Janeese Lewis George, the Democratic Socialists of America activist who is poised to become the next mayor of Washington, D.C., told DSA leaders last year that she regretted voting in favor of a 2022 resolution condemning antisemitism.

During an interview with leaders of the Metro D.C. DSA chapter in November 2025, Lewis George said she no longer supported the resolution because, she argued, it conflates criticism of Israel with antisemitism.

In April 2022, as a member of the D.C. city council, Lewis George had sponsored and voted in favor of the resolution, which adopted the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s (IHRA) definition of antisemitism, passed with a unanimous 13-0 vote, and was widely praised as a step to bolster the safety of D.C.’s Jewish community.

The interview, revealed for the first time by the Washington Free Beacon, was part of a series of internal interviews the DSA chapter conducted with candidates running for city government as it mulled whom to endorse ahead of the 2026 election.

The DSA eventually endorsed Lewis George two months after the interview and canvassed aggressively for her during the primary.

After she won the Democratic nomination on June 18, making her the deep-blue city’s presumptive next mayor, the DSA declared that “socialism wins in D.C.”

It represents the latest example of Lewis George appearing to adopt a hardline stance against Israel in an effort to court the DSA’s support.

The socialist group’s chapters across the country have been linked to a number of antisemitic incidents nationwide and are openly hostile to Israel, advancing anti-Zionist and divestment campaigns.

In March, Lewis George was forced to issue a statement saying she opposed antisemitism after Jewish Insider reported that she pledged in a DSA questionnaire never to attend events promoting Zionism or travel on political junkets to Israel.

Lewis George, though, has not addressed her comments walking back support for the 2022 antisemitism resolution.

“If this vote came up today, I would not vote for it,” Lewis George said during the November interview after Kurtis Hagans, the chairman of the Metro D.C. DSA, pressed her on her past support for the resolution.

“I firmly believe that anti-Zionism and criticism of Israel is not antisemitism. I think that it’s so important for us in this moment to be clear on that and to stand firm in that. And that’s where my values are and that’s what I believe strongly.”

The 2022 resolution mentions Israel three times.

First, it states that accusing Israel of inventing or exaggerating the Holocaust is an “especially hurtful example of antisemitism.”

Second, it states that drawing comparisons of contemporary Israeli policy to that of the Nazis and holding Jews responsible for the actions of the State of Israel are both antisemitic actions.

And, third, it states that accusing Jews of being more loyal to Israel than to the interests of their own nation “echoes antisemitic tropes of dual loyalty.”

Furthermore, the resolution adopts the IHRA definition of antisemitism, something with which DSA leaders appeared particularly concerned during their interview with Lewis George.

The IHRA defines antisemitism as “a certain perception of Jews, which may be expressed as hatred toward Jews,” and lists examples such as inciting violence against Jews, denying or minimizing the Holocaust, and holding Jews collectively responsible for Israel’s actions.

The IHRA definition, though, explicitly states that “criticism of Israel similar to that leveled against any other country cannot be regarded as antisemitic.”

Lewis George’s campaign did not respond to a request for comment.

More than 30 countries, and dozens of municipalities in the United States, have adopted the definition.

President Donald Trump adopted it in a 2019 executive order, and the Biden administration recognized it as “the most prominent definition of antisemitism.”

The Anti-Defamation League, American Jewish Committee, and the Jewish Community Relations Council of Greater Washington, among other organizations, all supported the 2022 resolution.

“The resolution demonstrates a firm commitment to the safety of the Jewish people, which is particularly essential at a time when acts of antisemitism are on the rise at home and abroad,” the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations said at the time.

In addition to her comments on the resolution, Lewis George told the Metro D.C. DSA leaders that, if elected mayor, she will “fight against unjust repression of pro-Palestinian activists” and support legislation divesting public funds from Israeli companies, including Cellebrite, an Israeli firm that provides software to the Metropolitan Police Department that aids criminal investigations.

Members of the Democratic Socialists of America’s San Francisco chapter were accused of initiating the protest.

Antisemitic chants broke out during a political event in San Francisco Wednesday afternoon after protesters shifted from slogans about wealth taxation to targeting Jews, prompting a public condemnation from Mayor Daniel Lurie.

Lurie said individuals present at the event began chanting “tax the rich” before changing the chant to “tax the Jews.”

The gathering was organized by the mayor and District Five Supervisor Bilal Mahmood and included labor leaders and workers to announce an economic plan focused on job creation and housing, according to Lurie.

“This was an event I put on with [District Five] Supervisor [Bilal] Mahmood, labor leaders, and dozens of workers to announce a plan that creates more jobs for those workers and housing for San Franciscans,” Lurie wrote in a post on X/Twitter.

He added, “Suggesting that Jews are wealthy is a tired trope, and targeting our community at an event focused on creating economic opportunity for San Franciscans is decidedly antisemitic.”

In video from the incident, a woman among the protesters was heard shouting, “tax Israel and ‘tax the Jews.’” A witness told the New York Post that the antisemitic chanting continued for about two minutes.

Lurie said he would not tolerate antisemitism or any other form of hatred and said such behavior had no place in San Francisco. He did not identify the individuals responsible for the chants.

Members of the Democratic Socialists of America’s San Francisco chapter were accused of initiating the protest, according to the mayor’s account.

The DSA San Francisco chapter denied that the woman filmed making the antisemitic chants was affiliated with the organization, despite her presence at their protest.

The incident comes amid continued scrutiny of the Democratic Socialists of America following earlier controversies.

On October 8, 2023, the day after the October 7 massacre, the Democratic Socialists of America held a rally in Manhattan celebrating the attack.

Participants at that event chanted “700,” reflecting the confirmed death toll from the massacre at the time.

No arrests were reported in connection with Wednesday’s incident, and city officials did not announce any immediate action beyond the mayor’s condemnation.

The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) was already pretty explicit in its support for killing Jews after Oct 7. A DSA founder, Maurice Isserman, resigned after that “to protest the DSA leadership’s politically and morally bankrupt response to the horrific Hamas October 7 anti-Jewish pogrom.”

And it got worse from there.

The DSA pushed out Rep. Alexandria Ocasio Cortez for being insufficiently anti-Israel and Rep. Jamal Bowman had to beg to be let back in. Both AOC and Bowman are militantly anti-Israel so this was up there with the KKK or the Nation of Islam kicking out members for not being racist enough.

Over the summer, DSA Palestine argued that, “One could (and should) very well argue that in a settler colonial context there are no such things as ‘civilians’, but disregarding that even, it’s total folly to honestly compare settlers perpetrating pogroms to resistance groups deploying violence to liberate themselves.”

Translated from academese gibberish that meant that Jews were not legitimately civilians and that Hamas was fundamentally more justified in killing Jewish civilians than Jews were in defending themselves.

The DSA’s Marxist (literally) Red Star Caucus was even more blunt with a post headlined, “We Do Not Condemn Hamas, and Neither Should You.”

The post argued that, “Hamas is at the center of the popular front for resistance, all major parties in the resistance are aligned with it, and all of our enemies (the US and Israel) are against it. There is no way to oppose Hamas—or any other element of the popular front—without standing in stark opposition to the entire resistance movement.”

Now the DSA’s National site decided to die a toe in the terrorist pool, going beyond the usual selective bias, critiques of Israel, and hysterical attacks, while pretending that the Arab Muslim settlers who call themselves ‘Palestinians’ are just a mass of unarmed civilians.

Titled, ‘Why Palestinians Engage in Armed Struggle’, when you get past the lies and distorted history, eventually gets to the point.

“The military capacity of Gaza’s guerilla factions has demonstrated itself to be a singularly powerful force at reuniting Palestinians around the possibilities of a military path to liberation. Despite the ongoing genocide, support for armed resistance as a tactic has remained high since October 7th.”

The article makes it clear that Hamas is a part of these “factions” and then praises the “military capacity of these guerilla factions”, celebrates assorted Hamas victories, and claims that “armed struggle is one of the only available methods of struggle that remains for the Palestinian people.”

The DSA cautions that the article endorsing terrorism against Jews may or may not be its view. “Signed articles do not necessarily represent the views of DSA.”

Suffice it to say that the DSA is okay with promoting terrorism and with maintaining strategic ambiguity about whether it supports killing Jews.

This is significant because multiple local, state, and federal elected officials affiliate with the DSA.

While the DSA ousted AOC, and Rep. Cori Bush and Rep. Bowman lost races that the Left vocally blamed on the Jews, Rep. Rashida Tlaib is affiliated with the DSA, as well as multiple local officials including Sen. Julia Salazar in New York, Sen. Omar Fateh in Minnesota, Rep. Madinah Wilson-Anton in Delaware, Rep. Abraham Aiyash in Dearborn, Michigan (some of whom were already covered in the Freedom Center’s Election Jihad report).

And this is significant because while Rep. Tlaib’s views are obvious, her affiliation with a radical organization that supports Islamic terrorism and the murder of Jews provides a hard and clear linkage to terrorism.
