The discoveries were made during ongoing excavations led by the Civil Administration’s Archaeology Unit in cooperation with the Binyamin Regional Council. Archaeologists say the finds provide new evidence of Jewish religious life at the ancient biblical site, where the Tabernacle stood before the First Temple was built in Jerusalem.

Officials said the discoveries reinforce the deep historical connection between the Jewish people and Shiloh, with some of the artifacts recovered through a unique archaeological soil-sifting project involving local youth. The findings come during the Three Weeks, the annual period of mourning leading up to Tisha B’Av, when Jews commemorate the destruction of the First and Second Temples.

The rare busts, believed to depict prominent figures from the Greco-Roman world, were found face-down in what archaeologists believe was a desperate attempt to save them from destruction as Christianity spread across the Roman Empire and pagan monuments were systematically destroyed. The statues were discovered on the very last day of excavations, leaving researchers stunned.

Unearthed during work on Israel’s new high-speed railway near Binyamina, the statues may have once decorated an elite Roman villa near Caesarea before vanishing for more than a millennium. Their identities—and the reason they were hidden so carefully—remain unsolved, adding another layer of mystery to one of Israel’s most remarkable archaeological discoveries in years.

The mysterious blue “Nicolo” stone, a prized gemstone associated with Roman-era wealth and prestige, was found just minutes before the dig ended. Archaeologists believe it was once set in an expensive piece of jewelry, offering a glimpse into the lives of the village’s affluent residents nearly two millennia ago.

Buried beneath the ancient village for centuries, the precious gemstone remained hidden from the world until a young Israeli boy uncovered one of its long-lost secrets.
