United Nations Special Rapporteur for the Palestinians Francesca Albanese posted an antisemitic cartoon on social media to promote a report accusing Israel of committing genocide in the Gaza Strip — the latest in a long pattern of posts in which she used blatantly antisemitic rhetoric and imagery.

Albanese has repeatedly shared anti-Israel and antisemitic content online. She has justified the Oct. 7 massacres as a response to “the Occupation” and claimed that the brutal murders, rapes, and acts of mutilation were not motivated by antisemitism.

Writing to her 1.2 million followers on Instagram, Albanese promoted her latest report to the UN, titled “Gaza Genocide: a Collective Crime.”

Albanese shared an illustration of hands holding a spiderweb spanning the globe, with money and military equipment inside the web. Antisemites have often used spiderweb imagery to depict supposed Jewish control of global networks, industries, and governments.

Despite the image clearly showing a spiderweb, Albanese’s office attempted to deny the antisemitic nature of the illustration. In a statement to The Times of Israel, her team claimed the cartoon “portrays a net,” adding, “We regret if it was perceived as” a spiderweb.

Albanese is currently facing a lawsuit in U.S. federal court over her statements claiming that American pro-Israel nonprofits are complicit in apartheid and war crimes.

In September, several Jewish organizations and Christian charities sued her after she falsely accused them of assisting Israel in what she alleges is genocide against Palestinians.

“If a racist antisemite gains a position of power and proceeds to abuse the public platform she enjoys in order to perpetuate lies about American religious organizations for their compassion toward and allyship with the Jewish people and the Jewish State of Israel by smearing them and calling for them to be blacklisted and sanctioned, she can and should be held liable for defamation,” said Rachel Sebbag, an attorney for the National Jewish Advocacy Center (NJAC)d.

The United Nations’ Special Rapporteur for Gaza and the West Bank called for international actions against Israel’s “genocidal economy,” days after she was sanctioned by the U.S. for her longstanding hostility towards Israel.

Speaking at an international conference in Bogotá, Colombia focused on the ongoing Israel-Hamas war, Francesca Albanese urged world leaders to take steps to punish Israel for the conflict.

“Each state must immediately review and suspend all ties with the State of Israel … and ensure its private sector does the same,” Albanese said at the conference.

“The Israeli economy is structured to sustain the occupation that has now turned genocidal.”

Albanese said that the “time has come to act in pursuit of justice and peace – grounded in rights and freedoms for all, and not mere privileges for some, at the expense of the annihilation of others.”

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced last week that Washington was imposing sanctions on Albanese, citing her staunch anti-Israel bias and repeated promotion of blood libels against the Jewish State.

“That bias has been apparent across the span of her career, including recommending that the ICC, without a legitimate basis, issue arrest warrants targeting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant,” he told reporters.

Albanese called the sanctions, which triggered mass resignations of UN committee members investigating Israel, a “mafia intimidation” tactic.

“I want to remind everyone [that] the reason why these sanctions are being imposed is the pursuit of justice,” Albanese said.

“Of course I’ve been critical of Israel. It has been committing genocide and crimes against humanity and war crimes,” she added.

The Italian attorney, who denied that October 7th was triggered by Jew hatred and said that Israel was to blame for the massacres, has a long history of public remarks justifying terror.

The United States has imposed sanctions on Francesca Albanese, the United Nations Human Rights Council’s special rapporteur for the Palestinian territories, citing what it called a campaign of political and economic warfare against the US and Israel.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced the move on Wednesday, stating that Albanese’s actions—including outreach to the International Criminal Court (ICC) and public accusations against American companies—warranted direct sanctions under President Donald Trump’s Executive Order 14203.

“Today, I am imposing sanctions on Francesca Paola Albanese,” Rubio said in a statement, citing her “efforts to investigate, arrest, detain, or prosecute nationals of the United States or Israel, without the consent of those two countries.”

Rubio said the US was acting to protect its sovereignty and that of its allies.

He accused Albanese of abusing her UN position to advance political agendas hostile to the West.

“Albanese has spewed unabashed antisemitism, expressed support for terrorism, and open contempt for the United States, Israel, and the West,” the statement said.

Albanese, who was appointed in 2022, has become a polarizing figure in diplomatic circles for her harsh criticism of Israel’s conduct in Gaza.

Last month, her office published a report calling on international corporations—including Alphabet, Amazon, Microsoft, and Palantir—to reconsider ties to Israel’s economy, citing unsubstantiated allegations of apartheid and war crimes.

The report claimed that these companies risked offering material support to what it described as possible international crimes.

“Any decision to continue engagement in Israel’s economy is therefore done with knowledge of the crimes that may be taking place,” the report said.

The US had already called for her removal in April, after she was reappointed for a second three-year term.

At the time, the US Mission to the UN labeled her claims of genocide and apartheid “false and offensive,” and slammed the UN Human Rights Council for “tolerating antisemitic hatred,” reported Bloomberg.

Albanese’s post is not under the authority of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. 

Special rapporteurs are appointed by the Human Rights Council and operate independently.

The US withdrew from that body in February.

The State Department accused Albanese of recently escalating her campaign by sending letters to global businesses in multiple industries—technology, defense, energy, finance, and hospitality—warning them of potential ICC investigations based on their operations in Israel.

“She has recently escalated this effort by writing threatening letters to dozens of entities worldwide,” Rubio said.

“We will not tolerate these campaigns of political and economic warfare, which threaten our national interests and sovereignty.”

The sanctions, issued under an executive order originally aimed at the ICC, reflect Washington’s view that Albanese’s attempts to involve the court are a violation of US and Israeli rights as non-members of the Rome Statute, the treaty that established the ICC.

President Trump signed Executive Order 14203 in 2020 to block assets and deny entry to individuals who engage with the ICC against US or allied personnel without consent.

The US has long opposed ICC jurisdiction over its citizens and Israeli officials, calling it politically motivated.

Albanese has reportedly urged the ICC to issue arrest warrants for senior Israeli leaders, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant.

Rubio reiterated that the US would continue to counter what he described as “lawfare” efforts aimed at delegitimizing its allies.

“We will continue to take whatever actions we deem necessary to respond to lawfare, to check and prevent illegitimate ICC overreach and abuse of power, and to protect our sovereignty and that of our allies,” he said.

Hillel Neuer, Executive Director of United Nations Watch was delighted with Secretary Rubio’s decision, posting on X that “Justice is served. Good triumphs over evil.”

Francesca Albanese refuses to condemn the Hamas terror group, instead blaming France and the international community for “doing nothing to prevent” Israeli “oppression.”

A United Nations official claimed that the mass slaughter of some 1,200 Israelis on October 7th was not fundamentally antisemitic, but rather a “response to oppression.”

Francesca Albanese, the United Nations Special Rapporteur “on the Occupied Palestinian Territories,” slammed French President Emmanuel Macron on X for referring to the Oct. 7th atrocities as being antisemitic in nature.

The ‘greatest antisemitic massacre of our century’? No, Mr. @EmmanuelMacron,” wrote Albanese on Saturday evening.

“The victims of 7/10 were not killed because of their Judaism, but in response to Israel’s oppression.”

Albanese did not condemn the Hamas terror group for committing the brutal attack, which included acts of mass murder of elderly people and children, rape, and mutilation.

Rather, she stressed that “France [and] the international community did nothing to prevent” alleged Israeli oppression, and therefore shared blame for the deadliest terror attack in Israeli history.

The French Foreign Ministry swiftly responded to Albanese on the X platform, tweeting that ‘disputing” the antisemitic motivations of Hamas is “wrong.”

Albanese’s seeming justification of the massacre is a “disgrace,” the tweet continued.

“These comments are all the more scandalous since the fight against antisemitism and all forms of racism are at the heart of the founding of the UN,” the Ministry added.

Despite her UN role officially requiring her to maintain a neutral position on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Albanese has made numerous antisemitic public remarks.

She has said that the U.S. and Europe are “subjugated” by a powerful Jewish lobby and Holocaust guilt, respectively.

The establishment of the State of Israel was “just as terrible, tragic, and unspeakable” event for Palestinians as the Holocaust was for Jews, Albanese claimed in 2021.

During a December 2022 speech at a Hamas-organized conference, Albanese told Gazans that they “have a right to resist this occupation.”

Her statement appeared to encourage violent terror attacks targeting Israel.
