Vegan eatery that bans Israelis claims to be an “anti-racist safe space.”

A vegan restaurant in Madrid posted a sign stating that “Zionists” are not welcome and officially declared itself a “anti-Zionist zone,” in a move evocative of Nazi-era policies that banned Jews from businesses in Germany.

On its website, La Oveja Negra Vegana declares itself to be a “safe space created for all people who have been marginalized and oppressed,” and that they work to create an atmosphere “based on mutual support, solidarity and respect.”

But apparently, the welcoming environment for ethnic minorities and other groups who have suffered historical oppression does not include Israelis, Jews, or those who believe that the Jewish state has a right to exist.

“A vegan friend who ate at the restaurant last week told me about the sign, so yesterday we went there to find out what the story was,” Ben Yahav-Nevat, an Israeli expat who has lived in Spain for nearly a decade, told Hebrew-language media outlet Ynet.

“I went in and asked why they hung that sign there, and an employee came and started yelling at us. I told them I was a proud Zionist and told them it was a racist, antisemitic sign and that they should remove it.”

Yahav-Nevat said in response, the restaurant’s staff “shouted at us and accused us of murdering children.”

On Instagram, La Oveja Negra Vegana doubled-down on their anti-Israel stance, posting a story which explicitly stated that people “who don’t recognize what is happening in Palestine as genocide” should “not enter our doors.”

The story urged Spain to end trade and diplomatic relations with Israel, along with the phrase “Long live the struggle of the Palestinian people!”

Users on social media platform X reacted to a photo of the restaurant’s anti-Israel signs, noting the similarities between the restaurant declaring itself a “Zionist-free zone” and Holocaust-era businesses banning Jews from entry.

“This is giving 1930s vibes,” wrote one user in response to the photo.

Madrid offered to replace Barcelona as Tel Aviv’s twin city.

The Spanish government on Friday slammed the decision by Barcelona Mayor Ada Colau to suspend the Spanish city’s ties with Israel, AFP reported.

Barcelona and Tel Aviv are twin cities.

Earlier this month, Colau informed Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of the boycott before making the announcement on social media.

“At the request of more than 100 entities and thousands of Barcelona neighbors, I have just communicated to Netanyahu that we suspend institutional relations with the State of Israel due to the repeated violations of human rights of the Palestinian population and non-compliance with United Nations resolutions,” she stated.

Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares criticized Coalu’s action, calling it a “unilateral decision, and I understand an almost personal decision, by the mayor, AFP reported.

“I believe that Barcelona’s vocation is to be an open city, as Spain is. I do not believe that anything good is achieved by suspending, cutting, expelling, nor is a dialogue built between Israel and Palestine,” he said, according to the AFP report.

Meanwhile, Madrid Mayor José Luís Martínez-Almeida, in a letter to Tel Aviv Mayor Ron Hudai as well as at a press conference, offered his city as an alternative to Barcelona.

Twinning with Tel Aviv, he said, would be a “great opportunity to show Madrid’s commitment to strengthening relations with a democratic and a law-abiding state like Israel.”

Barcelona’s city council voted this week against Colau’s decision and rejected the idea of untwining the cities, however, the council has no veto power.

Under Spain’s Health Ministry guidelines, coronavirus dead must be left “as is” until they can be retrieved by the properly equipped funeral staff.

An investigation has been launched in Madrid after army personnel, charged with helping to disinfect retirement homes, found many elderly residents abandoned and sometimes dead in their beds, Agence France-Presse reported Tuesday.

“The army, during certain visits, found some old people completely abandoned, sometimes even dead in their beds,” Defense Minister Margarita Robles told Spain’s Telecinco news agency on Tuesday.

Robles promised that the government will be “strict and inflexible” with the way elderly people are to be treated.

Health Minister Salvador Illa said retirement homes are an “absolute priority” and the ministry will make sure they receive “intensive monitoring.”

On Monday, 14 public city cemeteries stopped accepting bodies of coronavirus victims because the funeral staff was running short of protective gear.

As a solution, a Madrid ice-skating rink was being used as a makeshift morgue given the rapid increase in coronavirus-related deaths.

Security forces guarded the outside of Madrid’s Palacio de Hielo ice rink complex on Tuesday as funeral service vans arrived and entered the building’s underground car park, AP reported.

“This is a temporary and exceptional measure which aims to mitigate the pain of the family members of the victims and the situation hospitals in Madrid are facing,” the regional government said in a statement quoted by AFP.

Normally there would be no need to bury corpses right away because they could be put in cold storage to be preserved. However, Spanish Health Ministry guidelines stipulate coronavirus victims cannot be put in cold storage and must be left “as is” until they can be retrieved by the funeral staff with protective gear, the BBC reported.

According to Spain’s Ministry of Health, as of Tuesday 39,673 Spaniards have been diagnosed with the deadly disease and 2,696 have died as a result of it.

In the city of Madrid alone there have been 1,535 fatalities.

Madrid’s deputy mayor held an event in solidarity with Palestinian prisoners with blood on their hands. 

Mauricio Valiente, deputy mayor of Spain’s capital city of Madrid, hosted an event Monday in solidarity with Palestinian terrorists held in Israeli prisons, The Libertad Daily reported on Tuesday.

The event, “International Day of Palestinian Prisoners,” was held at the city’s main municipal space in the Retiro district in southeastern Madrid. Valiente was the first of four speakers to address the event, which included Mus’ab Muhammad Nimr Bashir, who had previously admitted to planning, together with the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, the assassination of an Israeli official while working for Doctors Without Borders in 2007.

The Jewish community of Madrid conveyed its displeasure with a senior city official sponsoring the event, writing that it “views with alarm and consternation” the use of public resources in support of “prisoners, many of whom are imprisoned and convicted in a viable and consolidated democracy of bloody acts of terrorism,” according to the Jewish Telgraphic Agency.

“The support of the municipality of all the people of Madrid and the use of its space in support of people and organizations who promote the boycott,” the community wrote in its statement, is tantamount to “supporting hatred and the destruction of the only Jewish country in the world and its inhabitants.”

Sponsorship of anti-Israel events and motions is not new occurrence in Spain. In 2016, the city council of Santiago passed a motion in support of boycotting Israel.
