Antisemitism watchdog group accuses Spanish premier of incitement to genocide after he lamented that his country lacked nuclear weapons and is thus unable to “pursue the perpetrators” of the war in Gaza.

Spain’s prime minister lamented this week his country’s lack of a nuclear arsenal and a large aircraft carrier fleet, suggesting that were Spain able to, it would use military force to intervene against Israel in the war in Gaza.

On Thursday, Spanish media outlets published comments made by Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez during a press conference on Monday, when he announced a sweeping arms embargo on Israel along with restrictions on trade.

In the comments published on Thursday, Sanchez suggested he would use military force to prevent Israel from continuing its war in the Gaza Strip, blaming Spain’s limited military capacity and lack of nuclear weapons for the limited measures taken against Israel.

In comments not initially published widely, Sanchez accused Israel of committing “genocide” in the Gaza Strip and said Spain’s ability to intervene on behalf of the Palestinians against Israel was constrained by its operational limitations.

Spain, said Sanchez, is doing what it can to “stop the genocide in Gaza, pursue its perpetrators, and support the Palestinian population.”

However, he added that “Spain, as you know, doesn’t have nuclear bombs, nor aircraft carriers, nor large oil reserves.”

“We alone can’t stop the Israeli offensive. But that doesn’t mean we won’t stop trying, because there are causes that are worth fighting for, even if winning them isn’t in our sole power,” he said.

The comments drew sharp criticism both in Spain and abroad, with critics calling it a thinly veiled threat to attack Israel.

Santiago Abascal, chief of the right-wing Vox party, said that Sanchez “would like to have nuclear weapons…but not to defend Spain. To defend Hamas.”

A spokesman for the Popular Party wondered openly whether Sanchez plans to drop “a nuclear bomb on Tel Aviv. Is that what he intends to do?”

On Thursday, the Combat Antisemitism Movement (CAM) blasted Sanchez over the comments and called for an investigation to probe whether the remarks constituted incitement to genocide against Israelis.

“These disgusting and inflammatory comments have violently ripped off the mask of Prime Minister Sanchez, who claims to be acting on behalf of humanitarian intentions when his secret desire appears to be militarily attacking Israel, even with the use of weapons of mass destruction,” CAM CEO Sacha Roytman Dratwa said.

“PM Sanchez now joins an unenviable club of those who have wistfully aspired to use nuclear weapons against Israel, which includes Palestinian Authority senior official Jibril Rajoub, who said that ‘if we had nuclear weapons, we’d be using them,’ and a former Iranian president who said, ‘Israel is a one-bomb country.’”

“These comments are nothing short of an aspiration to genocide and will be used as a dog whistle to extremists around the region who dream of the absolute destruction of Israel, using any means possible,” Dratwa said. “Prime Minister Sánchez needs to immediately take back these murderous words, apologize unreservedly and pray that his words will not inspire further bloodshed, or international legal courts and authorities should explore charging him with incitement to genocide.”

The Combat Antisemitism Movement (CAM) launched this week a new mobile app that allows users worldwide to quickly and securely report antisemitic incidents in real time.

Report It is available for download in the Apple Store and Google Play. Users can easily share details of antisemitic incidents through the app – such as date, location, and even photos or videos – and verified reports are then forwarded to local leaders, law enforcement, media outlets, and community organizations who can intervene and respond when necessary.

Users of Report It also have the option to remain anonymous when reporting an incident and their personal details are never shared.

“Research and reports have consistently demonstrated that the overwhelming majority of antisemitic incidents are unreported, frequently because of a mistrust of authorities, a lack of awareness of reporting systems, bureaucratic hurdles, and excessive ‘red tape,’” CAM CEO Sacha Roytman said in a released statement.

“With Report It, we are giving every individual a quick, safe, and effective way to shine a light on hate, hold perpetrators accountable, and drive meaningful change. Together, we can fight back against antisemitism and build safer, stronger communities.”

A survey commissioned by CAM last year revealed that 3.5 million Jewish Americans personally experienced antisemitism following the Hamas-led terrorist attack in Israel on Oct. 7, 2023.

CAM’s Antisemitism Research Center (ARC) has monitored more than 12,000 antisemitic incidents across the world in the last half decade, including acts of graffiti, vandalism, harassment, discrimination, incitement, threats, and violence.

Each submission on the Report It app “contributes to a clearer picture of the scale of antisemitism and strengthens advocacy for stronger protections and policies,” CAM said in a press release.

“CAM calls on individuals everywhere to join the fight against antisemitism: See it. Report it. Stop it.”

In the United States, mayors of major cities gathered for a summit against antisemitism, with a focus on honoring Israeli mayors and community leaders.

Representing Israeli municipal leaders was Yisrael Ganz, Governor of the Binyamin Regional Council and Chairman of the Yesha Council.

The event, initiated by the Combat Antisemitism Movement (CAM), took place in Beverly Hills, California, and brought together around 170 prominent mayors from across the United States and Canada.

According to the organizers, “Antisemitism is an urgent and growing threat, endangering not only Jewish communities but also the core values of our diverse democratic society. Mayors have a unique ability to proactively address antisemitism at the local level, where it is most acutely felt.”

During the conference, a new tool was introduced—the Municipal Action Index Against Antisemitism—which ranks and evaluates local authorities based on their commitment and effectiveness in combating antisemitism.

At the event’s peak, the mayors paid tribute to Israeli community leaders for their steadfast resilience over the past year. Representing the Israeli leaders, Yisrael Ganz, Governor of the Binyamin Regional Council and Chairman of the Yesha Council, expressed his gratitude:

“On behalf of all Israeli municipal leaders, their residents, and the residents of Judea and Samaria, I thank you for your warm support during these challenging times. In meetings with several of you over the past year, and again today, there is an understanding that was not always reflected in the policies of the outgoing administration: those who allow extremists and antisemites to thrive in their backyard may wake up to their own version of October 7—whether in the U.S. or Europe,” Ganz said.

“In Israel, we learned this lesson the hard way. We allowed Palestinian Arabs and Hamas to grow stronger in the heart of the Land of Israel, and now we’ve woken up to the consequences. Despite our warnings that withdrawals from the Land of Israel and concessions to terror would only amplify it, we were not heeded, and this is the result.”

He continued, “The antisemitic rhetoric and incidents we have witnessed—and still see—against Jews in the U.S. indicate a simmering backyard that, regrettably, gains legitimacy in certain circles, even on campuses.”

Ganz called on his fellow municipal leaders:

“I urge you, as the representative of Israeli municipalities, to issue a joint call to outlaw the BDS movement in your cities and states. You are leaders of the United States, and you have the opportunity to guide this great nation toward a more moral and secure future—not only for Jews but for yourselves, as citizens of the free world who cherish liberty.”

In his speech, Ganz explained, “The BDS movement is antisemitic, operating under the guise of political criticism. In a free world, it has no place. What began as a boycott of Judea and Samaria’s products has escalated into a boycott and incitement campaign against the entire State of Israel, Israelis, and Jews everywhere.”

The Mayor of Beverly Hills, who hosted the summit, announced that the October 7 Memorial, established in the city to honor those murdered and kidnapped, will become a permanent fixture.
