New York City incumbent mayor Zohran Mamdani is facing backlash for sharing a video that appears to mock Hanukkah traditions, featuring Indian men cosplaying as Jews.

The video, originally posted to Mamdani’s X account during Hanukkah last year, features performers in wigs and turbans dancing around a menorah, spinning dreidels, and playing Punjabi-style music.

The clip, created by the Geeta Brothers Duet Group, is part of a satirical holiday album produced by Sikh-Canadian comedian Jus Reign.

“Zohran Mamdani posts Indian men cosplaying Jews, spinning dreidels and lighting the menorah,” wrote advocacy group Stop Antisemitism on Saturday.

“Our holidays and traditions are sacred and not for your comedic pleasure – this is sick.”

The performance, titled “Hey Hanukkah,” was part of a 2015 parody project, which Mamdani shared publicly in a message wishing his constituents a happy third night of the holiday.

Controversy Around Holiday Posts

This is not the first time Mamdani has shared content from the group. On Christmas Eve 2024, he posted another parody from the same album – a Punjabi version of “Jingle Bells” – accompanied by a cheerful message to residents of Astoria and Long Island City, the Queens neighborhoods he represents in the New York State Assembly.

October 7 Messaging Sparks Further Anger

Tensions escalated further when several New Yorkers reported receiving pro-Mamdani text messages referencing the October 7 Hamas attacks in Israel.

“My friend Idan was murdered on October 7 at the Re’im music festival. The war is personal to me, as it is to many in our community,” one message read, adding: “Idan believed in peace, just like Zohran does.”

It remains unclear who sent the messages or whether Mamdani’s campaign authorized them, but the wording has drawn criticism for politicizing the tragedy and leveraging it for electoral gain.

Past Accusations and Identity Questions

Mamdani, 33, has faced criticism in the past for his refusal to affirm Israel’s right to exist as a Jewish state.

Born in Uganda to Indian parents, he has also drawn scrutiny for reportedly identifying as African American in his college application to Columbia University, a claim that resurfaced last week and raised eyebrows among Black voters in the city.

By Daniel Greenfield, Frontpage Magazine

Last week we had the big loud debate over what race Kamala Harris is. As I’ve said before, I don’t think she’s anything.

Her identity is as negotiable as anything else. And like Obama, it doesn’t fit the American identity politics calculus anyway.

Like a lot of Jamaican and Indian immigrants, she’s a member of a high-achieving minority group (who is admittedly a lot dumber than the average Indian and Jamaican immigrant) with some family ties, but little sense of belonging to anything beyond a social class.

Kamala’s cooking session with Mindy Kaling gets at how Indian she is which is as much as your average liberal Jew is Jewish.

They picked up some things growing up, mostly foods, a few words, and fond memories, but no real sense of identity, belief, or commitment.

Over in Bangladesh, a color revolution by Marxists and Islamists, cheered on by the media, has set out to demolish the country as an independent secular state.

Call it a smaller Arab Spring with no Arabs (except the ones remotely funding all this) and it has more than slight echoes of the massacres by Islamists (including some who fled to America and became political players) during the battle over Bangladeshi independence.

Like all Islamic movements, a primary goal is to massacre non-Muslims, in this case Hindus.

The media has mostly ignored or downplayed the attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh, much as it previously did the Muslim massacres of Chinese in Indonesia or of Christians in Nigeria.

The New York Times even justified them as “revenge” because the Muslim majority attacking a non-Muslim minority are still oppressed.

Kamala constantly comments on how awful Israel’s defense against Islamic terrorists is, but has nothing to say about the attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh.

Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi, who is Indian, offered a belated statement urging an end to the violence.

Rep. Hakeem Jeffries claimed, “I am deeply concerned and saddened by the violence, casualties and human rights abuses in Bangladesh over the past weeks and offer my condolences to the families of the victims, including within the Bangladeshi-American community that calls Brooklyn home. Recent developments and new leadership must bring with them respect for democratic principles and the rule of law and a commitment to investigating the attacks, calling for accountability for those responsible and demanding justice for the victims. Under the leadership of the Biden-Harris administration, the United States will continue to closely monitor the situation unfolding and we encourage all parties to refrain from further violence.”

And yet there’s been nothing from the ‘Harris’ part of the Biden-Harris administration.

Kamala, when it was convenient, pretended to be the “first Indian-American senator”.

Now when Hindus are facing violence, she couldn’t even be bothered to make a statement.

By Daniel Greenfield, Frontpage Magazine

The media is freaking out after former President Trump told black journalists about Kamala, “I’ve known her a long time indirectly — not directly very much — and she was always of Indian heritage and she was only promoting Indian heritage. I didn’t know she was black — until a number of years ago when she happened to turn black.” And now she wants to be known as black, so I don’t know is she Indian or is she black … but you know what, I respect either one, but she obviously doesn’t.”

Trump just told the world that KAMALA HARRIS ISN’T BLACK

Kamala and Obama were both ‘third culture’ children raised by non-black mothers and abandoned by their black fathers who grew up in third countries (Indonesia for Obama and Canada for Kamala) who had limited connections to any sense of blackness until they moved to America and began working on their careers.

Kamala at least attended Howard and had tried to socialize with other black people, Obama hardly did.

Both Kamala and Obama had mothers who were non-black radicals with a hankering for black nationalism.

Obama related to blackness mostly through the lens of politics. Kamala likely does too.

A core difference between the invention of Kamala and Obama’s blackness is that Obama launched his national career with a bestselling ‘memoir’ laying out a fictionalized version of his embrace of blackness.

Kamala has really not done so and probably couldn’t. She’s many things but an intellectual, even a fake one, isn’t one of them.

But another difference is that while Obama never formally identified as white (Muslim or Indonesian may be another matter), Kamala did identify as Indian. And still does. The pitch for her tends to go back and forth.

Trump isn’t wrong here, the media is once again uncomfortable with the question of a non-African American ‘black’ candidate whose roots are not American and do not come out of the slavery experience.

That’s also a sensitive issue for many African Americans. Most black Americans did eventually come to accept Obama as one of their own.

But he was a much better mimic while Kamala has a history of awkward and tone-deaf efforts to appear black.

Entire academic fields now revolve around blackness, as authentic, and of whiteness as a construct.

Talking about blackness as a construct can be dangerous especially since a significant portion of the leftist elite feigns membership in minority groups, e.g. Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders, and that its aspiring presidential candidates, Barack Obama and Kamala Harris, did not come out of the African American community, even when they did, like Cory Booker, it was after a period of code-switching in elite circles, followed by a reversion and an attempt to then reidentify as black.

Whatever one’s feelings about Kamala are, there’s little question that identifying as black was a decision for her and, unlike Obama, not a permanent one, but a situational one.

When it’s convenient, she’s black, when it’s convenient she’s Indian or even Asian, and when convenient she’s something more ambiguous.

It’s part of a pattern in which Kamala routinely disavows her own views, quotes, policies and past to be whatever empty vessel people want to see her as.

Obama was guilty of that at times, but at least you could understand where his position was at any given time, with Kamala not even that is really true anymore.
