Apple has acquired Q.ai, an Israeli startup building audio-focused AI that can help devices understand whispered speech and clean up sound in tough environments.

The purchase price wasn’t disclosed, but people familiar with the deal put it around $1.6 billion, with other reporting suggesting it could be closer to $2 billion—making it one of Apple’s largest acquisitions ever.

What Apple is really buying here isn’t just “better mics.” Q.ai has been working on new machine-learning approaches that can pick up speech when it’s barely spoken at all and enhance audio in chaotic real-world settings—wind, crowds, vehicles, and the kind of noise that breaks voice assistants and ruins calls.

For Apple, that’s a direct line into the most personal interface it has left to win: voice, earbuds, and wearable computing.

The more provocative piece is what Q.ai has signaled in its patent activity.

The company filed a patent application describing the use of “facial skin micromovements” to detect mouthed or spoken words, identify a person, and even assess emotion and other physiological indicators like heart rate and respiration.

In plain English: a path toward “silent speech” interaction—communicating with a device without speaking out loud—potentially through sensors embedded in headphones, glasses, or other wearables.

Apple hasn’t said where this lands first, but the direction is obvious. The company has been steadily layering intelligence into AirPods, including language translation features, and Q.ai’s core promise slots right into the next generation of always-on, always-worn products.

If Apple wants Siri and Apple Intelligence to feel less like an app you summon and more like a companion that’s just there—understanding you in a whisper on a train platform or in a quiet room where speaking would be awkward—this acquisition is a shortcut.

There’s also a distinctly Israeli tech story inside the deal. Q.ai’s team—about 100 employees—will join Apple, including CEO Aviad Maizels and co-founders Yonatan Wexler and Avi Barliya.

Maizels is a familiar name in Apple’s own modern history: he founded PrimeSense, the 3D sensing firm Apple bought in 2013, a deal that ultimately helped Apple move from fingerprint sensors toward facial recognition.

Apple’s hardware chief Johnny Srouji called Q.ai “a remarkable company” pioneering new ways to use imaging and machine learning, and Maizels framed the move as a chance to “push boundaries” and bring the technology to people everywhere.

That’s the public language. The strategic subtext is bigger: voice is the battleground for AI assistants, and Apple needs its interface to be faster, more private, and more reliable than rivals—especially as competitors push smart glasses and always-on assistants into daily life.

If Q.ai’s work delivers, it could unlock a new kind of human-computer interaction for Apple: less typing, less talking, more subtle control—an assistant that hears you when you don’t want anyone else to.
