According to Ashkenazi, any conflict and its economic and security consequences would likely need to be resolved before the November midterm elections.

The report also said Israeli officials believed Trump had delayed any major escalation in recent weeks because of celebrations marking the United States’ 250th anniversary, as well as the ongoing FIFA World Cup, which is being hosted in part by the United States.

With the anniversary events now concluded and the World Cup set to end next week, Israeli analysts believe the administration may have greater flexibility if it decides additional military action is necessary.

Speaking to Walla, another defense source described the current geopolitical climate in the Middle East as “explosive,” warning that the Israeli military could rapidly transition from routine operations to full-scale combat if circumstances require.

The source told Walla that neither the United States nor Iran appears eager to return to open warfare, adding that Tehran is attempting to buy time by prolonging negotiations with Washington.

However, the official warned that repeated attacks on commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, combined with calls from Iranian hardliners to assassinate President Trump, could eventually cause the U.S. president to “lose patience.”

Another indication cited by Israeli media that regional tensions remain elevated was Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s decision to abruptly cancel a visit to Israel that had been scheduled for Wednesday.

In the early hours of Wednesday morning, the United States carried out airstrikes against dozens of targets across Iran following attacks on commercial vessels traveling through the Strait of Hormuz.

Also on Wednesday, Trump declared that the Memorandum of Understanding with Iran was “over” and referred to the Iranian regime as “scum,” underscoring the increasingly confrontational tone between Washington and Tehran despite previous diplomatic efforts to stabilize the situation.

President Donald Trump said Wednesday that he considers the Memorandum of Understanding with Iran to be over after the United States and Iran exchanged military strikes across the Middle East, dismissing the agreement as “a waste of time.”

Speaking alongside NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte at the NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey, Trump said he no longer believes diplomacy with Tehran is worthwhile.

“For me, I think it’s over,” Trump told reporters. “As far as I’m concerned it’s just a waste of time.”

“I’ll let our wonderful negotiators keep talking if they want, but I don’t see it,” he added. “I don’t like these people.”

Trump then intensified his criticism of Iran’s leadership.

“They’re liars. I don’t want to deal with them anymore. They’re scum,” he said. “They are vicious, violent people, and if they had a nuclear weapon they would use it.”

Comparing Iran to a deadly disease, Trump added, “We have to rid their cancer,; they’re cancer. And you know what you do? You’ve got to cut out cancer early. And that’s the way I feel.”

An Israeli journalist wrote an open letter to deliver a sharp rebuke of President Donald Trump’s deal with Iran, accusing the president of abandoning his own strategic objectives and weakening both American and Israeli interests.

The letter, written by veteran journalist Danny Zaken and addressed directly to President Trump, appeared in Israel Hayom, the newspaper owned by Miriam Adelson, a longtime Trump ally and the widow of the late Sheldon Adelson.

Iranian negotiators walked out of talks in Switzerland on Sunday after objecting to remarks by President Donald Trump during the opening of a summit focused on Lebanon ceasefire implementation and frozen Iranian assets, while officials later signaled discussions could resume following consultations.

The negotiations in Geneva brought together U.S. Vice President JD Vance, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.

The participants were discussing implementation of a comprehensive Lebanon ceasefire and issues related to Iranian assets held abroad.

As the summit opened, President Trump told Fox News: “I hold all the cards and have several options if the Iranians do not seriously commit during the negotiations.” He added that he had spoken with Iranian officials and warned that “if Iran closes the Strait of Hormuz – they will not have a country.”

Reuters reported that the Iranian delegation submitted a reservation to mediators following the comments and said it was “considering its options.”

“There will be NO TOLLS in the Hormuz Strait for 60 days during the Cease Fire Period, and there will be NO TOLLS after the 60 day period has expired, unless they are imposed by and for the United States of America, should the deal not be completed, for services rendered as the Guardian Angel to the countries of the Middle East for purposes of both past, present, and future reimbursement of costs,” Trump wrote in a post on his Truth Social platform.

The president’s warning came amid growing confusion over whether the waterway is fully open, partially restricted, or once again being used by Iran as leverage in the broader regional confrontation.

Iran announced on Wednesday that it had reopened the Strait following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). But on Saturday, Tehran said it had closed the passage again as a punitive measure, saying it was shuttering the waterway due to Israel continued to target Hezbollah terrorists in southern Lebanon. Tehran has argued that this is a violation of the ceasefire framework, while Israel says it is not a party to the agreement.

Iran has claimed that an Israeli withdrawal from southern Lebanon is one of the conditions of the MoU, arguing that the ceasefire outline requires Israel to halt military operations in both Lebanon and Gaza. Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Roger Wicker (R-Miss.) voiced concerns Thursday about the memorandum of understanding involving Iran, arguing that key provisions of the agreement risk diminishing the gains achieved through Operation Epic Fury and could weaken pressure on Tehran.

In a statement released in Washington, Wicker said he had backed President Donald Trump’s efforts to confront Iran since the beginning of his administration.

“Specifically, the $300 billion fund for the reconstruction and economic development of Iran – though not funded by U.S. taxpayers – would make Iran’s payoff under President Obama’s 2015 deal look like a pittance by comparison,” Wicker said.

The Mississippi Republican also objected to any arrangement that would require Israel to halt military action against Hezbollah, which he described as “an Iranian-backed terrorist organization that continues to attack Israel on its northern border.”

“I also oppose the U.S. lifting any sanctions on Iran, or unfreezing Iranian funds, in exchange for Iran’s mere agreement to negotiate for another 60 days,” he said.

Wicker argued that Iran’s leadership has not abandoned its stated objectives toward the United States and Israel.

“The Iranian regime has not renounced its ultimate goal — ‘Death to America, Death to Israel.’ The regime will invest every penny it receives to further that aim.”

He concluded by expressing support for President Trump’s broader approach while cautioning against efforts that could weaken it.

“President Trump has pursued peace through strength. I hope the intermediaries working on this deal are not undermining that objective.”

U.S. Vice President JD Vance defended the memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran on Thursday, criticizing Israeli concerns about the agreement and arguing that opposition to the deal was driven by misinformation and mistrust.

Speaking to The New York Times, Vance described the reaction in Israel to the agreement, which was signed digitally by President Donald Trump on Wednesday night in Versailles, as a “freakout” that stemmed from a lack of confidence in Washington.

“I find this whole freakout in Israel a little bit odd because I think that it comes from a place of mistrust, and I think that America has earned the trust of that region of the world,” Vance said.

“We’ve done a very good job by that particular country and that particular government, and I think that the idea that we’ve made a terrible deal is not supported by the facts, but just doesn’t make any sense if you consider the broad length of the relationship,” he added.

Vance said concerns within Israel over concessions to Tehran amounted to a “weird panic” and argued that any benefits provided to Iran, including sanctions relief, would depend on changes in Iranian conduct.

“There is this weird panic almost in the Israeli system that I’ve picked up on where they assume that everything that is contemplated that is good for Iran will happen — but that will happen without the Iranians changing any behavior. And I just don’t know why anybody would think that’s true,” he said.

While noting that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had not directly criticized the agreement, Vance pointed to opposition from other Israeli officials, including National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir.

“It’s clear that large segments of the Israeli political system and population are very sensitive about this deal,” he said. “But I also think they’re picking up on some misinformation about the deal and running with it and sort of panicking about it.”

Addressing critics of the agreement, Vance said, “I guess my response to them would be: What is your exact proposal? You’re a country of nine million people. You can’t just kill your way out of solving every single national security problem that you have.”

During a press conference, Vance also defended President Trump’s statement that Iran should be permitted to retain some ballistic missiles.

“All the president said yesterday is that, of course, regional countries don’t give up the right of self-defense,” Vance said.

Miles Taylor, a former Department of Homeland Security official, described the agreement as “possibly the most humiliating in U.S. diplomatic history.”

Taylor argued that the MoU grants Iran “hundreds of billions in exchange for a ‘promise’ we already had,” referring to Tehran’s commitment to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and refrain from developing a nuclear weapon.

Critics note that the Strait of Hormuz was open before the conflict erupted and point to Iran’s history of enriching uranium to levels approaching weapons-grade purity despite repeated international assurances.

Former Vice President Mike Pence also condemned the agreement, comparing it to the 2015 nuclear deal negotiated under former President Barack Obama.

“The reported MOU with Iran smacks of the kind of appeasement that we saw during the Obama years, the kind of appeasement that Joe Biden tried to accomplish and was ignored by the Iranians, and the kind of appeasement we categorically rejected during the first Trump administration,” Pence wrote on X.

Will Chamberlain, senior counsel at the Article III Project and vice president of external affairs at the Edmund Burke Foundation, likewise criticized the agreement.

Writing on X, Chamberlain said the “deal is absolutely terrible.”

He further argued that the MoU “gives Iranians huge, immediate financial benefits and protection for Hezbollah in exchange for opening the Strait – and nothing else.”

Chamberlain concluded by urging that “President Trump should renege” on the agreement.

President Donald Trump has formally signed the controversial U.S.-Iran memorandum of understanding, but the biggest story may not be the signing itself.

It is what was signed.

After days of speculation and secrecy, the full text of the agreement has now emerged, revealing a framework that would provide Iran with sweeping economic benefits while postponing many of the most contentious security issues to future negotiations.

The deal, signed by Trump on Wednesday during a dinner with French President Emmanuel Macron at the Palace of Versailles, was also signed by Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.

A White House official confirmed that a photograph of the signed document was transmitted to Iran and the countries that mediated the negotiations. As he left Versailles, Trump acknowledged the signing, telling reporters, “It’s signed, yes.”

With both leaders having signed the memorandum, plans for a formal signing ceremony in Geneva were canceled.

The newly released text helps explain why the agreement has already generated concern among Israeli officials and many Iran hawks in Washington.

According to the 14-point memorandum, the United States would facilitate broad sanctions relief for Iran, support the resumption of Iranian oil exports, and work toward restoring Tehran’s access to frozen assets held abroad.

The agreement also outlines a massive economic development and reconstruction initiative that would channel over $300 billion into Iran over the coming years.

The agreement does not seek to curtail Iran’s support of terror proxies in the region, including Hamas, Hezbollah, the Houthis and pro-Iran Iraqi militias.

Supporters of the agreement argue that the memorandum successfully ended a dangerous regional conflict that threatened to draw the United States deeper into another Middle Eastern war.

They contend that stabilizing the region, reopening maritime trade routes, and reducing the risk of escalation are important achievements that create space for a more comprehensive agreement.

Critics see something very different.

They argue that Tehran is receiving significant economic relief upfront while retaining much of the leverage it has accumulated over years of nuclear development and regional aggression.

For Israel, the concern is particularly acute.

Jerusalem has long maintained that any acceptable agreement with Iran must permanently dismantle the regime’s pathway to nuclear weapons and substantially curtail its ability to arm and fund terrorist proxies throughout the region.

The text appears to stop short of those objectives.

Iranian officials, meanwhile, have celebrated another victory in the negotiations.

According to reports from Iranian media, Tehran insisted that a Persian-language version of the memorandum be prepared and formally recognized as an official text alongside the original agreement.

The 14-point document begins with a declaration of the “immediate and permanent termination” of military operations between the United States, Iran, and their allies. The ceasefire applies across all fronts, including Lebanon, and commits both sides to refrain from future military action or threats of force against one another. The agreement also affirms Lebanon’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.

Under the framework, Washington and Tehran pledge to respect each other’s sovereignty and avoid interference in each other’s internal affairs. Both sides agree to negotiate a final accord within 60 days, with the option of extending talks by mutual consent.

Several provisions focus on maritime security and trade. The United States agrees to begin lifting its naval blockade immediately and to remove it completely within 30 days.

Iran, in turn, commits to facilitating the safe passage of commercial vessels through the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz without charge for 60 days. American forces are intercepting Iranian drones targeting vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.

A senior Trump administration official told NBC News that Iran has continued launching explosive drones at commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz despite the digital signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on Sunday evening.

The official said U.S. forces have been working to intercept the drones, which are being launched by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, before they can damage commercial shipping or American military assets in the region.

According to the official, the attacks are not isolated incidents. Drones have reportedly been launched nightly for the past three consecutive nights.

The continued attacks come despite President Donald Trump’s repeated assertions that the Strait of Hormuz remains fully open and safe for maritime traffic.

The U.S. military continues to support commercial vessels attempting to transit the strategic waterway, many of which have been stranded in the area for nearly four months following the outbreak of the war in late February.
