By Vered Weiss, World Israel News

The BBC entered a period of abrupt leadership change on Sunday after Director-General Tim Davie resigned in the wake of disclosures pointing to what critics called “serious and systemic bias” across the broadcaster’s news reporting.

The revelations centered on its coverage of the Israel–Gaza war, internal handling of gender-related debates, and the editing of President Donald Trump’s remarks on the day of the January 6 Capitol riot.

Deborah Turness, the BBC’s chief of News and Current Affairs, also stepped down.

Davie, who spent 20 years at the BBC, said his decision was voluntary and that he would assist the board during the transition. His departure followed a week of scrutiny triggered by reporting in The Telegraph, which detailed accusations of one-sided reporting on Gaza and claims that concerns raised by gender-critical staff had been muted.

The report highlighted a distortion in a Panorama documentary that altered the sequence of Trump’s January 6, 2021 speech.

The broadcast removed his call for demonstrators to make their voices heard “peacefully and patriotically,” while presenting excerpts in a way that suggested he incited the crowd.

The corporation is preparing to apologize on Monday, and Chairman Samir Shah is expected to notify Parliament’s culture, media and sport committee of the lapse.

Hours before Davie resigned, Turness sent a message to newsroom employees acknowledging the editing controversy and indicating that a public correction was forthcoming. Her email arrived amid mounting political criticism. Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy said the BBC’s editorial choices in recent months had been “entirely inconsistent,” citing reporting on Israel, Gaza, transgender issues, and the Trump speech.

She said she held numerous discussions with the broadcaster’s top leadership and concluded that its decisions “do not always meet the highest standards.”

By World Israel News Staff

A data analyses of some 1,500 articles about the October 7 massacres and subsequent Israel-Hamas war published by the New York Times revealed that the media outlet presented a narrative to its readership that downplayed Israeli suffering and focused little on Hamas atrocities.

The study was conducted independently by Edieal Pinker, a professor and deputy dean at the Yale School of Management, and published in SSRN, a journal for research papers that have not yet undergone peer review.

“Little mention is made of Israeli casualties post-October 7 or of Palestinian acts of violence post-October 7, even as Israel and Hamas were locked in intensive combat over the eight months of the study period,” the study said, according to a Times of Israel summary.

Ninety-one percent of the articles published by the Times on the conflict did not mention Israeli casualties sustained after October 7, glossing over the fact that dozens of civilians were murdered in terror attacks and by Hezbollah and Hamas bombings.

“The reporting does not give the reader a full understanding of how the war is being experienced by Israelis,” the study said.

The study also noted that only 10% of articles published by the outlet specified that Hamas fighters were killed during battles with Israeli troops, though they mentioned the deaths of Palestinians.

There were more than 10 weeks in which no Times articles acknowledged Hamas members fighting Israel, giving readers the impression that all reported Palestinian deaths were of civilians.

In a statement to the Times of Israel, the New York Times defended its reporting of the war.

A spokesman from the outlet claimed that the newsppaer had “covered this war with more rigor than virtually any other U.S. news organization, reporting on the conflict from all angles,” claiming it had published reports on “previously unknown details about the atrocities committed by Hamas” and the “ferocious military campaign led by the Israeli government.”

The newspaper also claimed that their “editors make careful and deliberate choices about every story we publish to ensure our language, framing, prominence and tone remain true to our mission of independent journalism.”

Notably, the Times statement did not directly acknowledge or address any of the data-based points around its coverage that were highlighted in the study.

Many Palestinian prisoners freed by Israel have also seemed emaciated upon release.’

By Vered Weiss, World Israel News

Israel’s Government Press Office (GPO) criticized CNN on Saturday night for a headline that equated the condition of freed Israeli hostages with that of released Palestinian prisoners.

The CNN headline read: “Three freed Israeli hostages appear in poor health. Many Palestinian prisoners freed by Israel have also seemed emaciated upon release.”

The claim that Palestinian prisoners were in a similar condition to the emaciated Israeli hostages directly contradicted observed realities.

Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar wrote on X, “For over a year, the international community has been misled by false claims of ‘starvation’ in Gaza.”

“But the images speak for themselves: Hamas terrorists and Gaza residents appear well-fed, while the Israeli hostages resemble Holocaust survivors—the only ones visibly suffering from starvation,” he continued.

The GPO released a statement regarding CNN’s headline, stating, “The GPO condemns any attempt by the media to establish a comparison and/or symmetry between the hostages, who were abducted from their homes in a brutal terrorist attack and held in starvation for a long period, and convicted terrorists who were serving their sentences in Israeli prisons.”

“Such a narrative runs contrary to every ethical standard of journalism.”

Last week, the BBC faced criticism for referring to Israeli hostages as “prisoners,” implying a moral equivalency with the terrorists Israel was compelled to release as part of the hostage deal.

Last Friday, Hamas identified three men—35-year-old Yarden Bibas, 54-year-old Ofer Kalderon, and 65-year-old Keith Siegel—as the captives returned to Israel as part of the ongoing hostage agreement.

Later that day, BBC News anchor Nicky Schiller referred to the three captives as “Israeli prisoners.”

Hours later, however, the broadcaster issued a correction and an apology for Schiller’s wording.

“Earlier today on BBC News we reported on the names of those three Israeli hostages who are due to be freed tomorrow,” the BBC stated.

“At one point during the coverage, we mistakenly called the hostages ‘prisoners,’ and we would like to apologize.”

The apology marks the latest instance of the British news network walking back its reporting on the Israel-Hamas conflict.

By Vered Weiss, World Israel News

Samir Shah, incoming chair of the BBC said on Wednesday he will conduct a thorough review of the network’s coverage of the Israel-Hamas war including criticism that it refuses to use the word “terrorists” regarding Hamas members and complaints of anti-Israel bias.

Shah admitted, “It seems to me there is enough in terms of criticism of the way the BBC has covered this war.”

Shah said he will “consider very carefully” the BBC‘s refusal to call Hamas members “terrorists” rather than referring to Hamas as a “proscribed terror organization,” admitting the latter phrase, “feels a bit clunky to me, it’s not the natural speech of a reporter.”

Last month, the BBC issued an apology under pressure after it falsely claimed that the IDF was targeting doctors in Gaza’s Shifa hospital.

In addition, the BBC was quick to blame the IDF for a deadly explosion at another Gaza hospital even though the IDF and outside sources proved the cause of the blast were misfired Islamic Jihad rockets.

Among the most egregious examples of faulty BBC coverage of the event was from journalist Jeremy Bowen, who declared on the BBC’s “Behind the Stories” program that he didn’t “regret one thing” about his false reporting claiming that Israel was responsible for the explosion at the Al-Ahli Arab Hospital that supposedly “flattened” the building.

Although the BBC issued a correction of their inaccurate coverage, Bowen insisted, “So it broke in, I suppose, mid-evening. And to answer your question, no, I don’t regret one thing in my reporting, because I think I was measured throughout. I didn’t race to judgment.

When Bowen was confronted about his exaggeration that the hospital was “flattened,” he replied, “Oh, yeah. Well, I got that wrong.”

Regarding the upcoming review of the BBC’s coverage of the war, Shah said, “It is not an adequate enough response [for the BBC] to say ‘both sides are criticizing us and therefore we must be doing something right,’”

He concluded, “The ambition of a BBC journalist should be that neither side is criticizing us and [everyone] thinks we’re doing well.”
