President Donald Trump has announced that he has fired Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem and will appoint U.S. Senator Markwayne Mullin of Oklahoma as the new head of the Department of Homeland Security.

In a social media post, President Trump said that Noem will instead transition to a new role as Special Envoy for The Shield of the Americas.

Noem was confirmed as DHS Secretary on January 25, 2025, after leaving in the middle of her second term as Governor of South Dakota.

Earlier today, Noem delivered a keynote address in Nashville, Tennessee, where she spoke about the importance of cooperation between DHS and local law enforcement.

She was not asked any questions about her departure during the appearance.

In recent weeks Noem also appeared before both the House and Senate Judiciary Committees in Washington, where lawmakers questioned her about her tenure leading the Department of Homeland Security, particularly her leadership of Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

In a post on X, Noem thanked Trump for her new role and praised DHS’ “historic accomplishments.”

During testimony before the House on March 4, lawmakers offered sharply different assessments of her record.

Republican Congressman Jim Jordan of Ohio pointed to arrest and deportation numbers and described Noem’s performance at DHS as “amazing.”

Democratic Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal of Washington said Noem should resign, be impeached, or be fired.

Former MMA fighter Senator Markwayne Mullin is now expected to take over leadership of DHS as the administration reshapes key national security roles.

Senator Fetterman has already expressed his support for him.

Kristi Noem, the U.S. secretary of homeland security, shared “unwavering support for the prime minister and the State of Israel” during a meeting on Sunday evening with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at his Jerusalem office, per an Israeli readout.

“She also expressed great appreciation for the prime minister’s policy of building a fence along the Egyptian border and for his conduct of the war,” Netanyahu’s office stated.

The prime minister’s military secretary, foreign policy adviser and spokesman attended the meeting, as did Mike Huckabee, the U.S. ambassador to Israel, per Netanyahu’s office.

The prime minister’s office also stated that he met with Sen. Jacky Rosen (D-Nev.) earlier in the day. (JNS sought comment from Rosen’s office and from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.)

Israeli Minister Gideon Sa’ar also met with Noem on Monday, thanking her for her visit to Israel following the murders of Yaron Lischinsky and Sarah Lynn Milgrim, two Israeli embassy staffers, a a Jewish museum in Washington, D.C. He emphasized the visit as a sign of solidarity and the strong bond between the U.S. and Israel.

U.S. President Donald Trump “and his administration show great commitment to fighting terrorism and antisemitism,” Sa’ar said, adding: To our enemies I say today once again: Israel will never surrender to terrorism!”

Rosen on Sunday also discussed with Sa’ar the terrorist attack in Washington, D.C. “I thanked the Senator for her longstanding support for Israel,” Sa’ar said.

Huckabee stated that Noem would become the first U.S. cabinet secretary to take part in participate in an official Yom Yerushalayim, or Jerusalem Day, celebration.

“On this Jerusalem Day, as thousands of Israeli soldiers are away from their families, courageously fighting terrorists in Gaza and 58 hostages are still being held captive in the dungeons of Gaza, I want the people of Israel to know to know,” Huckabee stated, “America stands with you.”

“Your fight is our fight. Your enemies are our enemies,” the U.S. envoy wrote. “Israel’s victory is our victory, and together we will prevail and we will pray for the peace of Jerusalem.”

David Friedman, the former U.S. ambassador to Israel, thanked Noem for her “solidarity visit to the State of Israel in the aftermath of this week’s terrible terror attack in D.C. and for participating, along with Janet and Amb. Mike Huckabee, in a prayer at the Western Wall for a return of the hostages.”

The US federal government announced on Wednesday that it intends to start screening social-media posts for Jew-hatred from those who apply to immigrate to the United States.

“There is no room in the United States for the rest of the world’s terrorist sympathizers, and we are under no obligation to admit them or let them stay here,” stated Tricia McLaughlin, Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs at the US Department of Homeland Security.

Some 15 people, clad in red shirts, black masks and black pants unfurled a Nazi flag on the steps of the South Dakota capitol building in Pierre on Saturday, the Argus Leader reported.

Kristi Noem, the governor of South Dakota, noted that the Nazis sought to rally at the capitol without a permit shortly after “we just celebrated the 80th commemoration of D-Day, when the take-back of Europe from Freedom-hating Nazis began.”

The Nazi ralliers “were escorted away by Highway Patrol officers,” the Republican governor said. “Nazis are not welcome here in South Dakota.”

“We stand on the shoulders of generations of Americans who have fought for the freedom of all—here and abroad,” she added. “We stand for life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. We reject all hatred and Nazis. Full stop.”

“This is disgusting. This racist behavior has no place in South Dakota or anywhere,” added Sen. Mike Rounds (R-S.D.).

South Dakota’s state Senate passed on Thursday a bill requiring law enforcement agencies to refer to the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition of antisemitism when investigating anti-Jewish hate crimes.

South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem (R) already adopted the definition, which has been embraced by lawmakers across the political spectrum, via executive order in 2021. This latest measure, HB 1076, aims to further integrate the IHRA’s guidance into law and includes the organization’s examples of antisemitism. It now awaits a vote by the state House of Representatives.

“As antisemitism continues to rise across America, having a clear and standardized definition enables a more unified stance against this hatred,” the Combat Antisemitism Movement (CAM), said in a statement. “We appreciate Governor Kristi Noem for making this legislation a policy goal of hers, strengthening the use of the IHRA Working Definition in South Dakota through legislation, following the December 2021 adoption via executive proclamation.”

CAM called on lawmakers in the lower house to follow the Senate’s lead and implored “other states to join the fight against antisemitism by adopting the IHRA definition, ensuring the safety and well-being of their Jewish residents.”

First adopted in 2005 by the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition of antisemitism states that “antisemitism is a certain perception of Jews, which may be expressed as hatred toward Jews,” and includes a list of illustrative examples ranging from Holocaust denial to the rejection of the Jewish people’s right to self-determination.

The definition is used by hundreds of governing institutions, including the US State Department, the European Union, and the United Nations.

Widely regarded as the world’s leading definition of antisemitism, it was adopted by 97 governmental and nonprofit organizations in 2023, according to a report Combat Antisemitism Movement (CAM) Antisemitism Research Center issued in January.

Earlier this month, Georgia became the latest US state to pass legislation applying IHRA’s guidance to state law. 33 US States have as well, including Virginia, Texas, New York, and Florida.
