By World Israel News Staff

Former President and 2024 Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump will attend and address the Israeli-American Council (IAC) National Summit in Washington, D.C. this month as a featured speaker, the IAC announced over the weekend.

President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, the 2024 Democratic presidential nominee, were also invited to speak but have not committed to making an appearance.

The IAC National Summit has become America’s largest pro-Israel conference, this year expecting to draw nearly 4,000 participants from the Jewish and Israeli community, including many students, who will honor the victims and heroes of Oct. 7 and mark nearly one year since the massacre.

Featured centrally will be Oct. 7-focused programs, including tributes to the heroes, survivors, and families of hostages; a salute to the Israel Defense Forces; a panel of experts on IDF combat ethics; and a special appearance by former hostages who were freed from the clutches of Hamas.

This year’s summit will also focus on Jewish identity, the fight against antisemitism, Israeli technology and innovation, the U.S.-Israel alliance, and other aspects of the Jewish and Israeli-American experience.

Speakers and panelists at the conference will include decision-makers and thought leaders from the arenas of government, business, activism, education, journalism, philanthropy, and technology.

The list of confirmed speakers includes Douglas Murray, journalist, bestselling author, and renowned Israel advocate; Andrei Kozlov, who was held hostage by Hamas and freed in a daring IDF rescue; Reza Pahlavi, the Crown Prince of Iran; U.S. Special Envoy to Monitor and Combat Antisemitism Ambassador Deborah Lipstadt; House Republican Conference Chair Representative Elise Stefanik (R-NY); Representative Ritchie Torres (D-NY); and Israel’s Ambassador to the United States Michael Herzog.

In addition, the speakers’ list includes philanthropist Dr. Miriam Adelson; Oracle CEO Safra Catz; jurist Alan Dershowitz; Israeli Happiness Studies Academy cofounder Prof. Tal Ben-Shahar; singer and social media influencer Montana Tucker; influencer, actress and author Noa Tishby; U.S. Olympic gold medal-winning wrestler Amit Elor; Israeli Olympic bronze medal-winning gymnast Peter Paltchik; Australian actor Nathaniel Buzolic; actor and comedian Michael Rapaport; actor Barton Gellman; and Harvard University graduate student and activist Shabbos Kestenbaum.

“Over the last year, Israel and the Jewish people have been at war on the battlefield, on college campuses, in the media, and on social networks,” said IAC CEO Elan Carr, the former U.S. Special Envoy to Monitor and Combat Antisemitism.

“This year’s Summit provides a critical opportunity for our community to unite with focus and purpose. Together we will embrace the families of the fallen and those taken hostage, salute the IDF heroes who defend Israel day and night, support the students standing up for Israel on campus, and recognize those fighting for Israel’s global standing.”

“Most importantly, as we approach the first anniversary of the horrific massacre of Oct. 7, we will unite as one people, in one voice, to declare: Am Yisrael Chai!”

By Dmitriy Shapiro, JNS

For a few days this weekend, a high-rise beachfront resort became what many guests described as “little Tel Aviv” as thousands of Israeli Americans, Israelis and American Jews attended the Israeli-American Council’s (IAC) 2021 National Summit.

For many of the 3,000 attendees, the conference is an annual destination where they reconnect with other Israelis living in the United States. Walking through the halls of the Diplomat Hotel in Hollywood, Fla., Hebrew took over as the majority language in a part of the state known for its significant Jewish population.

Those gathered came for a weekend of music, culture and political discussions on issues from foreign policy and Diaspora relations to the growing concern of global anti-Semitism.

IAC’s summit, like most such conventions in 2020, had to be canceled last year because of the coronavirus pandemic.

This year, the decision was made to go ahead with the conference with precautions in place, including mandatory rapid COVID-19 tests for all those entering the conference center attached to the hotel for the first time. Staff handed out surgical masks to anyone without one.

“The IAC is very important because we have a lot of Israelis right now in America, and it’s a bridge; it tries to make a bridge between the Israelis and the Jewish community, and also America in general,” said Nathalie Miller of Austin.

This was her second conference (the first being before coronavirus), and she noticed the differences.

The communal Shabbat dinner, for example, previously was completely indoors. This year, it was moved to the sprawling poolside terrace facing the beach.

Except for Thursday, which began with private receptions for donors and members before the first plenary session began that evening, days began with breakout sessions covering a diverse range of topics and concluded with plenary sessions that featured the major speakers. A few of the breakout sessions were conducted in Hebrew.

There were interviews with high-ranking Israeli military officials about Israeli defense; scholars and activists grappling over anti-Semitism; and journalists speaking about current affairs.

Miller said she would have liked to see more about the Hebrew language. During her previous experience, for instance, there were more Israeli writers.

This year, the Israeli culture was represented by musicians during most plenary sessions, including Israeli rock-pop star Rami Kleinstein on Friday, a surprise performance by Gad Elbaz during Saturday’s plenary session and topped off by the highlight performance of the Idan Raichel Project on Saturday night.

The plenary sessions—massive productions filled with colored lights in a large conference hall—fit the theme of the conference: “Israel. Together.”

“I enjoy the revitalization that comes from being with a bunch of people who support Israel,” said Galit Lev-Harir, an IAC activist who moved to Israel in 1987 from St. Louis, only to be returned to the city through her company, Amdocs, in 1998. “A lot of times when we’re in our communities and not able to reach out to others, we think, ‘Why do we do this work? Why do we keep putting on all of these pro-Israel events and nobody appreciates it, and it’s a lot of work and we’re all volunteers and not getting paid for doing all of this?’ And then we come to a conference like this, and we realize how important it is to support Israel and to be a bridge between the American Jewish community and Israel, and to show people why we love Israel and why this work is important.”

Many noticed the active effort to keep partisanship out of the conference, inviting Israeli and American politicians to speak from both sides of the aisle.

Politicians such as Labor Party Knesset member Nachman Shai, Israel’s Minister of Diaspora Affairs, and the Likud Party MK Mir Barkat, were both interviewed on stage during Thursday’s plenary, telling the audience of their importance to Israel and Defense Minister Benny Gantz keynoted Friday’s plenary. All expressed their belief in the importance of strengthening relationships with the Jewish Diaspora in the United States and elsewhere.

‘A message of who we are’

But as much as coronavirus could be pushed out of view for a few days, its effects were still felt. Many noted that some of the production was toned down and the speakers, especially American politicians, were not as prominent as in previous years.

Former U.S. President Donald Trump addressed the group in 2019, and former U.S. Vice President Mike Pence spoke the year before.

This year, pro-Israel progressive Rep. Ritchie Torres (D-N.Y.) was the highest-ranking American politician. He was interviewed during the Saturday plenary session by IAC board chairman Naty Saidoff. The audience enthusiastically received Torres, with Saidoff noting his popularity among the attendees. He was given a standing ovation at the end of the interview.

Attendance was also down from previous years, which usually drew as many as 5,000 people.

Still, few complained. Nearly all were happy to be there after a difficult nearly two years of isolation due to the ongoing pandemic, coupled with a recent conflict with Hamas in Gaza and the bout of anti-Israel sentiment that followed in the United States and abroad.

Surrounded by high-rise resorts and a beckoning beach, many noted that the location could have been Tel Aviv, rather than South Florida.

IAC co-founder and CEO Shoham Nicolet pointed to the multigenerational nature of the conference with entire families in attendance.

Teens, college students and young professionals had their own events during the summit, which focused more on entrepreneurship, networking and how to represent Israel in the hostile anti-Israel environments they find themselves in their schools or among peers.

Amit Kleinberger, who is on IAC’s Los Angeles Council, said that for him, the theme of the summit was unity.

“[It’s] a wonderful connection to our origins, to our roots,” he said, bonding “communities around the country and bringing a great message of who we are. This conference is really just about bringing home and further enhancing this bond that all of us Israelis living in America have together. Israelis are Israelis, whether they live in Israel or outside.”

By JNS.org

The Israeli-American Council (IAC) flew a banner over Ben & Jerry’s factory and global headquarters in South Burlington, Vt., reading “Serve Ice Cream, Not Hate,” the social-media hashtag #BDSisHATE, and the American and Israeli flags as part of a campaign the IAC launched today demanding Ben & Jerry’s stop their boycott of part of the Israeli population.

The flyover on July 23 kicked off a global advocacy effort that features an online campaign urging people to call on Ben & Jerry’s and its parent company, Unilever, not to align with the BDS hate movement targeting Israel, and to renew the ice-cream maker’s license with its Israeli manufacturer.

On July 19, the longtime ice-cream maker announced that it would end sales in what it called “occupied Palestinian territory,” a move that created an immediate backlash in Jewish communities worldwide.

The IAC stated: “Ben & Jerry’s decision to stop selling its ice-cream to certain Israeli populations is a disgraceful surrender to the BDS hate movement, which promotes a culture of fear and violence and seeks to eliminate the Jewish homeland—the only democracy in the Middle East.”

“Unilever should rid itself of this discriminatory and morally wrong act, stand by its corporate values and refocus its Ben & Jerry’s brand on serving ice-cream and not hate. We urge Unilever to discard this shameful decision, end this boycott and invest instead in peace and prosperity through dialogue.”
