A pro-Hamas group at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire which calls itself the “New Deal Coalition” (NDC) commandeered the anteroom of the Parkhurst Hall administrative building on Wednesday but limited the demonstration to business hours, as its members went home when it was shuttered at 6pm.

Before leaving the building, however, the group contributed to injuries sustained by a member of President Sian Beilock’s staff and an officer of the school’s Department of Safety and Security officer, according to The Dartmouth, the college’s official campus newspaper.

College deans Anne Hudak and Eric Ramsey have since vowed to hold the group, which included non-students, accountable.

“While Dartmouth remains committed to dialogue, we want to be absolutely clear: there cannot and will not be any tolerance for the type of escalation we saw on our campus today,” the officials said in a statement quoted by The Dartmouth.

During the unauthorized demonstration, the agitators shouted “free, free Palestine,” words shouted only recently by another anti-Israel activist who allegedly murdered two Israeli diplomats outside the Capital Jewish Museum in Washington, DC.

The following day, the group at Dartmouth defended the behavior, arguing that it is a legitimate response to the college’s rejection of a proposal — inspired by the boycott, divestment, and sanctions (BDS) movement — to divest from armaments and aerospace manufacturers which sell to Israel and its recent announcement of a new think tank, the Davidson Institute for Global Security, which it claims is linked to the Jewish state.

“We took this escalated action — one deployed several times in Dartmouth’s history to protest against apartheid — because Dartmouth funded, US-backed Israel has been escalating its genocidal assault on Palestine,” the group wrote.

“In an effort to ‘dialogue,’ a group of students, staff, and faculty, and alumni spent months drafting extensively researched 55-page divestment proposal … How did the college respond? They rejected divestment on every single criteria and, the day after, announced that they are reinvesting in colonial genocide with the launch of the Davidson Institute for Global Security.”

The statement concluded with an ambiguous threat and an evocation of the memory of the Holocaust.

“So long as you fund actively imperialistic violence, we will continue to hold you accountable,” it said. “There is only one solution! Intifada! Revolution!”

Last week, Dartmouth College’s Advisory Committee on Investor Responsibility (ACIR) unanimously rejected a proposal urging the school to adopt the BDS movement against Israel.

“By a vote of nine to zero, the [ACIR] at Dartmouth College finds that the divestment proposal submitted by Dartmouth Divest for Palestine and dated Feb. 18, 2025, does not meet criteria, laid out in the Dartmouth Board of Trustees’ Statement on Investment and Social Responsibility and in ACIR’s charge, that must be satisfied for the proposal to undergo further review,” the committee said in a report explaining its decision. “ACIR recommends not to advance the proposal.”

A copy of the document reviewed by The Algemeiner shows that the committee evaluated the BDS proposal, submitted by the Dartmouth Divest for Palestine (DDP) group, based on five criteria regarding the college’s divestment history, capacity to address controversial issues through discourse and learning, and campus unity.

It concluded that DDP “partially” met one of them by demonstrating that Dartmouth has divested from a country or industry in the past to establish its moral credibility on pressing cultural and geopolitical issues but noted that its analysis of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict lacks nuance, betraying the group’s “lack of engagement with counter arguments.”

ACIR added that DDP also does not account for the sheer divisiveness of BDS — which seeks to isolate Israel from the international community as a step toward its eventual elimination — and its potential to “degrade” rather than facilitate “additional dialogue on campus.”

It continued, “The proposal includes no compelling evidence on the level of support for divestment among students, among faculty, among staff, and among alumni. Moreover, the proposal is silent on the matter of how divestment can be treated as a consensus position in the face of what is almost certainly deep opposition to it among some members of the Dartmouth community.”

NDC is one of many campus groups which staged an end of year action aimed at coercing college officials into adopting anti-Israel policies.

At Yale University, a pro-Hamas group moved to cap off the year with a hunger strike, choosing to starve themselves inside an administrative building in lieu of establishing an illegal encampment.

Yale administrators refused to meet with the students for a discussion of their demands that the university’s endowment be divested of any ties to Israel, as well as companies that do business with it, according to the Yale Daily News.

On the fourth day of the demonstration, Yale student affairs dean Melanie Boyd briefly approached the students at the site of their demonstration, Sheffield-Sterling-Strathcona Hall, advising them to leave the space because “the administration does not intend to hold any additional meetings.”

The group ended the hunger strike after just ten days, citing “deteriorating health conditions.”

In New York City, pro-Hamas students clashed with police during an unauthorized demonstration at City University of New York, Brooklyn College, continuing a series of days in which law enforcement has been deployed to quell extremist disturbances.

As seen in footage captured by “FreedomNews.TV,” students rocked officers with blow after blow to obstruct their being arrested for trespassing, prompting as many as six others to rush in to help with detaining one person at a time. The melees were unlike any seen on a US college campus this semester.

Reportedly, the aim of the group was to establish a pro-Hamas encampment on the East Quad section of campus, which they called a “Liberated Zone,” and several reports said that it attempted to block the entrance to the Tanger Hillel House after being prevented from doing so.

FreedomNews captured several more fights between protesters and officers which were filmed in front of the Hillel building, where Jewish students socialize and seek support from their community.

“Tanger Hillel at Brooklyn College is appalled by the anti-Israel protest and encampment that took place on May 8, 2025 and violated campus policies and feared deeply troubling antisemitic rhetoric, including chants of ‘Say it loud, say it clear, we don’t want no Zionists here,’ and banners with inverted red triangles, a symbol widely recognized as a call for violence,” Tanger Hillel told The Algemeiner in a statement following the incident.

“Targeting Hillel, the Jewish student center, is not a peaceful protest. It is harassment, intimidation, and an antisemitic act of aggression.”

Dartmouth College is not the first higher education institution to foreclose divestment from Israel.

Writing to The Dartmouth, DDP reiterated an argument that — in addition to echoing the propaganda of neo-Nazi groups and jihadist terrorist organizations — has been deemed as fallacious by Dartmouth and other colleges and universities across the US.

“Our coalition of students, alumni, faculty, and staff remain committed to the basic principle behind our proposal: institutions of higher learning should not be invested in weapons companies and other corporations complicit in genocide, scholasticide, and violations of international law,” the group’s statement said.

“Such investments are not in keeping with Dartmouth’s academic mission and its responsibility to its community and the broader world.”

Dartmouth College is not the first higher education institution to foreclose divestment from Israel.

Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine did so in March when its Board of Trustees voted to accept the counsel of a committee that recommended maintaining investment practices which safeguard the institution’s financial health and educational mission.

“The endowment exists solely to provide financial support of the college across generations,” said a report submitted to trustees in February and, according to The Bowdoin Orient, subsequently ratified by them. “It should not be used as a tool for the advocacy of public policy.”

The reported, authored by the college’s Ad Hoc Committee on Investments and Responsibility, continued, “Interventions in the management of the endowment that are rooted in moral or political considerations should be exceedingly rare and restricted to those cases where there is near-universal consensus among Bowdoin’s community of stakeholders … if such actions are pursued, they should be taken only where the financial trade-offs are identifiable, measurable, and limited.”

Boston University rejected BDS in February, with its president, Melissa Gilliam, saying, “the endowment is no longer the vehicle for political debate; nevertheless, I will continue to seek ways that members of our community can engage with each other on political issues of our day including the conflict in the Middle East.”

Trinity College turned away BDS advocates in November, citing its “fiduciary responsibilities” and “primary objective of maintaining the endowment’s intergeneration equity.”

It also noted that acceding to demands for divestment for the sake of “utilizing the endowment to exert political influence” would injure the college financially, stressing that doing so would “compromise our access to fund managers, in turn undermining the board’s ability to perform its fiduciary obligation.”

The University of Minnesota in August pointed to the same reason for spurning divestment while stressing the extent to which the Israeli-Palestinian conflict polarizes its campus community.

It coupled its pronouncement with a new investment policy, a so-called “position of neutrality” which, it says, will be a guardrail protecting university business from the caprices of political opinion.

Colleges and universities will squander tens of billions of dollars in endowment returns if they capitulate to demands to divest from Israel, according to a report published in September 2024 by JLens, a Jewish investor network that is part of the Anti-Defamation League (ADL).

Titled “The Impact of Israel Divestment on Equity Portfolios: Forecasting BDS’s Financial Toll on University Endowments,” the report presented the potential financial impact of universities adopting the BDS movement, which is widely condemned for being antisemitic.

The losses JLens projected are catastrophic. Adopting BDS, it said, would incinerate $33.21 billion of future returns for the 100 largest university endowments over the next 10 years, with Harvard University losing $2.5 billion and the University of Texas losing $2.2 billion.

Other schools would forfeit over $1 billion in growth, including the University of Pennsylvania, Stanford University, and Princeton University. For others, such as the University of Michigan and Dartmouth College, the damages would total in the hundreds of millions.

The perpetrator said they intentionally chose to act on the day that prospective students were visiting.

As prospective members of Dartmouth’s class of 2029 visited their new campus for the first time Monday morning, they were confronted by a smattering of red paint across Dartmouth Hall’s facade.

The person who was allegedly responsible for the paint, which dripped from the building’s windows and doorways, said the act was in protest of the school’s investment in companies affiliated with Israel. The person spoke anonymously with the school’s student paper, The Dartmouth, about their motivations.

“Despite the known atrocities unfolding, Dartmouth insists on fueling the war machine through its cooperation with arms manufacturers complicit with the Gaza genocide,” the individual told The Dartmouth.

In February, the student coalition Dartmouth Divest for Palestine submitted a formal proposal to the school for it to divest from Israel. A college spokesperson said last month that investment decisions “must not curtail debate” but that an advisory committee would evaluate the request.

Divestment has long been a rallying cry from pro-Palestinian activists on campuses who seek to have their school’s finances severed from Israel. Dousing facades with red paint is likewise a frequent tactic of pro-Palestinian activists.

Last year, the steps of Dartmouth’s president’s office was also splattered with red paint and the words “Free Palestine Divest” were written on the side of the building, according to Valley News.

The individual told the paper that they intentionally chose to act on the day that prospective students were visiting.

“As Dartmouth welcomes the Class of 2029 to campus, university students in Gaza must put their education on pause for the second consecutive year due to Israel’s continued assault on the Gaza Strip,” the source told The Dartmouth. “Let the blood that drips from Dartmouth Hall remind you of the price of silence.”

Dartmouth condemned the vandalism in a statement.

“Dartmouth prizes and defends the freedom of expression and dissent. Vandalism, however, is unacceptable and not protected by Dartmouth policies,” the statement read. “The Hanover Police Department and Dartmouth’s Department of Safety and Security are investigating the incident.”

Hillel at Dartmouth also denounced the vandalism in a statement, adding that it was “confident” the university will offer a “firm and principled” response.

“Acts of vandalism do not move us forward—there is no place for intimidation, violence, or destruction of property on our campus,” the statement read. “These acts of vandalism only serve to foster division among our students. Instead, we should all strive to build bridges by listening and finding common ground.”

By Monday afternoon, maintenance crews had largely cleared the paint off Dartmouth Hall, according to The Dartmouth.

The vandalism comes as schools around the country face mounting scrutiny from the Trump administration over their handling of pro-Palestinian protests on their campus.

The administration has made billions of dollars in federal funding cuts to several Ivy League schools including Harvard and Cornell.

But Dartmouth, which received praise in the aftermath of Oct. 7, 2023, for how it handled tensions around Israel, has so far emerged mostly unscathed.

It was not included in the Trump administration’s March list of 60 schools under investigation over allegations of antisemitism, even though it, like many other campuses, saw large-scale protests last spring.

There have been moments of tension. In May 2024, a Jewish professor at Dartmouth was thrown to the ground by police at an anti-Israel encampment. This year, two students at Dartmouth have had their student visas revoked, though one was subsequently reinstated.

Recently, Dartmouth students, alumni and faculty criticized the school for not condemning the administration’s campus crackdown. Last week, Dartmouth was the only Ivy League school that didn’t join a petition signed by 400 university leaders decrying the administration’s actions.

In response to the criticism, Dartmouth’s President Sian Leah Beilock emailed a statement to the school community defending her lack of opposition, writing, “reflection does not mean capitulation.” She added, “I believe we can do better by staying focused on what we are: educational institutions, not political organizations.”
