Military prosecutors in Israel on Sunday said they’d indicted a Palestinian man for leading a failed plot to blow up passengers on buses near Tel Aviv in February.

Abed Alkarim Snobar conspired with several other defendants, who are also standing trial in Israel for their alleged actions, to plant explosive devices on buses in Bat Yam near Tel Aviv, according to a statement released by the Israel Defense Forces’ Spokesperson’s Unit.

Snobar is the main defendant, according to the IDF prosecution.

Snobar “made several high-powered explosive charges featuring nails and screws to maximize the harm” to victims, according to the statement.

Snobar entered Israel on Feb. 20 and placed five charges in four buses in the Tel Aviv and Bat Yam area, timing them to go off at different times, according to the Spokesperson’s Unit.

However, some of the charges went off at night when the buses were parked and empty, resulting in no injuries.

This alerted security forces to the plot. The remaining charges were located and neutralized.

Snobar was caught in July after evading security forces in Judea and Samaria for months.

He was preparing a new terrorist attack in Tel Aviv at the time of his arrest, and had contacted others to carry it out, according to the statement.

At least one of the bombs bore a note, in Arabic and Hebrew, that stated “revenge from the Tulkarem refugee camp,” a reference to the terrorist hotbed in Judea and Samaria where Israeli security forces have been conducting counter-terror operations, Israel’s Channel 12 News reported at the time.

Members of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) terror group, based in Judea and Samaria and Lebanon, were the masterminds behind a recently failed bus bombing near Jerusalem, the Shin Bet security agency revealed on Monday.

In March 2023, a bomb began smoking on a public bus in the ultra-Orthodox city of Beitar Illit, sparking panic and a mass exodus of passengers from the vehicle. Fortunately, the bomb failed to detonate and police sappers were able to neutralize the device without any casualties.

After intense overnight door-to-door searches in the community, the terrorist who placed the bomb on the bus and his accomplices were arrested the next day in a nearby Arab town.

According to the Shin Bet statement released on Monday, senior PFLP commanders in Lebanon and the Gaza Strip planned the attack, provided material support and guidance to the terrorists, and gave orders to operatives regarding the timing of the attempted bombing.

Under the orders of foreign PFLP officials, a Bethlehem-based cell consisting of seven Palestinian men illegally traveled into Israel, physically assembled the explosive device, and rented safehouses to cover their tracks.

The Shin Bet, Israel Security Agency, named Mazen Abdullah, Ahmad Abu Naama, Wissam Ayuna, Nur Mahmoud, Rami Al-Ahmar, and Muhammad Al-Barak as members of the local cell.

An Israeli woman who helped the men cross into Israel was detained by the Shin Bet. After an investigation, authorities determined that she was unaware of the plot and charged her with the less-serious offense of aiding illegally entry into the country.

However, imprisoned PFLP head Ahmad Saadat was also involved in the planning of the attack, reports indicate. He has been incarcerated in an Israeli prison since 2008. Following the attempted bombing, authorities transferred him to a different correctional facility.

Israeli security forces arrested a Palestinian man on Friday night who is believed to have planted a homemade bomb on a bus traveling through the ultra-Orthodox city of Beitar Illit Thursday evening, the IDF said in a statement.

According to the IDF, the terrorist is a resident of Battir, a Palestinian Authority-controlled town about 7 kilometers (4.3 miles) northeast of Beitar Illit.

Four other Palestinians from Battir, who are suspected of aiding the man who planted the bomb, were detained by authorities.

The Shin Bet provided “accurate intelligence information” regarding the identities and whereabouts of the suspects, the IDF said.

A vehicle used by the suspects in the attempted bombing was also seized by Israeli security forces.

In security footage from the bus released by authorities, a man can be seen leaving the bus just before smoke begins filling the vehicle. The improvised explosive device (IED) apparently malfunctioned, and passengers were able to evacuate the bus before the bomb was detonated.

Police sappers successfully neutralized the bomb. No casualties were reported in the attempted terror attack.

The discovery of the bomb launched a widescale manhunt throughout Beitar Illit on Thursday evening, with sirens wailing throughout the city and residents ordered to stay inside and lock their doors and windows.

The attempted bombing attack occurred shortly after a terror shooting on Dizengoff Street in Tel Aviv on Thursday evening, which left two men critically wounded and the shooter dead.

In November 2022, an eastern Jerusalem man planted a bomb at a crowded bus stop in the capital city. The explosion killed two people – a teenage boy who was a dual citizen of Canada and Israel and a father of six.

The perpetrator had recently graduated with an engineering degree from an Israeli higher education institution. He was arrested several weeks after the bombing.

The Israeli Defense Forces Home Front Command urged residents of Beitar Illit to remain inside and lock their doors Thursday evening, as police and IDF soldiers hunted for a terrorist who planted a suspected device that failed to detonate on a bus.

After smoke billowed from a black bag on a bus nearby, officials neutralized the device, per reports. The man who placed the bag on the bus had already exited the vehicle, according to media reports.

Israeli security officials issued a Red Alert warning of an infiltration at 10:20 p.m. local time as they began a massive search for the terrorist. Beitar Illit is a haredi enclave of more than 9,000 families about 12 miles southwest of Jerusalem in the Gush Etzion bloc.

The ongoing security situation and intermittent warning sirens resulted in “numerous” emergency calls to the United Hatzalah dispatch center from those “suffering emotional shock and psychological stress reactions,” the organization stated.

The attempted attack came shortly after a terrorist shooting on Dizengoff Street in Tel Aviv, where three people were wounded by a Palestinian gunman who was shot and killed at the scene in an exchange of fire with Israeli forces.

On Friday morning, the regional IDF commander announced that the Red Alert warning had been cancelled for Beitar Illit, and that residents could again safely leave their homes.

Wednesday’s double terror bombing in Jerusalem sent shock waves throughout the State of Israel because it was a different style of attack than the one Israelis have, sadly, grown accustomed to seeing since March this year, when the latest escalation began.

Unlike the individual or small groups of terrorists who, acting on radical ideology and incitement to violence, picked up a gun, a knife, or embarked on a car-ramming attack, this time a better organized terrorist cell detonated two bombs—apparently by remote control—at bus stops in the capital.

Police and the Shin Bet have exhausted their immediate physical searches, and the hunt for the perpetrators will now move to the intelligence front.

Meanwhile, security personnel will be working around the clock to prevent the next bombing, scanning buses and bus stops in the city and trying to figure out how terrorists were able to make their way to western Jerusalem.

It is too soon to know who or which organization conducted the attack, but it is possible to note that in recent years, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) has taken a lead in remote-control bombing terrorism.

Last week, a car bomb that likely contained explosives detonated by remote control was discovered by the Israel Defense Forces in Samaria, after it caught fire prematurely. In August 2019, a PFLP cell detonated a remote control bomb in Dolev, 17 miles northwest of Jerusalem, killing a 17-year-old Israeli girl and seriously wounding her father and brother. Members of that terror cell were later arrested.

It is important to note that the level of threat to Israeli civilians from Palestinian terrorists is always high, whether there are specific warnings of plots, which can be acted upon by security forces who launch raids into terror hubs such as Jenin and Nablus, or whether there are more general alerts.

According to Maj. Gen. (res.) Alon Levavi, a senior research associate at the Miryam Institute and a former Israel Police deputy commissioner, major police reinforcements will be arriving in the Jerusalem district and at the seam line, and there will be a joint police, Shin Bet and IDF effort to gather as much intelligence about how Wednesday’s twin attacks occurred.

Since the start of this year, the Shin Bet (Israel’s security agency) has foiled no fewer than 34 terrorist bombings as well as 330 planned shootings, 54 stabbings, five car-ramming plots, two suicide bombings and three kidnappings.

Col. (res.). Michael Milshtein, a former adviser on Palestinian affairs to the Israeli Defence Ministry’s Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT) unit and a former head of the Department for Palestinians Affairs in the IDF’s Military Intelligence Directorate, said during a call organized by Media Central that despite the fact that the Second Intifada (2000-2005) saw many more attacks and casualties, “this time we and the Palestinians are much more concerned about the results of this wave of escalation—this is a result of the fact that this wave of escalation reflects deeper developments in the Palestinian arena and in the relations between Israel and the Palestinians.”

Milstein pointed to the “rise of the Z generation in the Palestinian arena, the young generation,” which he noted has been behind “most of the terrorism in the Samaria area, in Nablus and Jenin. Groups of younger Palestinians, most of them born around the year 2000. Most of them have no relations with the PA [Palestinian Authority] or even Fatah. Most feel deep alienation towards the PA,” he said.

With the Palestinian Authority losing its grip in parts of Samaria to armed terror gangs, and the image of the PA at an all-time low among Palestinians, in no small part due to corruption, nepotism and its violation of human rights, Milstein said, the current situation does not look promising.

Israel has a broad set of military measures it can call upon to confront terrorism, but one tool that it has also relied upon for the past 15 years to boost stability—economic easements for Palestinians living in Judea and Samaria, commonly known in the West Bank, seems to be losing its effectiveness.

All this amounts to a continued deterioration of the security situation. Although the resilience of the Israeli people and the great capabilities of the Israeli security forces will continue to provide a resolute response to terrorism, challenging times could lie ahead.

Israel’s Shin Bet internal security agency foiled bus bombing attempt last month by Gaza man with entry permit working on behalf of Islamic Jihad terror group.

Israeli security forces foiled a terrorist plot to bomb a bus in southern Israel last month, the Shin Bet internal security agency revealed Thursday morning.

The plot was hatched by terrorists from the Palestinian Islamic Jihad organization’s branch in the southern Gaza Strip city of Rafiah, who enlisted a 31-year-old Gazan named Fathi Ziad Zakot in September.

Zakot underwent extensive training over the course of weeks, and was instructed by his handlers to collect explosive materials and assemble them into a bomb after he entered Israel.

Islamic Jihad selected Zakot due to his possession of a valid work permit, allowing him to enter Israel.

Zakot was not a member of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, but had assisted the terror group in the past.

During Operation Protective Edge in the summer of 2014, Zakot helped Islamic Jihad terrorists to transfer weapons from a warehouse damaged by an Israeli airstrike to his brother’s home, and later returned the weapons.

Two years later, Zakot aided Islamic Jihad in moving concrete slabs to a terror tunnel.

Nevertheless, Zakot initially refused Islamic Jihad’s attempt to recruit him for the bus bombing plot.

He later relented, however, after a “persuasive conversation” with a member of the terror group, prosecutors wrote in Zakot’s indictment, which was filed Thursday, in conjunction with the Shin Bet announcement.

The indictment notes that the bombing plot was orchestrated by Jihad Na’am, a top Islamic Jihad official in southern Gaza.

Shin Bet agents arrested Zakot in October, after he entered the country and began assembling a bomb.

“The investigation illustrates once again that terrorists in the Gaza Strip are investing a lot of effort in establishing terror infrastructures to undermine regional stability, including taking advantage of work permits issued by the State of Israel for the purpose of promoting military activity,” a spokesperson for the Shin Bet said.

In the wake of Zakot’s arrest, the Defense Ministry’s Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT) suspended entry permits for roughly 200 Gazans related to known terrorists.

Thursday’s announcement comes a day after twin bombing attacks at Jerusalem bus stops left one person dead and 18 more injured.

Israeli officials vowed to catch the terrorists responsible for a pair of bombings in Jerusalem that killed one person and injured more than 20 others.

“They can run, they can hide — it won’t help them,” outgoing Prime Minister Yair Lapid said in a statement. “We will punish them to the fullest extent of the law.”

A pair of bombs blew up within minutes of each other at bus stops near the entrance to Jerusalem. One detonated near the Central Bus Station, the other at a bus stop by the Ramot Junction known by locals as the “Trempiada.” Police are investigating this as a coordinated terror attack.

IDF Chief of Staff Lt.-Gen. Aviv Kochavi cut short a visit to the U.S. after being briefed on the situation.

Hundreds of people came to pay their last respects to Aryeh Schupak, a 16-year-old Canadian yeshiva student who was killed while waiting for a ride.

Meanwhile, 24 victims were treated for injuries at Hadassah’s hospitals in Ein Kerem and Mt. Scopus while six were taken to the Shaarei Zedek Medical Center. One victim — an Ethiopian immigrant in his 40s — is fighting for his life.

“He is suffering from a very serious head injury, and his life is in immediate danger,” said the director of Shaarei Zedek’s trauma unit, Dr. Alon Shortz.

The familyhas asked the public to pray for Tedsa ben Mada.

Police continued scouring the area around the Jerusalem’s western entrance for additional bombs and searching for the terrorists. Security was beefed up in public areas and the public was urged to remain vigilant.

“We call on the public in Jerusalem and in general, to maintain a full life routine,” a police statement said. “In addition, one must be alert for suspicious objects, suspicious people or any unusual occurrence that requires police treatment and intervention and report it as soon as possible to the police’s 100 hotline.”

The statement also stressed that public gatherings were still secure. The bombing occurred on the day Israel’s Ethiopian community marked the holiday of Sigd. A public event held later in the afternoon went on as scheduled.

American and European Union officials issued statements condemning the terror attack. Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad praised the bombing without claiming responsibility.

A veteran journalist for Israel’s army radio was suspended from reporting on Wednesday morning’s double terror bombings in Jerusalem after she suggested that the likely appointment of a right-wing lawmaker as Public Security Minister was somehow to blame for the attacks.

Hadas Shtaif, a correspondent for Galei Tzahal, claimed on the air Wednesday morning that Otzma Yehudit faction chief MK Itamar Ben-Gvir’s demand in coalition talks with the Likud that he be appointed Public Security Ministry was “impossible to separate” from the terrorist bombings in the capital.

“It is impossible to separate the event from the coalition negotiations and the desire to appoint a certain person to the position of managing a certain ministry.”

Shortly afterwards, Ben-Gvir visited the scene of one of the bombing attacks, prompting Shtaif to harangue the lawmaker via Twitter.

“We started this morning with two terror attacks in Jerusalem. It seems that bombing attacks are making a comeback, along with knives, stones, and shootings. An escalation. And the forecast? A cascade of terror attacks.”

“And the Public Security Minister-designate… this is your declaration this morning?” Shtaif continued, referencing Ben-Gvir’s vow to continue visiting the Temple Mount even after he is appointed minister.

“It is the police officers and Border Police soldiers who will be harmed.”

Following her comments, Shtaif was suspended from reporting further on the bombing attacks on Jerusalem, but she emphasized on Twitter that she has not been suspended as a reporter on Galei Tzahal.

“I have been suspended from broadcasting the attack until further notice… All my haters will have a party. Don’t forget to invite me too,” Shtaif tweeted.

A spokesperson for Galei Tzahal said Shtaif’s coverage is now under investigation.

“Hadas Shtaif’s report which was broadcast this morning is under investigation by Galai Tzahal. The reporter has been asked not to report on the attack until the end of the investigation.”

Ben-Gvir excoriated Shtaif, urging army radio to permanently suspend her broadcasts.

“Hadas Shtaif used her platform at Galai Tzahal to back terrorism, to incite against me and even to make a false report.”

“I hope that her suspension will not be temporary. I am the first to fight for the freedom of expression of journalists, but those who encourage terrorists to carry out attacks and look for justifications for them should not be allowed to broadcast on Galai Tzahal.”

Canadian national Aryeh Schupak, a 16-year-old yeshiva student who was studying at the Beit Meir Yeshiva, was killed when a bomb exploded at a bus stop in western Jerusalem.

Shortly afterwards, a second bomb exploded at a bus stop in the Ramot neighborhood of Jerusalem.

Nineteen people were injured in the twin bombings Wednesday morning, including one listed in critical condition and two victims in serious condition.

The teen victim of a Jerusalem terror attack Wednesday morning was identified as Aryeh Schupak, a Canadian citizen who lived in the city’s Har Nof neighborhood and was studying at a yeshiva in Beit Meir, just west of the capital.

At least 19 others were injured, several critically, when two bombs detonated, one after the other, during the morning rush hour – the first at a bus stop at the entrance to the city, where Shechopek was waiting for a ride, and the second on an empty bus at the Ramot junction in the northern end of Jerusalem.

The wounded victims were sent to Jerusalem’s Shaare Zedek and Hadassah Ein-Kerem hospitals.

The explosive devices had been placed in bags left at the locations. They reportedly were packed with nails, reminiscent of bombs detonated during the Second Intifada.

Police, who said the explosives were of a “high quality,” and security officials are searching the city for more potential explosions as well as for the terrorists. They believe the attacks were carried out by an organized terror cell.

“The main effort of the Israel Police is currently scanning all areas – bus stops, transportation and crowd gatherings, in parallel with the effort of the pursuit in order to get hold of the perpetrator of the attack,” said Police Commissioner Kobi Shabtai. “We will do everything in our power together with all the other security forces to get to this cell.”

The funeral began Sunday afternoon at 2:45 and was attended by hundreds. Schupak was buried at the Har Hamenuchot cemetery at the western entrance to Jerusalem.

Bulgarian court gives life sentences in absentia to two Hezbollah terrorists for their role in a 2012 bus bombing that killed five Israelis.

A judge in Bulgaria sentenced two suspected Hezbollah members to life in prison Monday for the 2012 bus bombing at the Burgas airport that killed five Israeli tourists and their Bulgarian bus driver.

The two men, Meliad Farah, 39, a dual citizen of Lebanon and Australia, and Hassan El Hajj Hassan, 32, who had dual Canadian-Lebanese citizenship, were found guilty by judge Judge Adelina Ivanova for their roles in blowing up the bus at the airport in the Bulgarian Black Sea resort city of Burgas on July 18, 2012.

Evidence found at the scene linked the two men to the crime, but the two have never been apprehended and the attackers were tried in absentia.

The two were convicted of helping the bomber, a dual French-Lebanese citizen named Mohamad Hassan El Husseini who was killed when the bomb exploded, setting the bus on fire.

Security cameras at the airport showed El Husseini loitering beside the bus with a backpack before putting it inside the luggage compartment when it exploded.

Bulgarian officials had said the terror cell had arrived a month before the attack. They called the cell members sophisticated and well-trained.

Farah and Hassan left Bulgaria the day after the attack.

The Israeli tourists killed were all in their twenties except for Kochava Shriki of Rishon LeZion who was 42 and pregnant. Another 38 Israelis were injured in the bombing.

A 2012 New York Times report quoted American security officials who identified the suicide bomber as a member of a cell from the Iran-backed Hezbollah terror group, which was operating in Bulgaria and looking to attack Israeli targets.

Forensic investigators found that all of the fake drivers licenses used by the terrorists were printed on the same printer at a Lebanese university and that the suspects received money from people linked to Hezbollah.

The two convicted terrorists are still at large and are on Interpol’s most-wanted list.

A terrorist who was imprisoned in Israel for bombing a bus has been sentenced in the U.S. for lying to immigration authorities when he became a citizen.

Fifty-one-year-old Vallmoe Shqaire who was living in Downey, California was sentenced to nine months in federal prison Friday for unlawfully procuring U.S. citizenship in 2008. He also was stripped of his citizenship and will be deported to Jordan.

Shqaire spent four years in prison for helping in the 1988 attempted roadside bombing of a bus.

The pipe bomb exploded but nobody was hurt. Shqaire carried out the terror attack as an operative of the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO), which was classified as a terrorist organization by the U.S.

Shqaire pleaded guilty in January to concealing the bombing conviction and his PLO ties on his citizenship application.

Shqaire’s case emerges after the high-profile deportation of Rasmea Yousef Odeh, who lost her U.S. citizenship and was sent to Jordan for lying to American immigration officials about her life sentence in Israel for her involvement in two 1969 terror bombings.

One of the bombings occurred in a crowded supermarket in Jerusalem, killing 21-year-old Leon Kanner and 22-year-old Eddie Joffe, and wounding nine others.

Israeli security authorities have arrested “a number” of Hamas members on suspicion of involvement in Monday’s bombing of a bus in Jerusalem, in which 20 people were wounded, confirming that the Palestinian terror group was likely behind the attack as opposed to a lone-wolf terrorist.

“Through intensive intelligence and field activity, the Shin Bet (Israel’s Security Agency), the Israeli Police and the IDF arrested a number of suspects about a day after the attack on the Jerusalem bus—Hamas suspects from the Bethlehem area—who are suspected of being involved in planning the attack and executing it. Interrogation of the suspects is in progress and their identities are classified,” the Jerusalem Police said in a statement.

“It has been cleared for publication that the critically wounded man from the attack, who died at the Shaare Zedek hospital, is the terrorist who perpetrated the attack on the Egged line 12 bus. The terrorist, Abd al-Hamid Abu Srur, [who was] about 19 years old, [a] resident of Beit Jala, and affiliated with the Hamas movement, was, as stated, critically wounded during the perpetration of the attack and died of his wounds [on Wednesday] at the hospital. The attack wounded 20 civilians, one of them severely, seven moderately, and the others lightly,” the statement added.

Israeli security forces remain on high alert as Israel enters its spring holiday season, which includes Passover and its Independence Day.

Israel’s Yedioth Ahronoth reported that the Police raised the country’s security alert level to 3 and deployed thousands of police officers throughout the country in recreational spots and crowded areas. In Jerusalem, a prime location during the holiday, 3,500 police officers are patrolling the streets.

“These forces are patrolling in all public places, bus stations, shopping malls, tram stations,” said Israel Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld.

“The Jerusalem Police works to provide balance, in order to enable all three [monotheistic] faiths to exercise their freedom of worship with the guarantee of personal safety and security, and expects that public behavior during this period will be characterized by tolerance and mutual respect,” the police said in a statement, Israel National News reported.

The Hamas terror organization on Wednesday revealed the identity of the suicide terrorist who carried out Monday’s bus bombing in Jerusalem that wounded 20, after he died of his wounds in an Israeli hospital.

Hamas named him as Abd al-Hamid Abu Srur, a 19-year-old resident of the Aida refugee camp near Bethlehem and a member of Hamas.

The bomber’s father was arrested by the IDF on Wednesday.

The terrorist was not immediately recognized as the terrorist responsible for the attack and was not identified, although he was suspected by Israeli security forces as being the bomber because of the nature of his wounds and his proximity to the explosive device.

A 13-year-old girl and a 34-year-old woman still remain hospitalized at Shaare Zedek Medical Center in light-to-moderate condition.

Police and the Shabak (Israel’s Security Agency) continue to investigate who was behind the attack, the first of its kind in a decade and a half. A gag order has been placed on the details of the investigation.

The military wing of Palestinian Authority (PA) Mahmoud Abbas’ Fatah faction also praised the bombing and called for more such attacks.

Israel’s Ynet reported that some 100 members of the terrorist’s family celebrated his actions, handed out sweets and sang songs of praise for his “martyrdom.”
