Democratic strategist James Carville says his party must confront “loudmouth” antisemites on the left, warns against tolerating hatred.

Veteran Democratic strategist James Carville called on party leaders to confront antisemitic voices on the left, warning that “loudmouth” anti-Israel activists could hurt Democrats at the ballot box if voters come to see the party as tolerant of antisemitism. He said the loudest voices in the debate are overwhelming the party’s broader mainstream.

Carville made the comments during an appearance on Jim Acosta’s podcast, where he argued that antisemitism had become a serious political and moral problem for Democrats, even as he insisted most antisemites are not party members.

“This antisemitic stuff, it’s sickening man! It’s a real problem,” Carville said. “It’s not a made-up problem. It’s a real, real, real definitely problem, and it’s getting worse.”

Carville said Democrats were being blamed for some of the rhetoric that emerged from campus protests against President Joe Biden and the Gaza war, including demonstrations at Columbia University. He argued many of those activists were not Democrats, even if they were perceived as part of the party’s left flank.

“That’s when it would drive me crazy, when they were protesting Joe Biden at Columbia, and we thought they were saying, ‘Hey, hey, ho ho, genocide Joe must go,’” Carville said. “And the Democrats were getting blamed for that. A lot of these people are not Democrats. Understand that.”

Asked by Acosta whether the issue could cost Democrats a Senate seat, Carville said it could have broader consequences.

“It could cost anything, but I don’t want to be part of a political party that tolerates hatred, or sometimes encourages it,” he said. “I don’t think that’s where majority Democrats are, to be fair, but certainly not where majority Democratic officeholders are. But these loudmouths are getting heard above everybody else, and this is not a good idea. This is a terrible idea.”

Carville also drew a line between criticism of Israel’s government and hostility toward Israel or Jews.

“Attack the government of Israel all you want to,” he said. “I don’t like it. I can’t stand it. But I like the state of Israel. You can’t conflate the regime with the people.”

His comments come as Democrats continue to wrestle with a widening internal split over Israel, the Palestinians and the war in Gaza.

Public opinion polling has shown a sharp shift among Democratic voters, with Gallup reporting in February that 65% of Democrats sympathized more with Palestinians and 17% with Israelis, while Americans overall were, for the first time in Gallup’s trend, more likely to sympathize with Palestinians than Israelis.

The debate has also coincided with rising concern over antisemitism in the US. The Anti-Defamation League said antisemitic incidents fell in 2025 from the previous year’s record high, but still reached the third-highest total since the group began tracking them in 1979. The group also said antisemitic assaults reached a record level, with 203 violent incidents and three Jewish fatalities.

Federal hate-crime data has added to those concerns. The ADL said FBI statistics for 2024 showed 1,938 single-bias anti-Jewish hate-crime incidents, the highest number recorded by the bureau since it began collecting the data in 1991. Anti-Jewish incidents accounted for nearly 70% of religion-based hate crimes, the group said.

The issue has already produced visible political fallout. Pennsylvania Supreme Court Justice David Wecht said this month that he was leaving the Democratic Party and registering as an independent, citing what he described as growing tolerance of antisemitism within the party.

Reuters reported that Wecht, who is Jewish, said antisemitism had long existed on the right but had become increasingly accepted on the left.

Carville, who helped lead Bill Clinton’s 1992 presidential campaign, has repeatedly urged Democrats to avoid being defined by activist rhetoric that he says alienates voters. In the interview with Acosta, he said he supported future reconciliation between Israelis and Palestinians but warned that antisemitism should not be minimized as part of that debate.
