Israel is opening its Erez crossing point and allowing Gazans with work permits to enter the country, despite ongoing violent riots, including shootings and arson attacks, along the border.

Last week, Israel shuttered the Erez crossing as a punitive measure aimed at stopping Gazans from daily rioting and incendiary balloon attacks, which have sparked a number of fires in nearby Israeli communities.

But on Wednesday evening, the Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT) announced that the crossing would be opened on Thursday, allowing Gazans employed in Israel to enter the country.

COGAT added in their media statement that the status of the crossing was subject to ongoing security evaluations and could potentially be shuttered once again, should tensions escalate.

Just hours earlier, dozens of Palestinians clashed with IDF border units, shooting at and launching projectiles at soldiers.

During a government ceremony commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Yom Kippur War, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant acknowledged the ongoing deterioration in security for residents of Israel’s south.

Gallant said that should an Israeli soldier or civilian be hurt, Jerualem would respond forcefully.

“We do not want an escalation and we are not aiming for battle, but if we get to a situation in which it is necessary to act, Operation Shield and Arrow from a few months ago should serve as a reminder for every terrorist entity as to the capabilities of the defense establishment,” he said.

“We will not hesitate to use the full force at our disposal to ensure the safety of the citizens and to restore peace to the area,” Gallant added.

“It’s important to remind the terrorist entities in Gaza what the actual balance of power is between the IDF and Hamas and its partners.”

Gallant’s sentiments were backed up by the IDF Spokesperson’s Unit, which posted on social media site X that “whoever terrorizes us will be hurt to the point of being killed.”

The unit added that “we will not allow terrorism, we have room to breathe and a wide toolbox. The IDF will continue to protect the borders in order to allow a peaceful holiday for the citizens of the State of Israel.”

In response to violent, daily riots along the Gaza border, the IDF initiated an airstrike targeting a Hamas position on Saturday.

During Saturday’s riot, Palestinians fired at the direction of IDF soldiers.

The IDF employed a drone to execute the strike on the Hamas post, according to the IDF Spokesperson’s Unit.

Rioters also engaged in other terror-related activities such as tire-burning, hurling improvised explosive devices, and directing gunfire toward Israeli forces stationed along the border.

Video footage revealed terrorists deploying balloons equipped with incendiary devices toward the border.

In retaliation, the military implemented riot control measures, resorting to live fire in certain scenarios. Previous incidents, including one on Friday, necessitated IDF intervention in Gaza, following the ignition of three fires in southern Israel by incendiary devices transported via balloons over the border.

The ongoing conflict has seen a surge in near-daily border riots in recent weeks, with the IDF conducting drone strikes on two Hamas observation posts in the Gaza Strip. These strikes were a direct response to the persistent release of arson balloons and widespread rioting. The military identified the launch sites of the balloons in the vicinity of the targeted posts.

The Hamas-run health ministry claimed that 26 Palestinians sustained injuries due to Israeli gunfire in Friday’s riot. Seven Palestinians have been killed, but only one was fatally shot by Israeli forces. The rest died mishandling an improvised explosive device intended to blow up the border wall.

For the second time in as many days days, hundreds of Palestinians gathered to riot at the border separating the Gaza Strip and Israel, amid calls by Palestinian terror groups for a third intifada.

Rioters ignited tires and set off explosive devices near the security barrier, the IDF said, and added that it responded using riot dispersal techniques, including resorting to live fire in some instances.

According to Hamas-run health ministry in the Gaza Strip, Israeli fire wounded five Palestinians during the clashes.

The recent surge in border rioting comes at a time when the IDF has been taking proactive steps to maintain security in the region. On Friday, the IDF executed a drone strike targeting a Hamas observation post in the Gaza Strip following the renewed riots at the border.

Six Palestinian rioters were killed while attempting to detonate a makeshift bomb along the border at a riot on Wednesday.

Starting from the end of March 2018, weekly protests became a norm at the border and persisted almost every Friday until the close of 2019. The rioters, then and now, demand the lifting of Israeli-imposed restrictions on the movement of individuals and goods in and out of the Gaza enclave. They also call for the right of return for Palestinian refugees and their descendants to Israel.

On Saturday, deputy head of Hamas’ so-called politburo Saleh al-Arouri – who was behind several terror attacks against Israelis – and deputy secretary general of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), Jamil Mazhar, called on the Palestinian leadership to carry out an intifada.

“The Palestinian Authority must return to the intifada to achieve national unity and resolve the Palestinian question on national and democratic grounds,” they said at a summit in Beirut.

Dozens of women have taken part in a Mothers’ March to the Gaza border to demand that the IDF change its rules of engagement, following the shooting of a soldier, Barel Shmueli, on the Gaza border in August.

The women, mothers of IDF soldiers, reservists and activists, walked 15 miles from Ashdod to kibbutz Yad Mordechai on the Gaza border on Sunday, a journey of nine hours, to call on IDF Chief of Staff Aviv Kohavi to reduce restrictions placed on IDF soldiers when faced with combatants.

Currently, soldiers have to wait for explicit permission from officers to fire, even if they identify a clear threat.

In an interview with Israel’s Channel 12, a soldier identified as A explained: “Even if you see someone holding a Molotov cocktail or a grenade… if you don’t receive permission from the battalion commander, brigade commander or whoever they designated, you cannot shoot.”

He added: “I personally saw a situation in which a Molotov cocktail was thrown at soldiers in the battalion and burned their legs and they needed to run and roll around in the sand [to extinguish the fire]. There was a sniper from another battalion who said that he saw the incident but didn’t shoot because he didn’t receive authorization.”

The protest was sparked by the death of Barel Shmueli, who was seriously injured when shot in the head at point blank range during riots on the Gaza border in August. Shmueli later died in hospital despite undergoing treatment for his wounds.

The IDF was severely criticized over current regulations almost immediately following the shooting, as many felt they were a contributing factor in Shmueli’s death.

One soldiers who fought alongside Shmueli told Walla News: “The rules of engagement were not clear. They told us what to do when our life is in danger but also said we need special approval to shoot in certain cases.” He noted that “hundreds of Palestinians made it to the fence” before an approval was given to use rubber bullets on the day of Shmueli’s shooting.

Another said: “we didn’t know we were in danger, we didn’t see armed terrorists approaching the fence … a soldier would never position his rifle through a slit in the wall [as Shmueli did] if he knew that there were terrorists underneath him.”

He added: “they spoke to us about protesters … no one warned us about terrorists.”

The mother’s march was co-organized by Im Tirtzu, the Choosing Life Forum of Bereaved Families, Torat Lehima, and the Association of Community Rabbis.

Im Tirtzu CEO Matan Peleg, who participated in the march, said: “The IDF needs to be attentive to the soldiers, and when soldiers relay that they are being prevented from defending themselves, we need to listen to them.”

Tzofia Nahon, who initiated the march, said: “IDF soldiers should be able to fire on terrorists without waiting for authorization, and without being subject to the jurists or brigade commanders. Our soldiers are being abandoned in the face of the enemy. Together with the family of Barel, may God avenge his blood, we are demanding of the Chief of Staff: immediately change the open-fire regulations.”

According to Palestinian sources, Hamas has decided to gradually escalate the riots at the border and the number of arson balloon attacks as a pressure tactic against Israel.

The Israel Air Force (IAF) struck Hamas targets overnight Saturday in retaliation for the latest spate of arson balloons and riots on the Gaza border, the IDF Spokesperson’s Unit announced Sunday.

Fighter jets hit a military compound used for both training and weapons production, as well as a terror tunnel shaft near Jabaliya, the IDF said.

“The IDF will continue to respond aggressively to Hamas’ terror attempts.”

About 300 Gazans demonstrated violently Saturday night in the northern Gaza Strip, in the same area where IDF sniper Barel Shmueli was critically wounded last week by a terrorist shooting him in the head at point-blank range. While most kept some 200 meters from the border, several dozen of the rioters approached the fence to try and damage it, burning tires and throwing improvised explosive devices (IEDs) at the IDF soldiers guarding the border.

The troops responded with riot-dispersal means that included shooting gas grenades and low-velocity, low caliber bullets at the leaders that can wound but rarely kill the target. The Palestinian Health Ministry announced that 11 people had been injured in the clashes, three of them moderately.

“We hear the explosions very well,” a resident of Kibbutz Nachal Oz told Walla News. “Every few minutes we hear booms. The feeling is quite unpleasant. There’s something going on here all the time, it hasn’t been over for a long time already.”

“We are functioning; the children are less free to move around but we are trying to maintain a routine,” she said.

On Saturday as well, two fires caused by arson balloons broke out in open fields in the Eshkol Region bordering the coastal enclave. The Fire and Rescue Services and a Jewish National Fund team put out the blazes, and there were no injuries.

This follows last week’s shooting of Shmueli and nine near-simultaneous fires set off by the terrorists’ launching of arson balloons that also did damage to brushland near settlements of the Gaza envelope. Then, too, the IDF responded with airstrikes against Hamas military targets.

Hamas threatened weeks ago that it would ratchet up the pressure on Israel with both border riots and arson balloons as the indirect negotiations have faltered between the adversaries for long-term quiet following May’s Operation Guardian of the Walls. Although Israel has agreed to let Qatar return to sending $100 a month to 100,000 poor Gazan families ($10 million) through the UN via pre-loaded cash cards, Hamas is demanding that its civil servants be paid as well.

The terror organization has also not given any credit to Israel for a series of financial concessions it made in the past week, including the importation of more goods and the issuance of entry permits for a thousand merchants into Israel.

Hamas is completely refusing Israel’s demand to link renewed aid to the return of the bodies of two IDF soldiers and two live, mentally disturbed civilians it has been holding since 2014 and 2015, respectively. Jerusalem also won’t budge until all arson balloon attacks cease, one senior official told Israel Hayom last week.

Hamas also wants Israel to remove its long-held maritime blockade on the Strip, which is a non-starter as far as Israel is concerned. The blockade is considered essential to prevent the smuggling of massive amounts of weapons into Gaza from the sea.

Palestinian sources have reported that the decision has been made that as of this week, there would be a gradual escalation against Israel, even though reportedly neither side is interested in going so far as another serious round of attacks.

The Israeli Air Force (AIF) attacked several sites in central and northern Gaza used for storing and manufacturing weapons on Saturday night, following mass riots along the Gaza border fence on that lead to an Israeli soldier being critically injured.

The soldier, later identified as St.-Sgt. Barel Shmueli, 21, was shot in his head from point-blank range. He was evacuated by helicopter to the Soroka Medical Center in Beersheba for emergency surgery. As of Sunday morning, he is still in intensive care and in life-threatening condition.

According to Israeli reports, Shmueli is a sniper in the Border Police Mista’arvim special unit, which operates undercover by assimilating among Arab populations and carrying out intelligence gathering, law enforcement, hostage rescue and counter-terrorism operations. He was deployed along the Gaza border to assist the IDF in the anticipated riots over the weekend.

“This is a very tough incident, the entire unit has suffered a blow,” a senior Border Police officer told Maariv.

Videos circulating online showed the shocking moment when Palestinian rioters try to grab Shmueli’s rifle through a slit in the barrier, when another rioter carrying a pistol suddenly runs toward the opening and fires several bullets through it.

“The soldier fought back and managed to prevent [the rioters] from stealing his weapon,” the IDF reported, before confirming that the incident led to Shmueli’s serious injury.

Following the incident,  Shmueli’s parents, Yossi and Nitza, blamed the IDF for failing to protect their son, according to Israeli media, and questioned the IDF’s rules of engagement that they believe led to the tragic incident.

“How do they let them get to close to the soldiers? How can they get so close and yet we don’t shoot? It’s our rules of engagement. They came there to kill him. This is a big failure of the IDF,” they said.

Starting on Saturday afternoon, hundreds of Palestinians approached the security barrier and confronted Israeli troops that were deployed along the border, leading to major clashes throughout the day and to dozens of injuries.

Over 40 rioters were injured, including a 13-year-old who is in critical condition, according to Palestinian reports.

“During the riots hundreds of protesters approached the barrier in the northern part of the Strip. The protesters attempted to climb the barrier and confronted IDF soldiers. The troops were well prepared and utilized riot dispersal means, as well as Ruger fire and sniper fire when necessary,” the IDF Spokesperson’s Unit said in a statement.

The riots, which lasted for about 3 hours, were part of a mass rally organized by Hamas to mark 52 years since the burning of the Al-Aqsa Mosque and attended by thousands of Palestinians marching near the border from the early afternoon.

The rally that quickly developed into violent clashes with the IDF, was carried out despite Israel’s recent approval of a deal that would allow the transfer of Qatari aid to the Gaza Strip via the United Nations.

Prior to Israel’s attack overnight, Defense Minister Benny Gantz addressed the events along the border in an interview with Channel 13 and said that “these are very serious incidents and we will respond to them.”

Hamas’ renewed weekly protests came as leaders from the terror group and the smaller but more radical Islamic Jihad were in Cairo, talking with Egyptian mediators about cementing a cease-fire with Israel.

Both Hamas and Islamic Jihad launch rockets at Israeli civilians, with the former operating cells in Judea and Samaria that commit terror attacks at the direction of Gaza-based handlers.

Organizers of the marches largely kept protesters from burning tires or throwing firebombs, which are standard activities at the riots, only a few Palestinians approaching the security barrier to hurl stones at Israeli troops with slingshots.

The health ministry said 14 Palestinians were wounded by Israeli fire, four of them with live gunshots.

Hamas had put the weekly marches on hold since mid-November following a short round of cross-border fighting with Israel.

The fighting began after Israel eliminated a senior Islamic Jihad commander, after which the terror group launched around 450 rockets at Israel. Over the past decade, Israel and Hamas have fought three wars and dozens of shorter skirmishes.

“[W]e will continue the protests until the siege is broken,” said Hazem Qassem, a Hamas spokesman, referring to a blockade maintained by Egypt and Israel to prevent infiltration by terrorists from the coastal enclave.

Unconfirmed reports say Egypt has proposed a five-year truce that will see economic incentives to Gaza to sustain calm.

After  Palestinian terrorists sent five rockets and an explosive-laden drone from Gaza into Israeli territory following a day of violent rioting along the border, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued a warning to the faction presumed responsible for the attacks.

“Hamas is responsible for all aggression emanating from the Gaza Strip. Any attempt to harm our citizens and our soldiers will be met with a forceful response,” Netanyahu declared in a statement on Saturday, according to Times of Israel.

There were no reports of injuries and no Palestinian group claimed responsibility for the rockets on Friday.

On Saturday, Palestinians sent an explosive device into Israel using a drone, which reportedly damaged an army vehicle. Following that attack, the IDF launched a counter-strikes on positions in Gaza.

In the past, the Hamas terror group and its sometime rival Islamic Jihad have taken credit for deadly rocket attacks on Israeli civilians. Both groups are funded and armed by Iran, using hundreds of millions of dollars in foreign aid from the Islamic Republic to continue their terror programs targeting Israelis.

Earlier in the day on Friday, Palestinians violently rioted along the border as part of a Hamas-orchestrated campaign targeting Israeli soldiers with sniper fire, explosives, and attempts to infiltrate Israeli territory to commit attacks within southern Israel.

Two Palestinian rioters were killed on Friday by IDF troops defending the border.

According to the Israeli military, more than 6,000 Palestinian rioters engaged in “especially violent” protests on Friday. The rioters threw “a large amount of explosive devices, grenades and firebombs” and damaged parts of the border fence.

Israeli forces also detained two armed Palestinians who crossed the border into Israel.

Israeli troops on Monday arrested an armed Palestinian man attempting to infiltrate into Israel from the Gaza Strip, according to the Israel Defense Forces.

“A short time ago, IDF soldiers arrested a suspect crossing the security fence into Israeli territory from the Gaza Strip in the south,” the IDF said in a statement on social media. “The suspect was captured and found carrying a knife along with two bullets.”

The attempted breach marked the third time in a single week that Israeli forces have thwarted infiltration attempts from the coastal enclave.

On Saturday, four heavily armed men were killed attempting to enter Israel from southern Gaza.

Less than a day later, IDF shot and killed a terrorist who opened fire on troops near the fence.

Thousands of Palestinian rioted along the Gaza-Israel border on Friday, and the Israeli army said some in the crowd hurled explosive devices and grenades toward the border fence in the southern Gaza Strip.

Thousands of Palestinian rioted along the Gaza-Israel border on Friday, and the Israeli army said some in the crowd hurled explosive devices and grenades toward the border fence in the southern Gaza Strip.

The IDF announced on Thursday that troops accidentally shot a Hamas operative, who was reportedly preventing two other Palestinians from breaching the border.

Israeli troops shot and killed a member of the Hamas terror group in the northern Gaza Strip on Thursday in what the military later described as a mistake.

It was the first fatality along the volatile border since an unofficial cease-fire was reached in May and raised the risk of inadvertently sparking a new round of violence.

Hours after the shooting, the Israeli military said that soldiers had spotted two Palestinians near the border fence and “misidentified” a member of the Hamas unit tasked with monitoring Palestinian rioters near the security barrier.

Since March 2018, Hamas has orchestrated violent rioting along the border, including snipers, Molotov cocktail hurlers, and cells of Palestinians who launch airborne incendiary devices into Israel.

The Hamas member killed on Thursday was apparently part of a unit responsible for reining in rioters when the terror group seeks to deescalate violence.

“In retrospect, it appears that the IDF troops who arrived at the location misidentified the Hamas restraint operative to be an armed terrorist and fired as a result of this misunderstanding,” the IDF said. It said the incident was being reviewed.

Earlier, Hamas accused the army of “deliberately” firing at one of its members, 28-year-old Mahmoud al-Adham, in the town of Beit Hanoun. The terror group, which rules Gaza and has launched hundreds of rockets at Israeli civilians during the past year, vowed to retaliate.

Israel and Hamas came to the brink of full blown conflict in May, the worst round of violence between the two sides since a 2014 war.

Palestinian terrorists bombarded Israel with hundreds of rockets, while Israel carried out several hundred airstrikes on terror targets in Gaza. Five Israelis were killed in the rocket barrages.

Egyptian, Qatar and U.N. mediators managed to halt the fighting and are working to strike a lasting cease-fire agreement.

Israel has reportedly agreed to an Egyptian-mediated long-term ceasefire with Hamas, which includes the broadening of the fishing zones off the Gaza coast, the entry of goods and the transfer of Qatari funds into the Strip.

The various factions in Gaza are growing impatient and are demanding that Israel proceed immediately with the understandings, and not wait until Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu establishes a government.

“If the occupation does not meet the understandings, we will reuse the entire arsenal of resistance,” threatened Talal Abu Zarifa, a committee member, underscoring that terror factions have not laid down their weapons.

Sources in Ramallah report that Israel has arrived at understandings with Hamas and the Islamic Jihad terror groups, despite the fact that both sides are denying that such understandings exist.

Hamas and the Islamic Jihad are now threatening to attacks on Israel if it does not finalize the agreement.

Officials in Gaza understand that the political reality in Israel may delay the finalization of the ceasefire.

However, Hamas has warned it will use the Eurovision song contest slated to be held in Tel Aviv next month as leverage after it worked to deescalate the situation in the Strip and scaled back the Hamas prisoners strike. If Israel does not move forward immediately, Hamas says it will not hesitate to attack Israel to defuse internal pressure in the Strip.

The Joint Operations Room, which is comprised of 11 Gazan terror groups, said last week that it is reviewing the possibility of renewing violence on the Gaza border.
