By David Swindle, The Algemeiner

US federal prosecutors in Maryland have convicted 29-year-old Brandon Russell, co-founder of the neo-Nazi group Atomwaffen Division, for planning to strike the state’s power grid in hopes of sparking a racial war.

On Monday, after an hour of deliberation, a jury found Russell guilty of one count of conspiracy to damage an energy facility, the Associated Press reported.

He had developed the plan to use a sniper rifle to shoot at electrical substations around Baltimore with his girlfriend Sarah Beth Clendaniel, 36, who a judge sentenced on Sept. 25, 2024 to 18 years in prison and a lifetime of supervised release after her acceptance of a plea deal.

Russell faces as much as 20 years imprisonment; his defense attorney Ian Goldstein said they plan to file an appeal and that his client’s conviction was a result of “a setup from the very beginning.”

Prosecutors said that had Russell’s plot succeeded, the damage could have topped $75 million.

In 2017, Russell pleaded guilty to possessing an unregistered destructive device and unlawful storage of explosive material. The following year, while incarcerated, he and fellow inmate Clendaniel began a correspondence which led to a romantic relationship following their releases.

Former US Attorney General Merrick Garland said at the time of Clendaniel’s sentencing that “those who seek to attack our country’s critical infrastructure will face the full force of the US Department of Justice.”

He added that Clendaniel “sought to ‘completely destroy’ the city of Baltimore by targeting five power substations as a means of furthering her violent white supremacist ideology.”

Russell and Clendaniel embraced the neo-Nazi “accelerationist” ideology, which advocates for violence in order to provoke societal collapse.

The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) described the word as “a term white supremacists have assigned to their desire to hasten the collapse of society as we know it. The term is widely used by those on the fringes of the movement, who employ it openly and enthusiastically on mainstream platforms, as well as in the shadows of private, encrypted chat rooms. We have also recently seen tragic instances of its manifestation in the real world.”

The antisemitism watchdog group also explained that Atomwaffen Division is “one of several new neo-Nazi groups whose rise paralleled the post-2015 growth of the alt right segment of the white supremacist movement. Atomwaffen distinguishes itself by its extreme rhetoric, influenced by the writings of a neo-Nazi of an earlier generation, James Mason, who admired Charles Manson and supported the idea of lone wolf violence.”

By Dion J. Pierre, The Algemeiner

Swastikas and antisemitic messages were graffitied on the grounds of several schools in Montgomery County, Maryland, local news outlets reported on Tuesday.

Police were called on Monday morning to four different schools — Thomas S. Wootton High School, Winston Churchill High School, Fallsmead Elementary School, Strathmore Elementary School — that were targeted, with the perpetrators aiming some of their invective at Israel.

Antisemitism is not new to Montgomery County, which is home to over 100,000 members of the Jewish community. Last week, a sign reading “We Support Israel” outside a synagogue in Bethesda, Maryland was graffitied with antisemitic messages.

The incident at the synagogue came just two days after similar antisemitic graffiti was found near Bethesda Elementary School. “Israel rapes men, women, and children” was spray-painted on a school sign, and “Free Gaza” was reportedly painted onto a nearby crosswalk and sidewalk.

A similar incident occurred in 2022, when “Jews not welcome” was graffitied on a sign outside of Walt Whitman High School in Bethesda.

Following the wave of incidents, local residents came together to organize a community effort to remove the graffiti. Some of it was cleaned by children, according to photographs shared by local outlet WTOP.

“We are committed to maintaining a safe, inclusive environment where all students, staff, and caregivers feel safe, valued, seen, heard, and have a sense of belonging,” Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) said in a statement shared by a local CBS affiliate.

“We firmly denounce divisive actions that perpetuate hate, inequality, and injustice against any person, family, or community. We must unite to recognize and embrace our differences and not let them divide us.”

Guila Franklin Siegel, chief operating officer of the Jewish Community Relations Council of Greater Washington, added in a statement, “We thank MCPS and [the Montgomery County Police Department] officials for their quick response to these damaging incidents — and for ensuring that security and law enforcement patrols are being stepped up as necessary. We are confident that people of goodwill across all backgrounds and faiths will see these acts for what they are: hateful words designed to tear our communities apart rather than bring them together.”

Elsewhere in Maryland, antisemitism on the streets of Baltimore has distressed the Jewish community there, according to numerous reports by local outlets and the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), which has documented incidents of vandalism, harassment, and assault.

In June, Baltimore’s mayor and police chief denounced a slew of antisemitic incidents in which the homes of Jewish families in the Glen section of the city were graffitied with swastikas.

As many as 10 homes were targeted in the spree of hate, according to a local NBC affiliate, shocking locals who were dismayed that the incidents occurred in their neighborhood.

Baltimore law enforcement officials, who decried similar incidents that struck the city in recent months, opened a hate crime investigation to find and bring the perpetrators to justice.

In December, vandals twice slashed a pro-Israel sign displayed on the lawn of the Baltimore Hebrew Congregation in Pikesville, local media reported.

In a later incident in March, a gang of teenagers mugged and assaulted two Jewish men who were walking into their synagogue.

The youths reportedly chased one of the men and stole a “large amount of cash” from the other. More recently, an Israeli flag was ripped and stolen from the porch of a doctor’s office earlier this summer.

Across the state of Maryland, which had the seventh most antisemitic incidents in the US in 2023, outrages targeting the Jewish community increased 211 percent compared to the prior year, according to the ADL’s latest data.

Virginia, a neighboring state, saw a 223 percent increase in 2023, a problem lawmakers have sought to address by applying the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition of antisemitism to hate crime investigations.

By World Israel News Staff

A black supremacist activist addressed a hearing of the Maryland state legislature Wednesday, castigating black lawmakers who were considering voting in favor of a Holocaust education bill.

Ayo Kimathi, 50, who has used the moniker “The Irritated Genie,” drew national attention in 2013 while he was working for the the Department of Homeland Security’s immigration customs enforcement office (ICE).

After it was revealed that Kimathi had voiced racist, antisemitic, and homophobic rhetoric, he was fired by DHS in December 2013.

He has since advocated for the extermination of Jews worldwide and suggested a “temporarily racial unification” between black and white supremacists to carry out the genocide of Jews.

During a hearing of the Maryland General Assembly’s Ways and Means Committee Wednesday on a Holocaust education bill under consideration, Kimathi addressed lawmakers, denying the Holocaust and calling black lawmakers who might support the bill “treasonous.”

He want on to decry the “real Holocaust” of African Americans.

After his two-minute address, Dalya Attar, a Democrat who represents Maryland’s 41st District, blasted Kimathi’s comments, saying they proved the need for Holocaust education.

In 2023, Kimathi published a book entitled Jews Are the Problem, and appeared on white supremacist programs to promote his ideas.

By Batya Jerenberg, World Israel News

Maryland Attorney General Anthony Brown reinstated Wednesday a pro-Hamas member of his anti-hate board, saying he had not had the legal right to suspend her two weeks ago.

“Upon further review, it was determined that the law establishing the Commission directs the Attorney General to appoint members to a 4-year fixed term but does not provide the Attorney General the authority to remove a Commissioner before the expiration of their term nor the authority to suspend a Commissioner during their term of service,” Brown wrote in a statement explaining his actions.

Legislation has to be specifically enacted to give him the power to do so, he added. Brown wrote that instead, prior to the Commission’s upcoming meeting next week, his office would “distribute draft operating guidelines to members which include personal communications and how to balance the members’ right to freedom of speech and their roles as Commissioners for their review and feedback.”

Brown had brought Zainab Chaudry, the executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations’ (CAIR) Maryland office, on board the state’s recently established Commission on Hate Crimes Response and Prevention.

After the October 7 Hamas invasion of Israel in which the terrorists slaughtered 1,200 men, women and children, Chaudry had written several posts to social media in which she denied the atrocities for which Israel has provided evidence, and slammed Israel for its military response.

Among them, she had claimed that pictures of dozens of babies in Gaza envelope communities that the terrorists had murdered were “fake,” said that the Israelis were acting like Nazis by taking the war to Hamas to destroy its ability to threaten the country ever again, and reposted a quote lauding “Palestinian martyrs.”

The AG had suspended her after deciding that the personal posts were “disruptive to the work and mission of the Commission.”

Following the suspension, several Republican state lawmakers wrote a letter to Brown calling for her expulsion.

Chaudry, they wrote, has the right to express her “disgusting and dangerous” opinion, but as Baltimore Country representative Kathy Szeliga stated in the missive, “fomenting hate during the war going on in the Middle East is contrary to the mission of the commission and should be grounds for immediate dismissal.”

Upon the news of the recall of the suspension, State Sen. Justin Ready wrote in a post to X that in light of CAIR’s past support for Hamas, it shouldn’t even have a delegate on an anti-hate commission, but if it does, he asked why Brown could not ask for a different representative to serve instead.

The national CAIR office had composed an online petition calling for its Chaudry’s return that received over 5,500 signatures. In it, they called her “an important leader of the Maryland Muslim community” and charged that the attorney general was supporting a “dishonest smear campaign” pushed by Fox News and “other bigoted voices.”

The organization welcomed the decision to reinstate her to the commission.

By Batya Jerenberg, World Israel News

Maryland’s attorney general suspended a member of his own anti-hate task force after her vociferously anti-Israel online comments were revealed, including denials that Hamas killed Israeli infants during its October 7 invasion of Gaza envelope communities.

“The Office of Attorney General learned last week about personal social media posts of a member of the Maryland Commission on Hate Crimes Response and Prevention, Zainab Chaudry, Executive Director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations [CAIR] – Maryland Office,” Anthony Brown said in a press release.

Chaudry has been “temporarily suspended,” he said, due to the fact that “personal postings that could be reasonably perceived as hate speech may disrupt the ability of the Commission to accomplish its important work.”

The task force, Brown pointed out, had been established just this year in order “to help rid our state of unlawful and hateful activities,” and “this critical mission requires Commission members to work collaboratively and with mutual respect.”

Chaudry had in essence dismissed the Hamas massacre of 1,200 people, which included burning families alive and beheading infants – much of which was documented from the terrorists’ own cell phones, Go Pro cameras and security cameras stationed in the kibbutzim and towns they had overrun.

On October 26, Chaudry posted to Facebook, “I will never be able to understand how the world summoned up rage for 40 fake Israeli babies while completely turning a blind eye to 3,000 real Palestinian babies.”

Hamas has never offered any evidence to back up its claim that such a large number of Gazan children have been killed in Israel’s ongoing airstrikes on the coastal enclave. Chaudry has also not acknowledged that Hamas uses civilians as human shields, as proven by the IDF and acknowledged by the White House.

In other posts, Chaudry also compared Israel to Nazi Germany, praised “Palestinian martyrs,” and suggested that Israel’s mere existence caused the war.

When reached for comment, Chaudry told Fox News Digital that the Israeli government wanted to commit genocide against the Palestinians. She then offered a general condemnation of the killing of all civilians in the war.

CAIR is a Muslim civil rights and advocacy group, many of whose officials have engaged in antisemitic rhetoric and anti-Israel activities over the years. In a 2007 trial of the Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development for illegally funding Hamas, as it is on the list of U.S.-designated terrorist organizations, the evidence linked CAIR leaders to Hamas, and the organization was named as an unindicted co-conspirator in the case.

Despite this, U.S. President Joe Biden included the group in his much-touted national strategy to counter antisemitism that he revealed earlier this year. It was a move that raised many eyebrows both among members of Congress and Jewish groups.

A senior Hamas official had said early on in Operation Iron Swords that the group would seek the release of CAIR founder Ghassan Elashi, sentenced to 65 years in prison for his role in the Foundation, in exchange for hostages with American citizenship.

By Batya Jerenberg, World Israel News

A Maryland principal sparked outrage after sending out a letter Tuesday to parents of one third-grade class instructing them to have their children wear KN-95 masks for ten days after a few children came down with the newest variant of Covid-19.

Rosemary Hills Elementary School head Rebecca Irwin Kennedy informed them that the rule, effective for school staff as well, was being enforced because “3 or more individuals have tested positive for Covid-19 in the last 10 days.” At-home rapid tests would be sent to their homes as well, she wrote, and parents should be on the lookout for symptoms that she listed, all in an effort to “ensure staff and students remain healthy for in-person learning.”

Mask-wearing would return to being optional after the ten-day period was over, she added.

Founder of the Outkick sports news website, Clay Travis, went viral after posting the letter to X (formerly Twitter) and saying, “They’re coming with masks for your kids again. Get ready. Read this insanity.”

In a matter of hours, 3.2 million people had viewed his post. One of those who retweeted the news was Donald Trump Jr., the son of former U.S. president Donald Trump, who posted simply, “DO NOT COMPLY!!!”

Media reports have noted unnamed experts saying that while there has been a recent surge in Covid cases due to new mutations of the virus, it is not nearly enough to warrant such a move. While the last two weeks have been the first to see a week-on-week rise in hospitalizations due to Covid since December, according to the American government’s Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the number of admitted patients stands at 8,000 in comparison to 44,000 per week even earlier this year.

At the height of the pandemic, there were 150,000 hospital admissions in the U.S. each week.

As she mentioned in the letter, Kennedy’s instructions followed CDC guidelines. The CDC currently recommends that besides testing themselves and monitoring for symptoms, people who have been exposed to someone with Covid-19 should wear “a high-quality mask when indoors around others (including inside your home) for 10 days.”

In addition, those who test positive for SARS-CoV-2 should isolate at home for at least five days, starting from when symptoms appear.

The KN-95 mask is thicker and has been touted by the CDC as being more of a protection against droplets of infectious viruses in the air than a simple surgical mask or one made of cloth.

The mask mandate was highly controversial even during the height of the pandemic, in 2020-2021, with many arguing that it did not prevent the spread of the deadly virus. Dr. Anthony Fauci, who was the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases from 1984 to 2022 and was the leading government voice about what to do during the pandemic, had at first said that masks were not necessary, and then did an about-face on the issue.

Adding fuel to the current backlash is a much-publicized quote from a Cochrane review of pandemic-era health care policy and research released last month that seemed to indicate that Fauci’s original stance – against mask mandates – was the correct one.

“Wearing masks in the community probably makes little or no difference to the outcome of laboratory-confirmed influenza/SARS-CoV-2 compared to not wearing masks,” the review concluded after examining the results of multiple studies.

However, after many media and politicians jumped to say that it proved that masks don’t work, Fauci dismissed the study and Cochrane itself clarified that the meta-analysis authors had also said that the results of their study were inconclusive. Reasons for doubt included “the high risk of bias in the trials,” and “relatively low adherence with the interventions during the studies,” meaning that there was nowhere near 100% compliance in wearing masks in the testing groups.

By David Hellerman, World Israel News

A watch that was said to have belonged to Adolf Hitler sold for $1.1 million in a controversial Maryland auction this week.

The engraved gold watch — presented to Adolf Hitler as a sign of gratitude from Nazi party members — was purchased by an anonymous buyer. According to auction house, the watch was taken as loot by a French soldier from Berchtesgaden, Hitler’s retreat in the Bavarian Alps.

The Huber watch, made of gold featured a swastika, a German imperial eagle and Hitler’s initials.

Jewish groups had called on the Alexander Auction House of Chesapeake City, Maryland, not to follow through with a two-day auction of personal items belonging to Hitler and his mistress, Eva Braun on July 28-29

Other items sold during the July 28-29 auction included a golden eagle from Hitler’s bedroom, Hitler’s personal stationary, a candy dish, a dog collar used by one of Miss Braun’s dogs, and a beer-serving tray.

The European Jewish Association denounced the sale in a letter co-signed by 34 members and leaders of European Jewish communities.

Rabbi Menachem Margolin, chairman of the the Brussel-based advocacy organization said Hitler’s personal items only give “succor to those who idealize what the Nazi party stood for” and provide “buyers the chance to titillate a guest or loved one with an item belonging to a genocidal murderer and his supporters.”

“The sale of these items is an abhorrence. There is little to no intrinsic historical value to the vast bulk of the lots on display,” Margolin stressed.

But in a letter to the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, Bill Panagopulos, the president of Alexander Historical Auctions, rejected the criticism as “nonsense and sensationalism.”

“What we sell is criminal evidence, no matter how insignificant. It is tangible, real in-your-face proof that Hitler and Nazis lived, and also persecuted and killed tens of millions of people. To destroy or in any way impede the display or protection of this material is a crime against history,” Panagopulos wrote.

The purchasers, he added, “are NOT neo-Nazis, who are too poor and too stupid to appreciate any kind of historic material.”

By World Israel News Staff

European rabbis and comunity leaders called on a prominent auction house in Maryland to cancel the sale of Nazi memorabilia, but to no avail.

Items up for sale, among others, at Alexander Historical Auctions on July 28-29 include a golden eagle from Hitler’s bedroom, Nazi toilet paper, a concentration camp “crusher” visor cap, and an engraved gold watch presented to Adolf Hitler as a sign of gratitude from Nazi party members — currently valued at 2 million dollars.

Rabbi Menachem Margolin, chairman and founder of the European Jewish Association, signed a letter urging the auction house to call off the sale. It was co-signed by Binyomin Jacobs, Chief Rabbi of the Netherlands; Rev. Cornelis Kant, executive director of Christians for Israel International; and Andrew Cohen, President of the Federation of Synagogues in the United Kingdom, The Jerusalem Post reported.

Alexander Historical Auctions is known for its sales of high-value, high-profile pieces, including Frank Sinatra’s performance stool and the Rolex wristwatch gifted to President John Kennedy by Marilyn Monroe, the Post noted.

But some of the items sold at the prominent auction house were used for the persecution of Jews. The personal diaries of Josef Mengele were sold by the same auctioneer, according to the Jewish Telegraphic Agency.

“That they [items] are sold to the highest bidder, on the open market is an indictment to our society, one in which the memory, suffering and pain of others is overridden for financial gain,” Margolin said.

The purpose of the auction is “giving succor to those who idealize what the Nazi party stood for” or “offering buyers the chance to titillate a guest or loved one with an item belonging to a genocidal murderer and his supporters,” the letter states.

“Indeed, one can only question the motivation of those buying them [the items],” Margolin wrote.

Bill Panagopulos, president of Alexander Historical Auctions, dismissed the criticism as “nonsense and sensationalism” in an email to the JTA.

“What we sell is criminal evidence, no matter how insignificant. It is tangible, real in-your-face proof that Hitler and Nazis lived, and also persecuted and killed tens of millions of people,” Panagopulos said.

“To destroy or in any way impede the display or protection of this material is a crime against history,” he added. They “are NOT neo-Nazis, who are too poor and too stupid to appreciate any kind of historic material.”

“The sale of these items is an abhorrence. There is little to no intrinsic historical value to the vast bulk of the lots on display,” Margolin stated in his letter.

By David Hellerman, World Israel News

In a closely watched Maryland Democratic primary race for Congress, progressive candidate Donna Edwards was defeated by a former state attorney who received significant financial backing from the American Israel Public Affairs Committee and its super PAC, the United Democracy Project.

AIPAC and other pro-Israel groups spent nearly $7 million supporting Glenn Ivey in Maryland’s heavily Democratic 4th congressional district, an unprecedented amount for the organization.

Ivey defeated Brown by 16 percent.

Edwards previously represented that district from 2008 to 2017, then gave up her seat in an unsuccessful bid for a Senate seat. The district was most recently represented by Rep. Anthony Brown, who vacated the seat to run for Maryland Attorney General.

While Edwards and Ivey agreed on many domestic policy issues, they differed sharply on support for Israel.

Edwards’ record on Israel during her first Congressional stint concerned AIPAC.

In 2009, she voted “present” rather than support a near-unanimous House resolution endorsing Israel’s right to self-defense in the face of Hamas rocket attacks.

Edwards similarly voted present on other resolutions, one calling for Israeli-Palestinian peace talks and another supporting enhanced security U.S.-Israeli security cooperation.

All of those resolutions were symbolic, expressing the view of Congress but carrying no legal weight.

Edwards also staunchly supported the Iranian nuclear agreement of 2015 and pointedly refused to add her name to letters pressing then-President Barack Obama on sanctions against Iran and Syria.

Ivey’s opponent in the November elections will likely be Jeff Warner, a pastor who was leading the Republican primary by a wide margin with 72 percent of the votes counted.

The fire is under control as firefighters were working to put out the fire.

By JNS

A massive fire erupted at the Jewish Camps Airy & Louise summer camp for boys in western Maryland on Wednesday morning, with no injuries reported.

Officials said that smoke rising from the fire and flames could be seen miles away, reported WUSA9. The fire quickly spread from the dining hall to other floors in the building, according to police.

The smoke was spotted as breakfast was being prepared, with an alarm quickly sounded, camp director Marty Rochlin said at a press conference.

“It’s a building most of us grew up in, had all our meals in as campers and as staff,” Rochlin said. “Thankfully, it’s just a building. Camp can continue because camp is the people.”

Emergency services received calls around 7:30 a.m. about a fire at the camp.

Police said the dining hall was empty when the fire began. The fire is under control as firefighters were working to put out the fire, according to the report.

A spokesperson for the camp stated that “we wanted to advise everyone that all campers, counselors and staff are safe and accounted for. No one was injured in the event.”

The camp, was founded in the 1920s, and according to its website, serves families “from across the spectrum of Judaism”.

“We may have lost a building today, but what makes our camp special is the people who have been gathering here for nearly a century. We remain focused on making sure that every camper has an incredible session on the mountain this summer,” camp officials wrote in a Facebook post Thursday.

Larry Hogan.

By Lauren Marcus, World Israel News

A Maryland bill passed on Saturday, which repeals the so-called police officers’ bill of rights, will endanger police morale and public safety, Republican lawmakers warned.

The new Maryland Police Accountability Act removes protections for police in cases of alleged misconduct. Republican Gov. Larry Hogan vetoed the bill, but the state’s Democrat-controlled General Assembly was able to overturn the veto.

Hogan wrote in the explanation for his veto that the bill “would further erode police morale, community relationships, and public confidence.

“[The bill] will result in great damage to police recruitment and retention, posing significant risks to public safety throughout our state,” he wrote.

Republican state Sen. Robert Cassilly echoed Hogan’s concerns.

According to the Baltimore Sun, he referred to the bill as “anti-cop” and said it places the opinions of bureaucrats over the real-word experiences of police officers.

It “allows for hindsight review of folks sitting in the easy chairs to judge people who made split-second decisions in volatile situations,” he said.

The MPAA bill rolls back nearly all of the protections for officers included in the police bill of rights, such as protection from lawsuits and caps on civil damages individual officers would need to pay in a civil judgement.

The new bill increases civil liability for police officers found guilty of misconduct from $400,000 to $800,000 and sets a new standard for what is considered “necessary force.”

Under the new MPAA policy, officers found guilty of using excessive force can now be sentenced to up to 10 years in prison. It also “gives civilians a role” in the investigation process of officers accused of misconduct.

Additionally, it restricts the use of no-knock raids to daytime hours only and mandates that by 2025, all officers use body cameras whenever they are on duty.

Democratic Del. Vanessa Atterbeary slammed Hogan for vetoing the bill.

“[He] does not stand with Black & Brown people in the state of MD! He has missed the NATL MOVEMENT calling for #PoliceReform & #PoliceAccountability. SHAME ON HIM,” she tweeted.

In 1974, Maryland became the first state to introduce a police officers’ bill of rights, setting the stage for 20 other states to implement similar laws.

Maryland is now the first state to revoke these protections for law enforcement officers.
