 770 Eastern Parkway, the center of operations of the Chabad – Lubavitch Hasidic movement.

Apparently attempting to provoke the men as they passed by him on the street, the assailant shouting “Free Palestine,” as well as a series of antisemitic slurs.

The men ignored him, according to a report by COLLive, a news site catering to the Chabad community, and the suspect turned his attention to another group of passersby.

Harassing them and making death threats, the suspect attacked several young men, shouting “Do you want to die?”

Drawing a knife, the suspect stabbed one young man and attempted to stab another.

When the Jewish men confronted him, the assailant fled, prompting several of the men targeted to pursue the suspect, as others called to officers positioned in the area.

The suspect was apprehended following the chase and taken into police custody.

He has been identified as 22-year-old Vincent Sumpter.

Emergency first responders were dispatched to the scene to treat the wounded man and evacuate him to a local hospital.

The victim is in stable condition and “is expected to recover due to the location of the stabbing and the quick response of paramedics,” wrote Rabbi Yaacov Behrman, a Chabad activist in a social media post.

“This is an extremely serious incident,” Berhman continued. “The victim could have been killed. This act of hateful violence highlights the dangerous impact of anti-Semitic incitement and hate propagated by some local politicians and leaders in New York and across the United States.”

The father of a Canadian man who attempted a terror stabbing in southern Israel posted on social media that he was left “confused” by his son’s actions, claiming that he was an “empathetic” and kind person.

On Monday, 21-year-old Zachareah Adam Quraishi landed at Ben-Gurion Airport, rented a white Hyundai, and drove to the Gaza-adjacent moshav Netiv HaAsara.

Once he arrived at the gate, which was manned by armed members of the agricultural community’s security staff, he began screaming “Free Palestine” and that the IDF “is committing genocide in Gaza.”

After exiting the vehicle with a knife drawn and charging towards the security forces, he was shot and killed at the scene.

A Canadian passport and a suicide note – the contents of which were not made public – were recovered from his body.

“My 21-year-old son Zachareah was killed. I’m not able to talk now… I’m processing… Prayers pls [please]. He was an empathetic boy. I’m confused,” Adam Quraishi, the terrorist’s father, wrote on Facebook.

The elder Qaraishi, a teacher, describes himself as a “proud gay single dad” living in Alberta, Canada, in his Instagram bio.

Photos to posted to the Quarishi’s social media accounts depicted numerous family outings, including with the son who attempted the stabbing.

Hebrew-language media reported that there was no indication on either of the Qaraishi’s social media profiles that they support terror or Islamic extremism.

But Canadian-born MK Sharren Hasskel said that the fact that terrorist was from Canada should not come as a surprise.

“The spread of radical Islam and extremist ideologies in Canada has created major cultural challenges for the country, including a plague of antisemitism that has spread, making it unsafe for Jews and Canadians to live their day-to-day lives without the fear of being attacked verbally and physically,” Haskel told the National Post.

“With the lack of law enforcement and a turning a blind eye to the rise of hatred and violence by radical Muslims, Canada has become a hotbed for terrorists who are operating within and outside of Canada.”

Swiss police revealed the Tunisian immigrant was a habitué of online Islamist chat rooms.

The teenager who seriously wounded an Orthodox Jewish man in an antisemitic stabbing attack in Zurich earlier this month was radicalized on the internet while living in Tunisia, Swiss police announced on Monday.

The 50-year-old victim, who has not been named, was badly injured during the March 2 attack but survived his ordeal. The attack, described by Swiss Federation of Jewish Communities (SIG) as the most serious antisemitic hate crime in Switzerland in two decades, caused widespread shock and concern among the approximately 18,000 Jews in the country, resulting in enhanced security for Jewish sites in Zurich.

The 15-year-old assailant, who was arrested at the scene of the attack, had already been identified by police as having appeared in a video in which he expressed solidarity with the ISIS terrorist organization and called for a “battle against the Jews.”

Speaking on Monday, Mario Fehr, the head of the police department in the Zurich canton, revealed that the assailant was a Tunisian immigrant who was naturalized in 2011. Between 2017 and 2021, he lived in Tunisia, where, according to Fehr, he became a habitué of Islamist chat rooms online. The teenager remains in pre-trial detention.

“There is a strong link with Tunisia,” Fehr commented.

In common with other countries in Europe, antisemitic outrages in Switzerland have rocketed in the wake of the Oct. 7 Hamas pogrom in Israel.

About 114 of the antisemitic incidents in Switzerland last year occurred after Oct. 7, according to data gathered by the SIG. Antisemitic incidents also picked up online, with 975 registered cases in 2023, up from 853 the previous year. Nearly half of the 2023 incidents were logged after Oct. 7, the SIG found.

Following the stabbing of the Jewish man in Zurich, Swiss Jewish leaders expressed concern that the severity of the situation facing the community had not been grasped by the wider population.

“The fact that such an event does not generate a national outcry is a real problem,” said Johanne Gurfinkiel, the secretary-general of Cicad, an NGO that monitors antisemitism.
