Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Sunday he and his wife Sara Netanyahu “grieve with the American people over the loss of our dear friend, Senator Lindsey Graham.”

“In our recent meeting, I said, ‘Lindsey is a great friend of Israel and a cherished friend of mine. We have no better friend than Lindsey.’ Lindsey understood that the security of Israel and America are inseparable. He devoted his life to defending America, strengthening our alliance and standing up for the free world,” continued the statement.

“Israel has lost one of its greatest friends. America has lost a great patriot. I have lost a beloved friend,” said the premier.

“Our hearts are with Lindsey’s family and with the American people at this difficult time. May his values and initiatives continue to guide us toward victory and peace, and may his memory forever be a blessing,” the statement concluded.

Graham (R-S.C.) died on Saturday following a “brief and sudden illness,” his office announced early on Sunday.

“On the evening of Saturday, July 11, U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham passed away from a brief and sudden illness. Senator Graham’s family appreciates prayers at this time and asks for privacy during this incredibly difficult period,” according to the statement.

Graham, 71, was serving his fourth term. He had held the seat since Jan. 3, 2003, and his current term was set to expire in January 2027.

Last month, Graham won the Republican primary after receiving U.S. President Donald Trump’s endorsement, positioning him for a fifth Senate term in November.

Israeli producer Dana Eden, best known for co-creating the Emmy-winning espionage thriller “Tehran,” has died suddenly in Greece, Israeli public broadcaster KAN said Monday.

Eden, 52, was found dead in a hotel in the Greek capital, Athens, a Greek police official said, adding that initial indications suggested she had taken her own life and there was no suspicion of foul play.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity, as Greek police do not comment publicly in such cases.

KAN said Eden was in Greece for the filming of the hit series’ fourth season.

“Dana was among the leading figures in Israel’s television industry and played a central role in the creation and leadership of some of the most prominent and influential productions within the corporation,” KAN said in a statement. It did not give a cause of death.

“Her professional work, uncompromising dedication, and love for creation left a deep mark on the Israeli Public Broadcasting Corporation. KAN shares in the deep sorrow of her family, friends, and colleagues,” the broadcaster said.

In a statement posted on its Facebook page, Eden’s production company, Donna and Shula Productions, sought to dispel rumors that the producer had been killed.

“The production company wishes to clarify that the rumors of a criminal or nationally motivated death are false and unfounded,” it said.

“This is a moment of great pain for the family, friends, and colleagues. We ask that Dana’s dignity and the privacy of her loved ones be respected,” the production company said.

Israel’s Culture and Sports Minister Miki Zohar, in a social media post on X, said it was “with great sadness” that he had received the news of Eden’s death, describing her as “one of the most prominent and influential producers in the Israeli television industry.”

“Dana left a deep mark on Israeli creation and brought our story to international stages with pride, talent, and courage,” Zohar said.

“Tehran,” which premiered in Israel and on Apple TV in 2020, tells the story of Tamar Rabinyan, a young Mossad operative tasked with hacking into and disabling the Iranian nuclear reactor so the Israeli military can carry out an airstrike.

The show was named best drama series at the 49th International Emmy Awards in November 2021.

Eden started working in TV production in Israel in the 1990s, working on shows including the comedy “Yom Haem” and the crime drama “Magpie,” before finding international success with “Tehran.”

In 2018, her show “Saving the Wildlife” won Best TV Magazine for Children and Youth at the Awards of the Israeli Television Academy.

Israel’s High Court of Justice ruled that autopsies will not be conducted on the two infants who died in the Jerusalem daycare disaster, determining that post-mortem examinations would violate the dignity of the deceased.

The decision came despite police warnings that autopsies were critical to establishing the exact cause of death.

The ruling follows intense pressure from ultra-Orthodox communities, where religious law strongly opposes autopsies.

Large demonstrations erupted in Jerusalem and other cities after initial approval was granted, with protests at times turning violent and requiring police intervention.

Investigators say the daycare—an unlicensed facility operating out of a residential apartment—saw multiple infants collapse within a short time.

Two babies later died, and dozens of others were hospitalized and treated. Police have arrested the daycare owner and a caregiver on suspicion of negligence causing death.

Israel is moving fast to blunt an unusually aggressive flu season, rushing in roughly 485,000 additional vaccine doses that landed at Ben Gurion Airport and are slated for rapid distribution to the country’s health funds.

The Health Ministry is urging Israelis to get vaccinated as soon as possible, stressing that while the shot won’t block every infection, it “significantly reduces the risk of serious illness and complications” and is available free of charge through health insurance providers.

Hospitals are already feeling the pressure. Recent Health Ministry data cited by Israeli and international outlets points to a sharp rise in influenza A cases, with hundreds hospitalized and dozens in intensive care, including children.

The most alarming signal is the toll on kids: reporting windows differ, but multiple outlets citing the Health Ministry say four to five children have died from influenza in recent weeks, with most of the fatalities among unvaccinated children.

Why is this season hitting harder?

Health officials are linking the early surge to a new sub-variant of influenza A(H3N2), sometimes referenced as the “K” subvariant, which appears to be spreading earlier than expected and driving higher-than-average morbidity.

Vaccination is climbing, but coverage remains far from where health leaders want it.

The Health Ministry has said more than 1.5 million people have been vaccinated so far, about 15.7% of the population, with roughly half of Israelis aged 65+ vaccinated.

Behind the scenes, Israel is also trying to shield its most vulnerable settings.

Alongside the incoming vaccine supply, the Health Ministry has launched a targeted protection operation in nursing homes and geriatric institutions, distributing kits to 255 facilities with items that include masks, diagnostic tests, vaccines, and Tamiflu.

Mask guidance is back, but narrowly tailored: the ministry recommends that at-risk populations consider wearing masks in closed spaces and crowded public places, and it also advises masks for medical staff and visitors in geriatric institutions to protect residents.

The message from Israel’s health leadership is blunt: treat influenza like the serious respiratory threat it can become, especially for infants, seniors, pregnant women, and people with chronic illnesses.

The country’s rapid vaccine procurement and nursing-home protection push reflects a system trying to stay ahead of a wave before it overwhelms wards already strained by winter viruses.

A 15-year-old boy was killed Thursday afternoon after falling from a height of about 100 meters at a construction site at the entrance to Jerusalem during an Orthodox Jewish demonstration against drafting yeshiva students into the army.

Magen David Adom (MDA) paramedics found the teen unconscious and without signs of life, suffering from multiple severe injuries.

“He was lying at the foot of a high-rise construction site, without a pulse and not breathing,” said MDA paramedic Yishi Shemesh and emergency medical technician Daniel Eliyakim.

“We performed medical examinations, but his injury was critical, and unfortunately we had no choice but to declare him dead.”

Police have opened an investigation.

Suicide rates have continued to rise post 9/11 among American soldiers.

The number of deaths last summer attributed to U.S. soldiers committing suicide is double the total number of servicemen who have died from COVID-19 since the beginning of the pandemic.

Some 163 service members committed suicide during the months of July, August and September of last year, according to a Pentagon report, while a total of 86 members have died due to COVID-19. Suicide deaths include those of 70 active service members, 56 reserve members, and 37 members of the National Guard.

This is despite the number of COVID-19 deaths doubling since September due to the Delta variant. As of September, only 43 service members had died from the virus.

While figures of the last quarter of 2021 have yet to be released, it was found that a total of 476 service members had committed suicide since the beginning of the year until the third quarter. In 2020, the Pentagon listed a total of 701 for all four quarters of the year.

Over the past 20 years, suicide rates among service members have been rising, according to a paper published by U.S. universities Boston and Brown. As of June 2021, the paper estimates, a total of 30,177 soldiers have committed suicide since the post 9/11 wars.

The paper concludes that “High suicide rates mark the failure of the U.S. government and U.S. society to manage the mental health costs of our current conflicts.”
