The IDF investigation into its failure to protect Moshav Yekhini and its environs praised individual soldiers, police officers and civilians for preventing many more deaths than occurred there during the Hamas invasion of October 7, 2023, in a report released on Wednesday.

Eight Hamas terrorists arrived in a pick-up truck at the unprotected, but locked front gate of the moshav hard on the heels of a man and two women who had fled by car from the Nova dance festival and entered a bomb shelter right next to the gate when they couldn’t get in.

They executed the man, Ilan Avraham, after he refused to cooperate with them by talking to people in the moshav.

The two women ran out of the shelter and tried hiding behind their car, but the terrorists caught them and started to carry them away.

A Border Police commander, Eran Kalimi, who had rushed from his home about three kilometers away to reach the town of Sderot with several men after hearing that terrorists had in vaded, arrived on the scene during the abduction.

His small force of four engaged the terrorists in a gun battle, saving the women, as the terrorists ran into the moshav through an open pedestrian gate.

The policemen entered the moshav through a different gate and were told by a resident that no one in the moshav was armed.

One of the biggest failures noted in the report was that the Yekhini’s emergency squad had no serious weapons, just personal guns, because the IDF had decided to collect their rifles five years earlier, despite the moshav security officer’s protests.

They had also not received training to deal with infiltrations, and only two of the 13 squad members tried to engage the terrorists.

An IDF major who lived in Yekhini was killed trying to defend his home by firing at the terrorists with his personal weapon.

The terrorists murdered three other residents, one dying of his wounds because he was not treated in time.

Kalimi was shot twice and and a Maglan unit officer who joined them was also wounded.

At 7:49, the report said, a unit from the elite Sayeret Matkal unit entered the fray after realizing that a battle was taking place in Yekhini.

By 8:04, barely a half hour after arriving, five of the terrorists escaped through the fields and set up an ambush on the nearby Route 34, where they proceeded to murder a total of eight civilians, including three foreign workers, and one Maglan officer who rushed to engage them.

Three of the terrorists were killed eventually by a police commander as they were fleeing a Border Police unit on the road, and two were caught by the police as they tried to make their way to the neaarby town of Netivot.

The three terrorists remaining in Yekhini hid in an olive grove for two and half more hours.

Border Policewoman, Sgt. Ravit Hanna Assayag, was shot and killed when she entered a structure one of the terrorists had hidden in.

In all, four soldiers and Border Police officers were killed either in or around Yekhini before all the terrorists were eliminated.

Moshav resident Zechariah Hajbi said the terrorists had precise intelligence on Yekhini, as they had headed for the house that belonged to the security chief, who happened to be in Thailand on vacation.

Hajbi said they murdered his grandson because “they thought he was the head of security.”

Moshav committee head, Shalom Yifrach, charged that while the report professionally delineated what had happened, “we didn’t hear what in practical terms is being done to prevent the next massacre.”

The army, he said, “brought more vests, equipment and weapons, but the bottom line is that the they need to train the emergency squad, assess the moshav’s needs – and connect us to the [defense] systems in the area. We heard less about that.”

A counter-terror raid carried out on Sunday by Border Police unearthed nearly 100,000 shekels in cash, numerous guns and ammunition, and an explosives laboratory.

Hassan Raba’a, a resident of Meithalun, a PA-controlled town in Samaria, began shooting at officers as they attempted to arrest him on terror charges.

During the firefight, the man was shot dead. A search of his body found that he was carrying two handguns.

After a subsequent search of his home, Border Police officers seized a shotgun, pipe bombs, ammunition, and 96,000 shekels in cash ($26,000).

A warehouse on the man’s property, which was being used for manufacturing explosives, was destroyed by security forces.

Also on Sunday, during a routine inspection at the entrance to Nablus (Shechem), troops stopped a vehicle which was found to be carrying 20 pistols and cartridges.

The driver was arrested and taken for questioning.

Last week, in a joint operation between the Shin Bet, Border Police, and IDF, security forces carried out an undercover operation to arrest a wanted terrorist.

Dressed in civilian clothes, security forces detained the man at a cafe in Nablus.

After the suspect was arrested, violent clashes broke out between locals and security forces.

Some threw firebombs, rocks, and other projectiles at the troops as they withdrew from the city.

Security forces responded by shooting several of the rioters and neutralizing the threat, according to a report from Hebrew-language outlet Mako.

According to analysts, Iran has been stepping up it attempts to smuggle weapons to Palestinian terrorists in Judea and Samaria in recent months.

“Iran is using its bases in Syria and the Captagon [amphetamine]-running networks to bring in weapons into Jordan and from there to Samaria — the ‘River’ Jordan is a creek,” Col. (res.) Eran Lerman, vice president of the Jerusalem Institute for Strategy and Security (JISS), told JNS.

“They are also using Muslim Brotherhood infrastructures in Jordan to mobilize terrorists.”

An Israeli Border Police officer died of injuries during an overnight counter-terror raid in the Jenin refugee camp, the police announced on Sunday morning.

Nineteen year-old Shay Germay was in a vehicle that was damaged by an improvised explosive device. She and three other Border Police officers injured in the blast were taken to Haifa’s Rambam Hospital. Doctors were unable to save Germay. The other three Border Police officers were in serious, moderate and light condition respectively.

Germay was from the northern city of Karmiel.

During the raid, an aerial drone eliminated six Palestinian terrorists throwing explosives at the Israeli forces.

Since October 7, approximately 2,600 terror suspects have been arrested in Judea and Samaria, of whom approximately 1,300 are affiliated with Hamas.

Six IDF soldiers have been wounded in terrorist attacks in Judea and Samaria in the last two days.

On Saturday, one soldier was seriously wounded in a car-ramming attack near al-Fawwar refugee camp south of Hebron.

Reserve soldiers who noticed the terrorist immediately neutralized him.

In a statement, an IDF spokesman said, “A car-ramming terror attack took place a short while ago at a military position near the al-Fawar refugee camp operated by the Judea and Samaria Division.”

He added, “IDF reservists neutralized the terrorist. Security forces are being deployed to bolster operation in the area.”

The wounded soldier was taken to Soroka Hospital for treatment.

This follows a car ramming attack on Friday close to Adorayim Junction that seriously injured one soldier with four other soldiers sustaining light to moderate injuries.

The terrorist responsible for the attack was neutralized and identified as Amr Abd al-Fattah Abu Hussein by the Palestinian Authority Health Ministry.

Last week, one woman sustained moderate to severe injuries and a man suffered minor injuries in a stabbing attack at Mazmuria checkpoint near Har Homa in southern Jerusalem.

The terrorist approached the two victims and stabbed them as they were standing at the checkpoint.

One of the wounded victims shot and killed the terrorist at the scene.

The victims have been identified as a Border Police officer and a civilian security guard.

MDA medics and paramedics provided the wounded with emergency treatment and evacuated them to Shaare Zedek Hospital in Jerusalem.

An emergency medic from MDA’s motorcycle unit, Yosef Haim Israeli, reported what he saw.

“When we arrived at the scene, we saw the two stabbing victims. The young woman was sitting and the young man was walking around, both with stab wounds to their bodies.”

He added, “We gave them initial medical treatment, which included stopping the bleeding, bandages and administering medication, and evacuated them to hospital in stable condition.”

On October 6, 2023, Neta David set out with two girlfriends to the widely-publicized Supernova music festival, never dreaming that the weekend rave would transform into a deadly massacre that would claim the lives of 1,400 Israelis — including her two best friends.

Neta’s story is one of hundreds of soldiers and thousands of Israelis who escaped the October 7th massacre by the skin of their teeth. Although she courageously returned the very next day to her duties commanding a unit in the Border Police, the 21 year-old’s story doesn’t end here. Shock and grief are just setting in, and it will take her a long time to process what occurred and rehabilitate emotionally.

Yet she knows that her situation is infinitely better than others.

The first rockets were fired just before dawn, arcing through the sky over thousands of revelers who had been dancing through the night at a trance music festival. Many party-goers didn’t even hear them because of the thumping music, but at some point, there was an announcement of a red alert. Neta and her friends, Raz Mizrahi and Kim Dokarker, ran off to a bomb shelter, unaware that terrorists had infiltrated the grounds.

Raz refused to leave the shelter, but Neta, suffering claustrophobia, went outside for fresh air where she eventually begged a ride from a passing vehicle.

“Suddenly, I looked behind us, and less than 150 meters away, was a van filled with Hamas terrorists who sprayed us with bullets,” Neta recalled.

“The windows exploded. Glass rained down on me, and Sharon, the driver, took a bullet in the arm. He could barely drive but I screamed at him to floor the accelerator. The car was destroyed, but he drove like a madman away from the barrage of gunfire until the car spluttered and died. We all dove out of the car and sprinted in a zigzag, fleeing a hailstorm of bullets until we found cover,” Neta said.

“Sharon was bleeding profusely from his arm, and Roi, who was also the car with us, was injured in his leg and head. I broke branches from the tree and ripped off Sharon’s shirt to create a tourniquet and stop the blood,” she added.

“All along, we were desperately sending our location to anyone who could help, but emergency responders kept replying that that they couldn’t reach us due to the heavy fighting. Several times we heard the terrorists approaching, shouting in Arabic, searching for gun fodder. I recited ‘Shema Yisrael,’ sure that my life was over.”

At some point, Neta spied four Border Police officers, and she joined them, grabbing a gun from one of them and covering for them while they spirited close to a dozen Israelis to safety.

Several hours later, she learned that terrorists tossed two grenades into the bomb shelter she’d fled, killing Raz, Kim, and 40 others huddled inside.

At least 260 people were killed at the music festival. The terrorists took others captive back to Gaza as hostages.

Reaching out to support Neta and hundreds of soldiers injured in the Hamas attacks on southern Israel is Belev Echad. The New York-based non-profit is dedicated to supporting Israeli soldiers wounded in action, providing respite, rehabilitation, and emotional support to soldiers grappling with the psychological aftermath of warfare and trauma, and easing their transition back into mainstream society.

“We meet wounded soldiers in the hospital, visit them and offer them physical, emotional and financial support,” said Rabbi Uriel Vigler, who cofounded Belev Echad with his wife Shevy.

“Now, with the war, we’re working on many fronts simultaneously, both in Israel and the United States, fundraising, sending care packages to soldiers and reservists, and sponsoring therapies.”

Due to immense hospital overflow in Israel, Belev Echad House in Kiryat Ono, where the organization’s regular programs take place, has been converted into a rehabilitation center for wounded soldiers,” he said.

In a tragic twist of fate, Raz was one of Belev Echad’s success stories. She had been hospitalized for weeks after a 2021 Palestinian car-ramming attack in eastern Jerusalem. That was followed by months of rehabilitation, and Belev Echad was with Raz every step of the way.

“There are so many soldiers who were exposed to the worst imaginable sights in the Gaza border communities, gruesome scenes of death and destruction, and they need intensive emotional support to overcome the trauma. Many others need help dealing with the grief and loss of loved ones—parents, siblings, and close friends,” said Sharon Shtrachman, Belev Echad’s program director in Israel.

Said Neta, “Raz and Kim are in a better place now. But I have friends who were seriously wounded. Two are in critical condition. One lost an eye, another a leg—and that’s what the medical world terms ‘lightly wounded.’ Life will never be the same again for any of us.”

Netflix has acquired the broadcast rights to an eight-episode Israeli series focused on the country’s Border Police starring Israeli singer Shlomi Shabat and comedian and actor Shalom Michaelshvili.

The show’s title in Hebrew is Mishmar Hagvul, which translates in English to “Border Guard” or “Border Patrol.”

The series was created by Meni Yaish and will air around the world on Netflix later this year.

Germany’s largest television channel, ZDF, has also purchased rights for show, and it will premiere with German subtitles on its streaming platform ZDFneo, according to Israeli media reports.

The show centers on Avi — played by actor Ben Sultan — who is a boy from Bat Yam that gets involved with Arabs from Jaffa and must then join the Israeli Border Police to settle a debt with them.

He soon afterward becomes a respected policeman and eventually falls in love with a female Border Police officer.

However, Avi’s past keeps interfering with his present life.

Mishmar Hagvul premiered Tuesday on the Israeli television network HOT.

Terror groups in Judea and Samaria have been using more powerful reverse-engineered Iranian improvised explosive devices.

Israeli authorities arrested three men — including two Arab Israelis — accused of smuggling guns and explosive devices for the Palestinian Islamic Jihad terror group, in early August, the Israel Security Agency (Shin Bet) announced on Tuesday. The information was cleared for publication as prosecutors filed indictments in Nazareth District Court.

The Israeli nationals were identified as Samer Knoh and Osama Haruf, both residents of the Tulkarm area. The third suspect, also from the Tulkarm area, was not identified.

The Shin Bet said the three were arrested on August 3 while smuggling weapons across the Jordanian border. They were caught with guns and ammunition. Investigators discovered the two Israelis had been recruited by Palestinian Islamic Jihad operatives based in the Jenin refugee camp.

Further investigation revealed that Knoh and Haruf had transferred weapons and money to terror operatives in the Nur Shams refugee camp, near Tulkarm. The suspects also told interrogators details about terror attacks being planned in the Nur Shams camp.

Terror groups in Judea and Samaria have been using more powerful reverse-engineered Iranian improvised explosive devices (IEDs). At the end of August, four Israeli soldiers were wounded by an IED during an operation in Shechem (Nablus) escorting Jewish worshipers to Joseph’s Tomb.

In recent weeks, Israeli forces intercepted two attempts to smuggle in Iranian explosives.

In the first instance, four Arab Israeli citizens were caught in Lod with Claymore mine-type explosives directly linked to Hezbollah. In the second case, just three days later, two large explosives were seized during an attempt to smuggle them from Jordan into Israel.

The Israel Security Agency (Shin Bet) revealed on Thursday that the security forces last month arrested four Arab Israelis on suspicion of smuggling Iranian-made explosives from Lebanon into Israel.

The suspects were named as Galal Harsa, 28, Ahmed Issa, 30, and Muhammad Issa, 39, from the central Israeli city of Kafr Qasim, located 12 miles east of Tel Aviv. During a raid in Lod, 9.5 miles southeast of Tel Aviv, officers apprehended the fourth suspect, identified as Noah Easem, 30.

Hezbollah has been working to recruit and operate a complex “smuggling infrastructure” in Israel, the Shin Bet revealed.

The men were allegedly part of a criminal ring and smuggled the Iranian explosive devices into the country on behalf of Hezbollah, Tehran’s Lebanese terror proxy. According to the indictment, one of the men had plans to use the bomb for a criminal plot.

Hezbollah is said to have recruited the four suspects to operate an elaborate smuggling network in the Jewish state, which was also used to distribute illegal drugs to criminal groups.

Hezbollah’s involvement in the drug industry involves the production of illicit drugs in factories in the southern Beirut suburb of Dahieh, Lebanon’s eastern Baalbek region and Aleppo in Syria.

“This affair once again illustrates the efforts of terrorist elements from Hezbollah and Iran to exploit the Arab citizens of Israel for security activities against the state. The investigation also revealed that there’s a thin line between security and criminal activities,” a senior Shin Bet official said in a statement.

Earlier this week, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed to “eliminate crime in the Arab sector” amid ongoing violence in the minority population. On Tuesday, an Israeli Arab mayoral candidate was gunned down along with three others in the Western Galilee town of Abu Snan.

At a meeting chaired by Netanyahu the next day, it was decided that the Shin Bet “will assist the Israel Police in its operations against the criminal organizations in regard to the local elections, as per its responsibilities, according to law.”

“Every citizen of Israel must feel secure and not under the shadow of the threat of internal terrorism,” Netanyahu said.

Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant have also charged Iran with orchestrating the most recent surge in Palestinian terrorism, which saw three Israelis killed and one seriously wounded in just under 72 hours.

Ali Akbar Velayati, a senior adviser to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, spoke with Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, Islamic Jihad Secretary General Ziad al-Nakhala and Sheikh Naim Qassem, second in command of Hezbollah, in a series of phone calls in recent weeks, according to Iranian media reports.

“We are very pleased with your recent victories, and hope for these victories to continue,” Velayati told Haniyeh. “Whatever effort the Zionist regime puts into preserving itself is met with defeat, and it will eventually be faced with more challenges and frustrations.”

Sgt. Maj. Avishag Shiran Malka is one of a kind – the only haredi female Border Police fighter in Israel.

The 38-year-old mother of two young sons who study in the ultra-Orthodox school system, which generally discourages its pupils from doing military service, admitted in a Channel 14 interview that her lifestyle and career are at times difficult to synthesize.

“Sometimes the Sabbaths and holidays clash terribly,” she told Tal Meir on the “Three” show. “Like when you’re preparing for Passover [the night before] and suddenly some operation or other begins and you have to focus on the work. It’s to navigate between the drops, as it were.”

A 17-year veteran of the force, Malka grew up secular but in her mid-20s started attending Torah classes, leading her to gradually adopt a more religious way of life. She thought of quitting, she said, after she got married, as her husband had difficulty reconciling certain Orthodox restrictions, such as having a man and a woman alone together, with the realities of her job.

Since security work does not pause on the Jewish holidays, she had to do her share of duty then as well, which also did not sit well with him, especially when she was called in on Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the Jewish year. This has happened “several times,” she said in the interview, but she answered the call and did what needed to be done “while fasting,” she noted, in order to keep one of the day’s major prohibitions even if she could not spend the day in synagogue.

Malka has received critical support from her rabbi, to whom she defers for all questions of Jewish law, such as “how to keep the Sabbath while violating it,” which she said was a particularly difficult part of the job. But when she asked for direction, she said, “each time he said I should stay a combat soldier.”

The long skirt and head-covering that Orthodox women wear have not gotten in her way during typical Border Police missions, where in general she has acted as a driver but has also joined her colleagues in action, she told Channel 14.

“If we have to do a search and breach walls… it makes it more difficult in some ways,” she acknowledged, “but I never gave up. If I had to jump over a wall in a skirt, then I jumped…. I do everything I can and everything necessary, and if there are limitations where I can’t, then I say so. But for the most part, I’m like any fighter.”

When asked by the interviewer if she would tell any daughter she might have to follow in her footsteps, Malka conceded that as a general rule, Jewish law would oppose the move, but that “everyone should do what is good for him or her – of course after asking a rabbi.”

“I’m very proud to serve in the Border Police, and I recommend that other ultra-Orthodox women enlist,” she told Ynet in a separate interview. “It’s possible to combine an ultra-Orthodox lifestyle with operations and challenging work.”

Today, the report said, Malka serves in a mostly female unit that regularly patrols Afula to provide a sense of security to the residents and a rapid response in case of any terrorist attack.

Recent days have seen several security-related incidents along the Israel-Jordan border, as seven people illegally crossed into the country, sparking an hours-long manhunt, and security forces busted an “unusual” weapons smuggling attempt.

During the early hours of Monday morning, seven people infiltrated into Israel via the Jordanian border, triggering alarms that summoned IDF soldiers to the scene.

Initially, five of the group were captured, with two managing to escape from soldiers.

After intensive searches in the area, including emergency alerts informing residents of nearby communities to lock their doors and windows, it was determined that the two men had run back into Jordanian territory.

None of the men detained by soldiers were armed, and authorities believe that they crossed into Israel in search of work. The five men are expected to be returned to Jordan later on Monday.

Following the partial lifting of a gag order on the incident, the IDF said that it had thwarted an “unusual” weapons smuggling attempt last week that also occurred along the Israel-Jordan border.

While details about the incident remain scant, Hebrew-language media reported that the Shin Bet security agency is collaborating with the IDF regarding the matter.

The Matilan Border Police counterterrorism unit and another IDF unit were involved in busting the ring, which saw weapons presumably for use by Palestinian terrorists seized near the border.

Details regarding the number and type of weapons were not revealed to the media.

Israel and Jordan share a 482-kilometer (300 miles) long border, which stretches from the northern Golan Heights to the southern resort city of Eilat.

Weapons smuggling from Jordan has plagued Israeli authorities for years, as large swathes of the border are unfenced and unguarded.

In May 2022, Jordanian MP Imad al-Adwan was arrested at the Allenby Border Crossing after attempting to illicitly smuggle guns and gold from Jordan.

Although Israel and Jordan signed a peace agreement in 1994, lawmakers from the Hashemite Kingdom have repeatedly made inflammatory statements regarding the Jewish state. Visibly Jewish visitors to Jordan – or even those simply transiting through the country’s airport – have repeatedly suffered antisemitic harassment and humiliation from Jordanian officials.

Numerous recent terror attacks were perpetrated by Palestinians who illegally crossed into Israel.

Almost 200 Palestinians who illegally infiltrated into Israel without work permits were arrested in a large-scale raid conducted by the Border Police, the authorities announced on Wednesday.

As part of a massive effort to round up illegal residents, Border Police forces and reservists arrested 174 men in the cities of Lod and Ramla who did not have permission to work or live in Israel.

After being detained, nearly all of the men were transported back to Palestinian Authority-administered areas in Judea and Samaria, Kipa reported.

One of the arrested men, a resident of the Gaza Strip in his 20s, was discovered to be in possession of an assault rifle. He was transferred to the Shin Bet security agency for questioning.

The sweep comes on the heels of a spike in terror attacks that began in 2022, many of which were carried out by Palestinians who were illegally residing in Israel or regularly crossed the border illicitly in order to work.

Earlier in July, a Palestinian affiliated with Hamas infiltrated into Israel, stole a truck and rammed his vehicle into a crowd of people waiting at a Tel Aviv bus stop.

After crashing the truck, he exited the vehicle and stabbed several passersby. Nine people were hurt in the attack. A pregnant woman who was seriously wounded in the attack later suffered a miscarriage.

The terrorist, who was from a town near Jenin and had no authorization to be in Israel, was shot dead by an armed civilian.

Israel’s security barrier, which separates Jewish communities in central Israel from PA enclaves, has been notoriously porous for years.
