President Donald Trump’s latest foreign policy maneuver has sent shockwaves through Europe and NATO allies, as he linked his ongoing push for control over Greenland to a perceived snub over the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize.

In a sharply worded letter to Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, Trump tied his frustration over the Nobel Peace Prize directly to his foreign policy posture, writing: “Considering your Country decided not to give me the Nobel Peace Prize for having stopped 8 Wars PLUS, I no longer feel an obligation to think purely of Peace.”

“Although it will always be predominant,” he continued, Trump said he can now think about “what is good and proper for the United States of America.”

The letter, confirmed as authentic by Norway’s government, tied these sentiments to Trump’s push for the United States to assert control over Greenland, a vast Arctic island that is an autonomous part of the Kingdom of Denmark.

Trump questioned Copenhagen’s ability to defend the territory against global powers, writing that “Denmark cannot protect that land from Russia or China” and casting doubt on historical claims to the island. He added, “The World is not secure unless we have Complete and Total Control of Greenland.”

Trump’s comments came amid mounting tensions over the Arctic territory’s strategic importance and his broader push to expand U.S. influence there.

European capitals have balked at his rhetoric, with Danish and Greenlandic officials insisting that decisions about the island’s future belong to its people and to the Kingdom of Denmark.

Earlier this month, Greenland’s government declared that it “cannot under any circumstances accept” U.S. demands, emphasizing that “Greenland is part of the Kingdom of Denmark” and rejecting the notion that it could be sold or transferred.

The Nobel Peace Prize context adds a personal twist to what is already a complex geopolitical dispute.

The 2025 prize was awarded to Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado, who later symbolically presented her medal to Trump in appreciation for U.S. support in Venezuela. The Nobel Foundation clarified that the award cannot be transferred, shared, or re-awarded.

Trump’s message has also been accompanied by concrete pressure tactics. On Saturday, he announced punitive 10% tariffs on imports from several European countries, including Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, and the Netherlands.

The tariff rate is set to rise to 25% by June unless a deal for the “Complete and Total purchase of Greenland” is reached. European officials have condemned the move as coercive and damaging to transatlantic relations.

The ripple effects of Trump’s rhetoric have been felt in alliance capitals. Norway’s prime minister reiterated that the Nobel Peace Prize is awarded by an independent committee and not by the Norwegian government, pushing back against Trump’s framing of the issue.

Denmark’s leaders have held firm in defense of Greenland’s sovereignty, with Danish and Greenlandic premiers jointly rejecting U.S. acquisition efforts and underscoring Greenland’s choice to remain part of the Danish realm.
