Thomas Massie’s amendment to cut military aid to Israel last week.

By Joseph Strauss, JTA

Pro-Israel Rep. Greg Stanton easily won his Arizona Democratic primary on Tuesday night, staving off a challenge from activist and democratic socialist Kai Newkirk, who had made Israel and AIPAC a focal point in his campaign.

“This campaign presented voters with a real choice about how Democrats should lead,” Stanton said in a statement posted on his election campaign page after initial results reported by multiple media outlets showed he received 68.1% of the votes compared to Newkirk’s 31.9%.

“Tonight,” Stanton continued, the voters “chose proven leadership that fights back, delivers real results, and brings our party together.”

Stanton, a former Phoenix mayor who was first elected to Congress in 2018, will now face Republican challenger Zuhdi Jasser in November’s general elections.

Newkirk, 45, whose organizing has largely focused on campaign finance reform, has repeatedly blasted Stanton’s support from the pro-Israel lobbying group AIPAC.

He has also accused the Israeli government itself of “trying to interfere in our elections,” including in Arizona’s 4th Congressional District, where he is running and which covers parts of Phoenix and Maricopa County.

He pointed to a $45 million text message campaign to improve Israel’s image in the U.S. as a sign of such interference and posited that “they may be targeting areas where AIPAC is more invested or where these issues are more at stake.”

“I’ve been arrested over 25 times in civil disobedience — and I’ll go to jail for justice again before I ever take a dime from AIPAC,” Newkirk wrote on X last week, referring to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee.

The result comes as a number of left-wing congressional candidates with sharply critical Israel stances have won the Democratic nomination around the country and as Israel and AIPAC grow increasingly unpopular among Democratic voters.

The most recent poll on the Arizona race, commissioned by a group that favors Newkirk, had Stanton up by 8 percentage points, while another poll, conducted two weeks earlier by a group favoring Stanton, showed the incumbent ahead by 33 points.

Newkirk’s platform includes ending all military aid to Israel and imposing an arms embargo on the country, which he accuses of genocide.

Stanton, 56, a four-term incumbent, voted against Kentucky Rep. Thomas Massie’s amendment to cut military aid to Israel last week.

Newkirk criticized Stanton, saying that he would have voted for the amendment, and suggested that Stanton’s vote was the result of his support from AIPAC.

“Greg Stanton has taken over $300K from AIPAC,” Newkirk wrote. “And today—as so many Americans in our district and across the country struggle to get by—he just voted to send billions more of our tax dollars to Israel to fund their war crimes and genocide. Disgraceful.”

Among AIPAC’s endorsees in Congress, more than a dozen voted to cut aid to Israel last week; AIPAC has since removed the option on its website to donate to those candidates.

Stanton explained his vote on X, saying that the amendment “would undermine America’s ability to counter real threats from Iran” and weaken the ability to promote long-term stability across the region.

He also criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and wrote that “clear change is necessary” as the U.S.-Israel security agreement, which includes $3.8 billion in annual military subsidies for Israel, nears its expiration in 2028.

Newkirk is endorsed by progressive groups such as Our Revolution, Track AIPAC, and the Progressive Democrats of America.

Also among Newkirk’s endorsers is Cenk Uygur, the host of the Young Turks who has spread conspiracy theories about Israel. “Kai is an Israeli free and has fought to get money out of politics his whole life,” wrote Uygur last month.

Newkirk has faced turbulence in establishing broader support.

The Young Democrats of Arizona pulled its endorsement of Newkirk earlier in July, writing that it had been “made aware of some concerning patterns of behavior” displayed by Newkirk, without specifying what it meant.

Newkirk did not respond to the Jewish Telegraphic Agency’s request for comment.

After the Young Democrats of Arizona retracted its endorsement, Newkirk wrote that the withdrawal of the endorsement was based on a false report amid “a wave of wins by democratic socialists” and called it a “weaponization of … disavowed misinformation.”

Newkirk did speak out against last year’s killing of two Israeli Embassy staffers outside the Capital Jewish Museum in Washington, D.C.

“I stand always with my beloved Jewish siblings against the scourge of antisemitism, just as I will never stop in the nonviolent struggle to end the genocide in Gaza, release all hostages, and open the way to just, lasting peace,” he said.

By World Israel News Staff

An Arizona man was sentenced recently to four years and one month in prison after he engaged in an aggressive campaign of antisemitic harassment against a Jewish-owned hotel in New York City.

On Thursday, Donovan Hall, 35, of Mesa, Arizona, was sentenced by the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York to 49 months in prison after he was found guilty of making interstate threats and stalking victims in New York City.

According to court filings, over the course of three months in 2024, Hall engaged in a “calculated campaign of antisemitic rhetoric,” harassing a Jewish family who owns the Blue Moon Hotel, a hotel in Manhattan, over their sons’ service in the Israeli military.

Hall also targeted hotel staff members during his campaign of harassment.

From August to November 2024, Hall made dozens of phone calls in which he made antisemitic death threats to the family and to hotel staffers.

In addition, Hall sent hundreds of threatening messages, some featuring photographs of weapons, in which he threatened to torture, mutilate, rape, and murder his intended victims.

In one message, Hall sent a photograph of two handguns, with the message, “For the Zionist cowards.”

In another, he sent a photograph of a large knife and a pistol with the caption, “This knife is for child molesters such as your son.”

Randy Settenbrino, the owner of the Blue Moon Hotel and the primary target of Hall’s death threats, described to the court the intense fear he and his family endured during the three-month period of harassment last year, noting that Hall pointed out in his threats that he was aware of the family’s home address.

“Hall contacted us over a thousand times,” Settenbrino said. “He called our business, our home, and my personal cellphone often dozens of times a day, including in the middle of the night.”

“He would say that he was outside our door or ‘on the way,’ threatening to kill us, mutilate us, and rape our staff. He repeated our home address aloud during his threats – a chilling reminder that he knew exactly where we lived. We were living in a state of relentless fear.”

Speaking with The Jerusalem Post on Monday, Settenbrino said Hall was provoked by the fact that two of Settenbrino’s sons are reservist soldiers in the IDF.

During the visit, Glassman met with Israeli officials on counterterrorism, including Roi Cahlon, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s head of counterterrorism.

By Pesach Benson, TPS

Arizona politician Rodney Glassman recently returned from a seven-day trip to Israel that left him profoundly impressed and deeply aware of security challenges.

Organized by U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee and Larry Mizel, chairman of the Museum of Tolerance Jerusalem, the 20-member delegation visited key sites before attending a private Shabbat dinner with Huckabee at the King David Hotel.

The trip, initially planned for June, was postponed to September due to Israel’s conflict with Iran.

Glassman, who also serves as a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Air Force JAG Corps Reserve, said lessons from Israel could guide Arizona’s approach to border security.

“Experiencing Israel and its ability to secure its borders and provide tremendous safety for its citizens in urban areas through the use of technology and counter-intelligence are strategies that can be leveraged more effectively in Arizona,” he told The Press Service of Israel.

“The Arizona attorney general is the chief law enforcement officer and works hand in hand with the 15 elected county sheriffs and county attorneys who are in charge of prosecuting crimes.”

During the visit, Glassman met with Israeli officials on counterterrorism, including Roi Cahlon, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s head of counterterrorism.

“We spoke about our shared interest in treating organized criminal enterprises that facilitate human trafficking and drugs as terrorist organizations,” he said.

“In Arizona, part of my attorney general platform is to mirror Israel’s efforts to have the federal government work with local law enforcement because what happens at the border doesn’t stop at the border.”

He also highlighted Israel’s use of technology and intelligence.

“By leveraging relationships in Israel and best practices, and using information from organizations such as MEMRI, we can track imams in Arizona mosques and shut down hate speech that incites violence,” Glassman said.

Arizonans go to the polls in 2026.

Drawing parallels to U.S. security concerns, he added, “Yes, even with armed citizens and a strong military presence, an assassination like the one that killed Charlie Kirk could easily happen in Israel.”

Despite being postponed by war, the embassy’s main event was still interrupted by a Houthi missile alert.

“One hour after Israel’s courageous attack on Hamas leadership in Doha, as the festivities to celebrate the 249th birthday of the United States proceeded, a missile alert sounded in the middle of speeches at the Museum of Tolerance Jerusalem,” Glassman told The Press Service of Israel.

“Ambassador Huckabee, the Speaker of the Knesset, and over 2,500 guests immediately shuffled into the building, down crowded staircases, and into the basement for shelter.”

The missile was intercepted without damage but left a strong impression.

“This experience reminded me how lucky we, as Jews, are to have President Trump at the helm of our nation, serving as a consistent voice, resource, and ally to the Jewish State of Israel,” Glassman said.

“It also reinforced the constant danger and vigilance that make up the lives of Israelis and their families, surrounded by enemies who can strike at any time.”

By The Associated Press

Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs has vetoed a proposal that would have banned teaching antisemitism at the state’s public K-12 schools, universities and colleges and exposed educators who violate the new rules to discipline and lawsuits.

The proposal would have prohibited teachers and administrators from teaching or promoting antisemitism or antisemitic actions that create a hostile environment, calling for the genocide of any group, or requiring students to advocate for an antisemitic point of view.

It also would have barred public schools from using public money to support the teaching of antisemitism.

Educators would have personally been responsible for covering the costs of damages in lawsuits for violating the rules.

Hobbs, a Democrat, said Tuesday that the bill was not about antisemitism but rather about attacking teachers.

“It puts an unacceptable level of personal liability in place for our public school, community college, and university educators and staff, opening them up to threats of personally costly lawsuits,” she said in a statement.

“Additionally, it sets a dangerous precedent that unfairly targets public school teachers while shielding private school staff.”

Hobbs described antisemitism as a very troubling issue in the U.S., but said students and parents can go through the state’s Board of Education to report antisemitism.

The measure cleared the Legislature last week on a 33-20 vote by the House, including a few Democrats who crossed party lines to support it. It’s one of a few proposals to combat antisemitism across the country.

Democrats tried but failed to remove the lawsuit provision and swap out references to antisemitism within the bill with “unlawful discrimination” to reflect other discrimination.

The bill’s chief sponsor, Republican Rep. Michael Way, of Queen Creek, called the veto “disgraceful,” saying on the social media platform X that the legislation was meant to keep “egregious and blatant antisemitic content” out of the classroom.

“To suggest that it threatened the speech of most Arizona teachers is disingenuous at best,” he added.

Opponents said the bill aimed to silence people who want to speak out on the oppression of Palestinians and opened up educators to personal legal liability in lawsuits students could file.

Students over the age of 18 and the parents of younger pupils would have been able to file lawsuits over violations that create a hostile education environment, leaving teachers responsible for paying any damages that may be awarded, denying them immunity and prohibiting the state from paying any judgments arising from any such lawsuits.

Last week, Lori Shepherd, executive director of Tucson Jewish Museum & Holocaust Center, wrote in a letter to Hobbs that if the bill were approved, it would threaten teachers’ ability to provide students with a full account of the holocaust.

Under the bill, “those discussions could be deemed ‘antisemitic’ depending on how a single phrase is interpreted, regardless of intent or context,” she said.

The bill would have created a process for punishing those who break the rules.

At K-12 schools, a first-offense violation would lead to a reprimand, a second offense to a suspension of a teacher or principal’s certificate and a third offense to a revocation of the certificate.

At colleges and universities, violators would have faced a reprimand on first offense, a suspension without pay for a second offense and termination for a third offense.

The proposal also would have required colleges and universities to consider violations by employees to be a negative factor when making employment or tenure decisions.

Under the proposal, universities and colleges couldn’t recognize any student organization that invites a guest speaker who incites antisemitism, encourages its members to engage in antisemitism or calls for the genocide of any group.

Elsewhere in the U.S., a Louisiana lawmaker is pushing a resolution that asks universities to adopt policies to combat antisemitism on campuses and collect data on antisemitism-related reports and complaints.

And a Michigan lawmaker has proposed putting a definition of antisemitism into the state’s civil rights law.

By Andrew Bernard, JNS

The Arizona state Senate passed legislation on Wednesday that would allow public school students to sue their teachers for Jew-hatred.

HB 2867 adopts the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA)’s working definition of antisemitism and forbids education officials from propagating any “antisemitism or antisemitic conduct, act or process that constitutes harassment or discrimination and that creates a hostile educational environment.”

“For a first offense, issue a formal reprimand,” the act states. “For a second offense, suspend the teacher’s or principal’s certificate.”

A third offense would result in the revocation of a teaching certificate.

Arizona’s largest teachers’ union and a coalition of other advocacy organizations opposed the legislation and said that it fails to address other forms of bigotry, including Islamophobia and bias against the Mormon church.

“Bill 2867 will transform classroom misunderstandings into costly legal battles, encourage disgruntled individuals to harass and extort educators and push hard-working professionals out of the classroom,” the union and its partners wrote in a letter to Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs, a Democrat.

“In a state where salaries are already too low, this bill will create a powerful disincentive to teach in Arizona,” the groups wrote.

Some lawmakers also said that the legislation would silence criticism of Israel.

“It is part of a broader effort to falsely and slanderously associate advocating for Palestinian human rights with antisemitism, which is a dangerous and offensive conflation,” said Analise Ortiz, a state senator and a Democrat.

Republican backers of the bill asked why educators should be able to instruct students with content that the IHRA definition, and its contemporary examples, deem antisemitic.

John Kavanagh, a Republican state senator, stated that he was “curious” which of the IHRA contemporary examples those who voted against the bill thought that teachers ought to be able to do.

The bill passed the Arizona state Senate 16-12, with all Democrats opposed and all but one Republican in favor. A previous version passed the House in March with bipartisan support.

The legislation will now return to the Arizona state House for a final vote on the Senate’s amendments before passage to the governor for signing into law.

By Jewish Breaking News

Tucson police have launched an investigation after antisemitic graffiti was discovered on a historic synagogue this week.

Members of Chabad Tucson-Young Israel arrived for morning prayers around 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday to find purple spray-painted messages reading “End Apartheid” and “Abolish Israel” on the wall directly beneath the synagogue’s Star of David emblem.

“As we’re driving in, we see this very hurtful graffiti on our exterior wall,” Associate Rabbi Yehuda Ceitlin told local 13 News. “It made the prayer very different following that.”

Built in 1948 as Congregation Young Israel, the building holds historical significance as Arizona’s first Orthodox Jewish synagogue before merging with Chabad Tucson.

By late afternoon, nearly two dozen volunteers gathered with paint supplies to remove the graffiti.

Despite the shock and pain caused by the vandalism, Ceitlin emphasized the community’s resolve to respond constructively.

“We’re involving their mind, their heart, their hands, their feet, everything is involved in trying to do better and make this world a better place,” he said.

Local Jewish leaders note this incident isn’t isolated.

Last November, vandals struck Catalina in Pima County, Arizona, twice in under a week, defacing mailboxes on Golder Ranch Road and later spray-painting backward swastikas, the word “Jews,” and Donald Trump’s name on a Cloud Nine Drive street sign.

According to the Anti-Defamation League, antisemitic incidents have risen 23% since Oct 7, 2023, when Hamas launched its deadly massacre against Israel, killing over 1,200 innocent civilians.

By Batya Jerenberg, World Israel News

A suspect was arrested Thursday for an arson attack on a combined synagogue and Jewish community center in Casa Grande, Arizona, earlier in the week.

Everardo Gregorio, 30, was identified from security footage from inside the Kahal Chasidim Jewish Community Center and nearby businesses that detectives reviewed after the fire broke out before dawn last Monday.

The videos showed him “walking on and around the property three different times throughout the night,” the police report said.

The last time he was seen was just three minutes before smoke began emanating from the building.

According to the local Fox 10 News, when the authorities arrested the local man, “he was wearing the same brand and style of sandals seen on the video.”

The suspect, who has had run-ins with the law in the past, denied all involvement in the incident, saying he was asleep at the time “and had nothing to do with it,” the report said.

The one-floor building, which also contained a kosher grocery store and classrooms, had just been renovated, according to local reports.

Both the interior and the exterior of the building were severely damaged by the flames, which firefighters battled for some two hours before it was successfully extinguished.

An ABC affiliate reported that the “owner” of the property said that the synagogue’s Torah scroll was not inside at the time, a fact that he had called “a blessing.”

The head of the Center, Rabbi Mendy Deitsch, told Yeshiva World News, “We’re devastated, but we’re not broken. This is a place of unity and strength, and we will rebuild.”

The Jewish community has received “an outpouring of support from neighbors and friends across Casa Grande,” the rabbi said. “It’s a testament to the spirit here.”

“This is a setback, but it’s not the end,” he added. “We’ll come back stronger.”

The community numbers only about 500 people, most of them ultra-Orthodox families who reportedly only recently came to the small city of 64,000 located about halfway between Phoenix and Tucson, the state’s two biggest population centers.

The police have yet to provide a motive for the attack, and Gregorio is so far only accused of felony arson of an occupied structure.

His next court appearance is set for Friday.

The abortive excellent adventure that Mohamed and Hussein tried to embark upon demonstrates yet again the importance of Trump’s concerns about unvetted mass migration.

By Robert Spencer, Frontpage Magazine

Like the Beatles’ Jo-Jo, Ahmed Mahad Mohamed left his home in Tucson, Arizona, but he wasn’t in search of California grass.

Instead, young Mohamed had a loftier aspiration in mind: he wanted to become a great warrior for Allah, wielding his righteous sword to cast off the heads of the enemies of Islam until he was killed and taken up to paradise, where the famous heavenly virgins would be waiting to greet him.

It wasn’t the most common career path for a young man from Tucson, but this is not Barry Goldwater’s Arizona, and Mohamed was able to find at least one companion of like mind, a brother in Islam named Abdi Yemeni Hussein.

Together, they set out to join ISIS. Now, they’ve been sentenced to prison.

The abortive excellent adventure that Mohamed and Hussein tried to embark upon demonstrates yet again the importance of Trump’s concerns about unvetted mass migration.

When the Justice Department announced recently that Mohamed and Hussein had been sentenced for Conspiracy to Provide Material Support and Resources to a Designated Foreign Terrorist Organization, it mentioned in passing that both men were “citizens of Somalia who were living in Tucson at the time of the offense.”

That was all the DOJ had to say about that, and more’s the pity. How long had these two been in Tucson? Did they learn about Islam there, and if so, from where and whom in particular? Or did they bring their jihadi sentiments with them from Somalia?

Either way, their story should be a cautionary tale, although it’s extremely unlikely that anyone is looking at it that.

If they learned about Islam in a way that made them want to join in ISIS from an imam or someone else in Tucson, the place where this teaching is going on should be shut down before it produces any more jihadis.

And if they were already jihad-minded before they came here from Somalia, they are yet more evidence that the government’s studied willful ignorance regarding the jihad threat is dangerous, and that vetting procedures that try to discern if someone trying to enter the U.S. is a jihadi should urgently be instituted.

Chief U.S. District Judge Jennifer G. Zipps sentenced Mohamed was sentenced to eleven years in prison, and Hussein to eight years.

After they serve these sentences, or whatever fragment of them officials deem sufficient, they are to be deported back to Somalia, “followed by lifetime terms of supervised release.”

That’s a curious condition. Is someone actually going to go to Somalia and watch these guys to make sure that they don’t end up joining ISIS or some other jihad group there?

Trump just struck ISIS in Somalia on Saturday, so by the time they get there, they may not have any organization to join, but at least Ilhan Omar will be looking out for their best interests.

For the aspiring jihadis, all this is a big comedown. Once upon a time, they had very big plans.

The DOJ notes that “from late 2018 or early 2019 until their arrest on July 26, 2019, Mohamed and Hussein conspired with each other to travel to Egypt for the purpose of fighting for ISIS in the Sinai Peninsula.”

Mohamed started during the summer of 2018 to chat online with other supporters of the Islamic State. He told them about his big dream: to travel to territory that the Islamic State still controlled, even though Trump had destroyed the caliphate they once had in Iraq and Syria, and become “the beheading guy.”

The Qur’an guarantees a place in paradise to those who “kill and are killed” for Allah (9:111), and Mohamed hoped ultimately to be killed while going about his beheading duties, and attain that promised bliss.

In the meantime, he was determined to “fight jihad.” His friend Hussein was a trifle less starry-eyed, and warned that if he and Mohamed simply had to make it into ISIS territory, “or we go to jail.” Right you are, Hussein. He also “suggested attacking the White House if they were prevented from traveling.”

Their grand plan came to naught. On July 26, 2019, with Mohamed carrying $10,000 for their travel expenses and weapons, they checked in at the Tucson International Airport, got through security without a hitch, and made their way to their departure gate. Once they got to Egypt, they planned to travel to the Sinai Peninsula and join up with their ISIS brethren.

Sometimes, however, Allah has crueler plans in mind for his slaves. Just as they were about to board their flight, the Tucson jihadis were arrested. And now, instead of laying Allah’s enemies low and hurling their heads into the dust, they will be languishing in the prisons of the Great Satan. But who are they to question the will of Allah?

By Batya Jerenberg, World Israel News

The U.S. District Court in Arizona on Friday rejected a lawsuit brought by student protestors against their university over their suspension due to their anti-Israel activities on campus.

Twenty students wanted the court to force the Arizona State University (ASU) Board of Regents to reinstate them due to the “irreparable harm” it was causing them not to attend class.

One of them, a senior, will not be able to graduate due to the suspension.

They also alleged that their First Amendment rights to free speech had been abrogated by the administrative move that followed their arrest for trespassing after they refused to leave the pro-Hamas encampment they participated in along with hundreds of other protestors.

Their lawyer, David Chami, told ABC News that ASU’s decision to suspend was made “even before they had all the evidence, all the facts,” which is “contrary to what we do in this country — innocent until proven guilty, right?”

However, Judge John Tuchi ruled that the plaintiffs had not presented sufficient evidence of either claim, and refused to grant a temporary injunction that would allow them back into class.

The trespassing charge was not addressed at this time.

Some 50 other students, faculty members and outsiders had also been detained overnight April 26 after refusing the college administration’s demand to clear the lawn they had occupied the previous day.

The police entered after the protestors had been clearly told that they were violating the university’s campus-use policies and the Student Code of Conduct.

“Peaceful expression of views is always acceptable,” the school had added in a statement, “but demonstrations cannot disrupt university operations. ASU is committed to maintaining a secure environment for everyone.”

ASU’s move to bring in the police and dismantle the encampment only one day after it was set up was an unusually quick move. On most campuses, similar encampments have been allowed to remain for many days, and in some cases, weeks, while administrations negotiate with the protestors instead of enforcing their own rules.

According to a Fox News report Saturday, the police have so far made over 2,200 arrests on 49 college campuses throughout the United States.

The protests, which universally demand that the schools divest from Israel due to its alleged crimes in going to war with Hamas after the terror organization massacred 1,200 people in a surprise invasion on October 7, 2023, have typically become hate-fests full of violent rhetoric and actions.

While consistently calling for the destruction of Israel, the demonstrators have also turned against fellow Jewish students, many of whom have been repeatedly assaulted physically or verbally as they try to get to class or their dorm rooms.

By JNS

The U.S. attorney’s office for the district of Arizona charged Jeffrey Mindock, 50, of Tempe, Ariz. with threatening to commit mass murder against Jews.

Mindock allegedly emailed a local rabbi asking him to sway a Utah judge to drop charges against him. “If you do not use your influence to right this wrong,” wrote Mindock, who evidently subscribed to the conspiracy theory that Jews have widespread power, “I will execute you and every other Jew I can find tonight at midnight of your Sabbath.”

The email subject line read: “Hitler was right, rabbi,” per the criminal complaint, which referred to the war between Israel and Hamas, ABC reported.

“As I have watched the atrocities unfolding in Palestine, I have come to the realization that you people are to blame for everything evil in this world,” he wrote allegedly. “Zionist Jews control everything from the courts to the banks to the media. We both know that you are in control.”

Mindock was arrested on Saturday morning.

“We have no tolerance for those who send threatening communications to Jewish faith leaders or to any other people in America,” stated U.S. Attorney Gary Restaino. “We will continue to exercise our prosecutorial discretion and deploy our resources to charge threats cases here in Arizona.”

“The FBI and our law enforcement partners must take people who make threats at their word and intervene, because protecting human life is our absolute priority,” added Chad Alvarado, acting special agent in charge of the FBI’s Phoenix field office.

By World Israel News Staff

The University of Arizona has come under fire for ignoring antisemitic threats and therefore failing to prevent the murder of a professor.

Mexner was shot and killed on October 5th while walking from his class to his office on the campus’s Harshbarger Building. The assassin, Murad Dervish, is his former student.

“Professor Thomas Meixner lost his life because antisemitism is not being taken seriously enough,” Michael Masters, the CEO of the Secure Community Network, wrote in an op-ed published Tuesday in the Arizona Republic.

According to Masters, Dervish’s antisemitic threats, which included wishing “death to all Jews,” should have been a warning sign for the campus police.

“Dervish should have never been allowed to have a gun, or allowed to enter a campus building. He should have been criminally charged with the threats he made,” Masters wrote, noting that he had been previously convicted of crimes and had spent time in prison.

But campus police did not pursue criminal charges, and neither did the Pima County Attorney’s Office.

“Too often reported violent antisemitic threats like these are dismissed as a byproduct of poor mental health and are not treated with necessary precautions,” Masters wrote. “More could and should have been done to prevent a senseless murder.”

Ironically, as Masters writes, Professor Meixner was Roman Catholic, not Jewish, but it didn’t matter because Dervish was convinced he was – and that was enough.

Dervish also sent threatening text messages to other non-Jewish faculty, including Professor Eyad Atallah, who he called “a filthy k— lover.”

“As Arabs we’re supposed to stick together,” Dervish wrote.”

“I hope somebody blows your (expletive) brains out.”

As a result of the texts, Atallah feared for his own life and purchased a bulletproof vest, installed an alarm system at his home and spent less time on campus, Masters wrote.

Last week, Masters’ group, which coordinates security for Jewish institutions across the U.S., alerted authorities in New York City to a post on social media by someone who vowing to “shoot up a synagogue.” The alert resulted in police apprehending the man, who had a gun, ammunition and a Nazi armband.

Dervish has pleaded not guilty.
