German authorities have launched an investigation into an alleged attempted murder after a 65-year-old man wearing an Israeli flag pin was brutally beaten in southern Germany in what prosecutors suspect was an anti-Israel attack — the latest in a string of antisemitic incidents underscoring an increasingly hostile climate for Jews and Israelis across the country.

According to local police, the victim — a member of the Germany-Israel Friendship Association — was waiting at a traffic light on Monday in Höchberg, a market town near Würzburg in the southern German state of Bavaria, when he found himself next to a young Syrian man.

This man allegedly noticed an Israeli flag pin on the victim’s clothing and initiated a conversation about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the war in Gaza before the encounter escalated into violence.

The victim had no opportunity to respond before the assailant allegedly started punching him in the face, knocking him to the ground, and repeatedly kicking him in the head and upper body.

Even though the victim managed to get back on his feet and attempted to escape, the attacker allegedly chased him and continued the assault, which came to an end only after police officers arrived at the scene.

Shortly afterward, the victim was taken to a local hospital, where he was treated for a fractured vertebra and remains in intensive care with serious injuries.

Volker Beck, president of the Germany-Israel Friendship Association, strongly condemned the attack, warning that a surge in anti-Israel hostility has contributed to an atmosphere where Jews and those openly showing support for Israel are increasingly becoming targets of violence.

“Enough is enough. Anyone who demonizes Israel through accusations of genocide and apartheid creates the climate for attacks like this,” Beck said in a statement.

“No one in Germany fears for their personal safety when displaying Palestinian symbols, but anyone wearing an Israeli symbol is no longer safe in public.”

Local prosecutors confirmed the assailant—who had reportedly been detained the previous evening after harassing shoppers at a market in Höchberg—has since been arrested and remains in pretrial custody as the investigation continues.

Authorities are now treating the case as an attempted murder with indications of anti-Israeli violence motivated by Islamist ideology.

Martin Heilig, the mayor of Würzburg, condemned the assault as a deeply troubling act of violence, warning that attacks targeting people because of their connection to Israel threaten the principles of tolerance, respect, and coexistence at the heart of German society.

“When a citizen is attacked simply for wearing an Israeli pin, it is an unacceptable attack on the foundations of our democratic values,” Heilig said in a statement.

“For our city, this is a clear and unequivocal case of antisemitism, hatred, and violence that has no place in Würzburg or our district.”

“How many Palestinian flags do you see on an average day in any city? Dozens. You can display them openly everywhere. And that despite the fact that all the antisemites, despots, and terror sympathizers of the world gather behind it,” the embassy wrote in a post on X.

“But a single, tiny Israeli flag puts one in mortal danger. In the year 2026. In Germany. The perpetrators are not interested in any kind of peace. It’s not about ‘Palestine,’ let alone about ‘Palestinians.’ For the perpetrators, it’s about hate. It was an attack on all three: Germany, Israel, and our democratic society,” the statement reads.

Like most countries across Europe and the broader Western world, Germany has seen a shocking rise in antisemitic incidents over the last two years, in the wake of the Hamas-led invasion and massacre across southern Israel on Oct. 7, 2023.

According to the latest annual report by Germany’s Federal Association of Departments for Research and Information on Antisemitism (RIAS), a record 8,725 antisemitic incidents were documented nationwide in 2025, representing a slight increase from the previous year and the highest number ever recorded.

While last year’s total reflects only a modest rise of 98 incidents compared with 2024, this latest figure represents a roughly 248 percent surge from 2022, before the Hamas-led invasion of and massacre across southern Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, when 2,480 incidents were documented.

With an average of roughly 24 incidents per day, the report recorded 178 physical assaults and 257 threats, alongside widespread harassment, property damage, and intimidation targeting Jewish individuals and institutions.

Swedish climate change activist Greta Thunberg has drawn criticism after appearing at a demonstration against German defense manufacturer Rheinmetall wearing a T-shirt bearing the slogan “Yalla Intifada.”

Thunberg joined approximately 1,800 protesters in Berlin’s Wedding district on Saturday, July 11, as they marched toward a Rheinmetall facility being converted from automotive-parts production to the manufacture of artillery-shell components.

Photographs from the demonstration showed Thunberg wearing the shirt while standing among protesters. The slogan combines “yalla,” an Arabic expression meaning “come on” or “let’s go,” with “intifada,” the Arabic word for an uprising.

The phrase is used as a rallying cry by some anti-Israel activists. Jewish and pro-Israel organizations argue that it invokes the Palestinian intifadas, particularly the Second Intifada, during which more than 1,000 Israelis were killed in suicide bombings, shootings and other attacks.

“Greta Thunberg attended a protest wearing a ‘Yalla Intifada’ shirt,” the Combat Antisemitism Movement said. “The slogan combines the Arabic word for ‘let’s go’ and Intifada, terror campaigns that killed thousands of people.”

Thunberg did not publicly explain the wording on the shirt.

The protest was organized under the slogan “Wedding without weapons. Together against war” as part of a campaign opposing Rheinmetall’s expansion of ammunition production in Berlin.

Demonstrators marched from Hanne-Sobek-Platz, near the Gesundbrunnen railway station, toward the company’s plant. Berlin police said protesters committed several offenses during the march, including concealing their faces, setting off pyrotechnics and chanting slogans prohibited under German law.

Police also said groups repeatedly attempted to leave the approved route and move toward Rheinmetall’s property. Fifteen people were detained, and authorities ended the demonstration at approximately 7 p.m.

The Berlin facility was formerly operated as an automotive-parts plant by Pierburg, a Rheinmetall subsidiary. It is being converted to manufacture steel bodies for 155-millimeter artillery shells.

The unfinished shell casings are expected to be transported to other facilities for the insertion of explosives and final assembly. More than 200 workers have reportedly been transferred to Rheinmetall’s weapons and ammunition division as part of the conversion.

The project is part of Rheinmetall’s broader effort to expand artillery ammunition production following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and growing demand from Germany and other NATO countries. The company has said it aims to increase annual production to approximately 1.1 million 155 mm shells by 2027.

Anti-Israel organizations involved in the Berlin demonstrations accuse Rheinmetall of supplying weapons used by Israel in Gaza and Lebanon. They have demanded that the company halt deliveries to Israel and abandon the conversion of the Wedding facility.

The July 11 rally was one of several protests against Rheinmetall held in Berlin during the week. Smaller groups also attempted to block access to the plant.

Thunberg participated in another demonstration outside a Rheinmetall office near Berlin’s Brandenburg Gate on July 13. More than 30 activists staged a sit-in, with some attaching themselves to the ground before police removed and detained them.

Following that protest, Thunberg accused Germany of supporting Israel through continued arms transfers.

“We are doing this because it is our duty to protest against injustice and to stand up against genocide,” she said.

Thunberg called for the closure of the new production facility and an end to German weapons shipments to Israel.

The German parliament on Friday advanced a landmark bill criminalizing the denial of Israel’s right to exist and making it punishable by up to five years in prison.

The historic legislation, which was backed by Germany’s upper house of parliament, the Bundesrat, and now heads to the lower house, the Bundestag, for approval, comes amid an 83% increase in antisemitism in Germany since the Oct. 7, 2023 Hamas-led attack on southern Israel.

The initiative, which was introduced by the German western state of Hesse, would impose penalties of up to five years in prison or a fine for statements made publicly that deny Israel’s existence or urge its destruction if they encourage “a willingness to commit acts of antisemitic violence or arbitrary acts.”

The bill is opposed by civil rights groups and free-speech advocates who say it endangers freedom of expression guaranteed by Germany’s Constitution and supported by the German Justice Minister, the State of Israel and German Jewish community leaders as a necessary legal tool to fight the burst of antisemitism in the country.

Israeli Ambassador to Germany Ron Prosor welcomed the parliamentary decision on Friday.

“The signal is clear: Those who deny Israel’s right to exist and spread antisemitic incitement will not get away with it unpunished,” he wrote on X.

“I fervently hope that the German Bundestag will take up the decision and promptly enact the necessary amendment to the Criminal Code.”

The proposed legislation is expected to be examined by the lower house of parliament after the summer recess.

When German authorities arrested three suspected Hamas operatives in 2025, the detainees had already recorded a video claiming responsibility for an attack they were allegedly planning in Europe to coincide with the anniversary of the Oct. 7 massacre, a senior prosecutor revealed on Tuesday.

“A pre-produced video claiming responsibility was seized from one of the suspects,” German Federal Attorney General Jens Rommel told reporters in Karlsruhe, the DPA news agency reported.

Rommel was speaking about nine suspects arrested last October, who are accused of involvement in transporting and storing weapons and ammunition for Hamas.

The video announced an attack on the second anniversary of the Hamas-led Oct. 7, 2023, assault on Israel. Three of the nine suspects were arrested on Oct. 1, 2025.

European security services have uncovered several alleged Hamas plots and networks.

In Germany, authorities arrested four suspected Hamas operatives in 2023 and later charged them with maintaining weapons caches across Europe for use in attacks on Israeli and Jewish targets.

Danish authorities have also linked Hamas to a foiled terror plot targeting Jewish sites.

Last week, Greek Citizen Protection Minister Michalis Chrisochoidis suggested that Hamas had targeted Israelis in Greece, following the indictment of a suspected Palestinian terrorist from Gaza in Crete.

Among the incidents documented in the 2025 report was a case in Kehl, a western border town near Strasbourg, where four members of the Jewish community were insulted and spat on outside a Jewish prayer room.

In the central state of Hesse, a rabbi was shoved in a supermarket in front of his children and had his cellphone snatched. The perpetrators referenced Israel during the attack, according to RIAS.

The report documented four cases of “extreme violence,” including a terrorist attack at the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe in Berlin.

Josef Schuster, president of the Central Council of Jews in Germany, noted that the tally translates to about 24 incidents per day.

The relentless wave of antisemitism sweeping Germany has created an increasingly hostile and dangerous reality as antisemitic incidents surge to unprecedented levels, turning fear, harassment, and exclusion into a routine part of everyday life.

According to new statistics published Tuesday by the German Federal Ministry of the Interior, the number of hate crimes in Germany climbed to a record 22,159 cases in 2025.

In particular, antisemitic offenses were among the fastest-rising categories, reaching an all-time high of 6,548 cases amid a volatile social climate targeting Jews and Israelis.

In the last near-decade, antisemitic hate crimes in Germany have surged dramatically, more than quadrupling from 1,504 recorded cases in 2017.

Among the reported incidents were threats, vandalism, social exclusion, physical assaults on individuals, and attacks on Jewish institutions, highlighting what Jewish leaders describe as an increasingly hostile environment across Germany.

“Incidents of this kind show that antisemitism has long been a part of everyday life – in schools, government offices, and political debates,” Andreas Büttner, the Brandenburg Commissioner against Antisemitism, said in a statement.

In the last few weeks alone, reports have emerged of a pastor being called a “Jewish pig,” Jewish students fearing violence in their schools, and security staff at Berlin Brandenburg Airport allegedly hurling antisemitic insults at two travelers bound for Tel Aviv.

German media reported this week that, after two years in office, Büttner warned of a “creeping normalization” of antisemitism, saying anti-Jewish hostility had increasingly penetrated the mainstream of German society.

He also noted that official statistics likely understate the true extent of antisemitism, as many victims refrain from reporting incidents out of fear or skepticism that authorities will take effective action.

“Hatred of Jews has become louder, more open, and more commonplace, and the boundaries of what is socially acceptable to say have shifted,” Büttner said.

For example, he pointed to a recent case involving a former Brandenburg city councilor who allegedly declared that “a world without Jews would be a better world.”

In a recent incident, a group of customers was reportedly asked to leave a café at Berlin’s Potsdamer Platz — one of the capital’s busiest public squares — on Saturday after one member of the group displayed an Israeli flag.

According to the German newspaper Bild, the incident unfolded on the sidelines of a pro-Palestinian demonstration in Berlin-Mitte, where police reportedly had to shield the group after protesters began harassing them.

In social media videos widely circulated online, the group can be seen sitting in the cordoned-off outdoor area of the Espresso House café when an employee allegedly asked them to leave because one woman was wearing an Israeli flag draped over her shoulders.

After the incident drew widespread media attention and sparked outrage among Jewish leaders and political figures, the café chain’s managing director, Nikolas Niebuhr, said the group had been loudly chanting slogans as demonstrators passed by, which he said was the reason they were asked to leave.

“Guests felt disturbed and complained. We don’t want to be part of a demonstration. We simply want to sell coffee,” Niebuhr told the German newspaper Berliner Zeitung.

Reflecting broader concerns within Germany’s Jewish community, Babka & Krantz, a Jewish bakery owned by Polish and Israeli immigrants in Berlin, closed last week, with its owners pointing to both financial difficulties and antisemitic harassment.

Located in Berlin’s Friedenau district, café owners and married couple Shahar Elkin and Marcin Liera-Elkin opened their first shop in November 2022, later expanding in December 2024 with a second location near the memorial at the site where Nazi officials planned the Holocaust’s “Final Solution.”

However, the second location closed last November, and now the original bakery has also shut down, bringing the venture to an end.

“We are just a bakery that wants to offer great products. But now we are only confronted with problems and politics that leave us in despair,” Elkin told the German newspaper Morgenpost.

“We really don’t know if Berlin is still the right place for us.”

Hotel in southern Germany booted from Booking.com after telling Israeli man who tried to book a room that Jews are not welcome.

A hotel in southern Germany was removed from Booking.com after Israeli travelers trying to reserve a room received a message saying Jews were not allowed at the property, according to Israeli diplomats stationed in Germany.

The message, sent in English through the booking platform, said: “Sorry, there are no Jews allowed in our hotel.”

The incident involved Hotel Zum Hirschen in Lam, a town in Bavaria near the Czech border. The family hotel advertises itself as a wellness and leisure property in the Bavarian Forest, with about 40 rooms and facilities for families, groups and travelers with dogs.

The Israeli guests filed a complaint with Booking.com and contacted Israel’s consulate general in Munich. Booking.com later removed the hotel from its platform, making it unavailable for reservations through the site.

Israel’s consul general in Munich, Talya Lador, condemned the message in a German-language post on X.

“Are we back in the 1930s?” she wrote, sharing a screenshot of the reply. “A hotel answered an Israeli as follows: ‘Sorry, there are no Jews allowed in our hotel.’ I am glad that Booking.com banned this hotel from its website.”

Ynet reported that the Israeli consulate contacted the relevant authorities and examined the case.

According to the report, the hotel initially denied sending the message but later acknowledged that one of its employees had done so.

The case was referred to the commissioner for combating antisemitism at Bavaria’s Justice Ministry to review whether legal action is warranted.

German news agency dpa reported that the hotel has since apologized in writing to the guest and offered the guest and family a free weeklong stay.

The hotel said it had been dealing with fake bookings and phishing attempts through a major booking platform and had wrongly assumed the Israeli request was fraudulent.

“It was definitely wrong of us to respond in this way in the chat,” the hotel wrote in an email cited by dpa.

The hotel said the comment was not directed at Jews but came “out of anger over the numerous fake bookings.” It added that the reply was “nevertheless unacceptable and must not happen in a professional business.”

Junior manager Andreas Vogl told dpa, “That is not our worldview at all.”

He said the hotel had received threats and death threats since the incident and that its removal from the booking platform was a major problem for the business.

The episode comes as Germany continues to confront elevated levels of antisemitism following the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack on Israel and the war in Gaza.

RIAS, Germany’s antisemitism monitoring network, reported 8,627 antisemitic incidents in Germany in 2024, nearly double the previous year’s total. In Berlin, RIAS documented 2,197 antisemitic incidents in 2025, a decline from the previous year but still more than double the level recorded before October 7.

It was not immediately clear whether German authorities would open formal proceedings against the hotel or any employee involved in sending the message.

Germany is facing persistently high levels of antisemitism, with new data from Berlin and Hesse underscoring a hostile environment for Jews and Israelis marked by sustained harassment, violence, and intimidation.

On Wednesday, Germany’s Federal Association of Departments for Research and Information on Antisemitism (RIAS) published its latest annual report documenting 2,197 antisemitic incidents recorded in Berlin last year.

While this marked a drop of about 13 percent from the 2,521 incidents recorded in 2024, the figure was still more than double the level before the Hamas-led invasion of and massacre across southern Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, when roughly 1,200 cases were reported.

Amid an increasingly hostile climate, Jews and Israelis have been reporting growing reluctance to wear visible Jewish symbols, express their identity publicly, or even speak Hebrew in everyday settings.

“Everyday situations such as riding the subway or taking a taxi, or visiting concerts and cafés, often suddenly and unexpectedly became threatening,” RIAS wrote in its 88-page annual report.

Among the recorded cases were widespread harassment and antisemitic abuse, including repeated insults and intimidation, as well as vandalism targeting Jewish-owned businesses and institutions, and damage to memorials and residential areas.

The newly released report also documented 40 violent antisemitic incidents, warning of an increasingly aggressive and dangerous pattern of attacks.

One of the most serious cases involved an attempted murder at the Holocaust Memorial, where a young man was stabbed in the neck.

Other incidents included victims being punched, shoved, spat on, having jewelry or clothing torn off, or being sprayed with pepper spray.

Berlin’s Jewish community also saw a surge in anti-Israel demonstrations last year, with 239 events marked by antisemitic slogans, inflammatory banners, rhetoric glorifying terrorism, denying Israel’s right to exist, and calls to “kill Jews.”

Sigmount Königsberg, antisemitism commissioner of Berlin’s Jewish community, warned that this growing trend of antisemitic violence has been increasingly downplayed or relativized, contributing to a climate in which victims feel less protected and less heard.

“Israel-related antisemitism is by far the most prevalent form of Jew-hatred we encounter,” Königsberg said, adding that “politics and society must ensure conditions in which all Jews feel safe.”

“Many in the community once believed Berlin was a safe place, but that has changed. I know of people who are now considering leaving the city, with life plans upended — especially young people who want to go,” he continued.

RIAS’s latest report also recorded a record-high total of 1,099 antisemitic incidents in the German state of Hesse, located in west-central Germany, in 2025.

With an average of three antisemitic incidents occurring each day, the report warned that the upward trend in Hesse continued to intensify.

This figure represented an increase of approximately 18 percent compared with the 926 incidents recorded in 2024 and was dramatically higher—nearly six times—than the 179 cases documented before the Oct. 7 atrocities.

Uwe Becker, the Hessian commissioner for antisemitism, warned of a deepening deterioration in the security situation for Jewish residents in the state.

“The threat to Jewish life is worse than at any time since the Holocaust,” Becker said in a statement.

According to RIAS’s latest report, those affected face a new level of intensity in antisemitic encounters, with 190 incidents recorded in educational settings such as schools and universities, alongside 84 cases on public transport and 52 in cultural and artistic venues.

“Antisemitic experiences carry far-reaching consequences, affecting not only individuals but also families and wider social circles. They shape everyday routines, future plans, and even decisions about whether it feels safe to take the S-Bahn in the evening,” the report stated.

Among the recorded cases were 27 physical assaults, 41 threats, 58 incidents of deliberate property damage, and 960 cases of offensive behavior.

RIAS project leader Susanne Urban warned that antisemitism has increasingly become normalized due to its consistently high frequency.

“Hesse has a problem. For Jews, full social participation is no longer possible,” she said in a statement.

Marc Grünbaum, chairman of the board of the Jewish community in Frankfurt, noted that antisemitism has increasingly gained ground as it is too often left unaddressed and met with insufficient public challenge.

Francesca Albanese, the United Nations’ special rapporteur on the human rights situation in the Palestinian territories, has published a bizarre social media post mixing antisemitic rhetoric with Holocaust revisionism, appearing to urge Germany to move beyond its historical guilt while casting Jews as arrogant and viewing themselves as morally superior to Europeans.

In a Facebook post published on Sunday, Albanese — who has an extensive history of using her role to denigrate Israel and seemingly rationalize the Palestinian terrorist group Hamas’s attacks against the Jewish state — called on Germans to absolve themselves of responsibility for the Nazi regime’s crimes and the historical burden of guilt tied to them.

The anti-Israel UN official argued that modern Germany’s efforts to come to terms with its past through strong support for the Jewish state do not reflect genuine remorse.

Instead, she claimed this stance reflects a “historical superiority syndrome” that has never been addressed and serves as a “convenient mask” for Germany’s return to the international community.

“The Western club accepted them because they proved themselves capable of tolerating certain members of the group that were previously ‘undesirable,’ and so they accepted the Jews, but not all of them,” Albanese wrote.

“They learned that to survive in this world they must be superior. No longer a fragile minority. No longer a people in exile. No longer the people of the book. But the chosen people. ‘Chosen to rule?’ One might wonder when looking at what Israel has become.”

She then went on to claim that Germany does not respect Jews unless they are Zionist and behaves like a “socially deranged” state that enacts discriminatory laws, while calling on its citizens to free themselves from what she described as an obligation to Israel.

“I know Germans can do better,” Albanese concluded. “I have seen them. But they are called upon emancipating themselves. This is their chance.”

This latest controversy is far from the first involving Albanese, who has a mandate from the UN to advise the international body on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

In her position, which she has held since 2022, Albanese has faced consistent criticism over a pattern of incendiary anti-Israel remarks, with officials accusing her of inciting violence and hatred.

Earlier this year, top diplomats from Austria, Germany, Italy, the Czech Republic, and France called for Albanese’s resignation after she delivered yet another inflammatory tirade against Israel.

During an Al Jazeera forum in Doha, Albanese described the state of Israel as “the common enemy of humanity” and accused the country of “planning and carrying out a genocide” during its defensive war against Hamas.

“It’s also true that never before has the global community seen the challenges that we all face, we who do not control large amounts of financial, algorithms, and weapons,” Albanese said at the time, appearing to invoke a long-standing antisemitic conspiracy that Jews control wealth and technology.

She also accused Western nations of being complicit in the so-called “genocide” by supplying arms and financing Israel, while claiming that Western media helps defend the Jewish state by “amplifying the pro-apartheid, genocidal narrative.”

Albanese has previously referred to a “Jewish lobby” controlling the US and Europe, compared Israel to Nazi Germany, and stated that Hamas’s violence against Israelis — including rape, murder, and kidnapping — needs to be “put in context.”

Despite her history of antisemitic statements, the UN has consistently refused to fire Albanese, citing her status as one of its “independent experts.”

Since taking on her UN role, Albanese has been at the center of controversy due to what critics, including US and European lawmakers, have described as antisemitic and anti-Israel public remarks.

Last year, the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) faced intense pressure to block Albanese’s reappointment for another three-year term, with several countries and NGOs urging UN members to oppose the move due to her controversial remarks and alleged pro-Hamas stance.

Despite significant pressure and opposition, her mandate was confirmed to extend until 2028.

Last year, the UN launched a probe into Albanese for allegedly accepting a trip to Australia funded by pro-Hamas organizations.

In the past, she has also celebrated the anti-Israel protesters rampaging across US college campuses during the 2023-2024 academic year, saying they represent a “revolution” and give her “hope.”

German courts ruled that anti-Israel activists could continue holding a multi-day “Bridges of Resistance” encampment at Hamburg’s Moorweide square, a site used during the Holocaust as a deportation point for thousands of Jews, Sinti, and Roma.

The decisions by the Hamburg Administrative Court on May 7 and the Higher Administrative Court on May 8 drew criticism from local officials and Jewish community leaders, who said the encampment was offensive to the memory of Holocaust victims.

Moorweide, located near Hamburg’s Dammtor train station, served as a gathering point for approximately 6,000 Jews, Sinti, and Roma before their deportation to concentration and extermination camps during the Nazi era. A memorial stone now marks the site.

The courts ruled that city authorities and police had not provided sufficient legal grounds to prohibit or relocate the encampment.

Organizers of the protest said the location was intentionally chosen to highlight what they described as historical “continuities,” including Germany’s support for Israel and arms exports passing through Hamburg.

German authorities are stepping up scrutiny of antisemitic slogans, extremist symbols, and online hate speech amid a deteriorating climate of hostility toward Jews and Israelis that officials warn is hardening into a deepening national crisis.

On Tuesday, Germany’s domestic intelligence agency, the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV), released new guidance aimed at raising awareness of antisemitism and extremist forms of so-called “Palestine solidarity,” with a particular focus on developments in Berlin.

According to the agency’s newly published report, a growing network of extremist activists has emerged within segments of the pro-Palestinian movement in the German capital, where anti-Israel demonstrations increasingly feature antisemitic slogans, hateful imagery, and incitements to violence.

German officials said these new resources are intended primarily for teachers, educators, and the general public, as part of broader efforts to strengthen democratic resilience and sharpen awareness of more subtle forms of antisemitism.

In a document entitled “Hidden Messages – Antisemitic Codes and Ciphers,” the agency defines antisemitism as “rejecting, hostile or violent attitudes towards Jews or towards people who are perceived as Jewish.”

Among the report’s key findings is that within secular pro-Palestinian extremism, criticism of Israel’s policies and actions is increasingly being generalized onto Jews as a whole, with anger over the Israeli-Palestinian conflict frequently mutating into antisemitic narratives.

Islamist and left-wing extremists are increasingly merging anti-imperialist ideology with entrenched antisemitic narratives in their propaganda around the Israel–Hamas war, including claims of a “genocide in Gaza,” depictions of the Jewish state as a “colonial power,” and labels such as “child murderer.”

Such antisemitic narratives have become a central mobilizing force since the Oct. 7 atrocities, shaping public discourse and being used to justify acts of violence and intimidation.

German authorities are facing mounting outrage from the country’s Jewish community after an anti-Israel protest encampment was allowed to remain for nine days at Hamburg’s Moorweide Square — the historic site from which thousands of Jews were deported by the Nazis to their deaths during the Holocaust.

On Friday, the Higher Administrative Court in the northern German city of Hamburg issued an expedited ruling overturning a previous police ban and allowing a anti-Israel demonstration camp, including tents and protest displays, to remain for more than a week at the historic site.

Local police had previously barred the anti-Israel protest camp from being established at Hamburg’s Moorweide memorial site, citing its deep historical significance as the Nazi-era gathering point from which thousands of the city’s Jewish residents were deported to concentration camps and systematically murdered by the Nazis.

Instead, protesters had been offered the option of relocating their encampment to Sternschanzenpark, a large public park located west of the city center.

However, the anti-Israel group successfully appealed the restriction before Hamburg’s administrative court.

According to the court’s ruling, the encampment falls under constitutionally protected freedom of assembly, with judges rejecting concerns that the demonstration could lead to criminal offenses.

“A broadly radical or extremist stance held by an organizer or protest leader is not, in itself, legally relevant to assessing potential risks unless it results in concrete actions during the demonstration that threaten protected legal interests,” the court stated in its ruling.

With more than 200 participants already on site and the encampment set to remain in place until May 16, police have established a substantial round-the-clock security presence, deploying multiple officers to monitor the area continuously.

Among the groups organizing the demonstration is Thawra Hamburg, which has been under surveillance by Germany’s State Office for the Protection of the Constitution since 2025 over alleged extremist activity and openly antisemitic rhetoric.

The anti-Israel group has been accused by German authorities of pursuing objectives hostile to the principle of international understanding, including publicly expressing support for or endorsing attacks carried out by Hamas and Hezbollah against Israel.

Philipp Stricharz, chairman of Hamburg’s Jewish community, condemned the court’s decision allowing the encampment to proceed, warning that extremist activists were being granted a public platform for antisemitism in the heart of the city.

“People who have even been officially classified as extremist are now being given space to spread antisemitism openly,” Stricharz said in a statement.

“Jews must finally be able to move freely and visibly throughout Hamburg without fear — and that is currently no longer the reality.”

The Israeli Embassy in Berlin also denounced the demonstration and accused organizers of promoting extremist rhetoric and glorifying terrorism.

“Those who call for the ‘killing of colonialists,’ glorify Hamas terror, and propagate ‘resistance by any means necessary’ are not defending human rights. This is not a peace movement. This is extremist hatred,” the embassy wrote in a post on X.

Local Jewish community leaders have now organized daily counterprotests against the encampment, scheduled to take place every evening at 5 p.m. through May 16.

Police have deployed a large number of riot officers to protect Jewish and pro-Israel demonstrators following repeated incidents in which activists at the encampment reportedly shouted chants including “child murderers” and “women murderers” at counter-protesters.

The Israeli Energy Ministry confirmed it has surplus production capacity that allows for the export.

Shipments will be coordinated directly with Israeli refineries, though the exact volume and schedule have not been publicly disclosed.

The decision is subject to the evolving security situation in the region.

Energy and Infrastructure Minister Eli Cohen and Foreign Minister Gideon Saar approved the move.

During his visit to Berlin on Tuesday, Saar personally informed German Minister of Economics and Energy Katherina Reiche of Israel’s willingness to help.

The Energy Ministry stated that a review found available surplus jet fuel for potential export, highlighting Israel’s ability to support allies during the current global energy strain.
