Microsoft has partially suspended services to Israel’s Unit 8200, the IDF’s premier signals intelligence branch following claims by activist-linked media outlets that the unit used the company’s Azure platform to store data on Palestinian communications.

The Guardian, together with +972 Magazine and Local Call, published a report last month alleging that Unit 8200 built a program capable of recording and analyzing millions of calls daily in Gaza and Judea and Samaria.

Microsoft responded by conducting an external review of its cooperation with the unit.

Sources told The Guardian that the decision followed a 2021 meeting between Microsoft Chief Executive Satya Nadella and Unit 8200 Commander Yossi Sariel.

Leveraging Azure’s storage capacity and computing power, the unit reportedly developed a system designed to intercept calls.

The scale of the program was reflected in what officers described internally as “a million calls an hour.”

According to the report, up to 8,000 terabytes of intercepted calls were initially held in a Microsoft data center in the Netherlands.

After the Guardian published its findings, the intelligence data was swiftly relocated in August, apparently to Amazon Web Services.

In a letter to employees, Microsoft Vice Chair and President Brad Smith stated that the company had “ceased and disabled a set of services to a unit within the Israeli Ministry of Defense,” including cloud storage and AI services.

He stressed that Microsoft “does not provide technology to facilitate mass surveillance of civilians.”

Despite the move, Israel’s military relationship with Microsoft remains largely intact.

Military officials noted that Unit 8200 had prepared in advance and secured its data before Microsoft’s restrictions were imposed. No information was lost, and the IDF continues to access other Microsoft technologies.

Neither Amazon nor the IDF has commented publicly on the reports. The episode reflects growing pressure campaigns targeting Israel’s security cooperation with global technology companies, even as Unit 8200 remains central to defending the country from terrorism and external threats.

Police removed seven activists who accused the company of illegally aiding Israel in its war in Gaza.

Anti-Israel activists occupied the Microsoft president’s office in Washington Tuesday and had to be removed by the police after refusing to leave.

“Obviously, when seven folks do as they did today — storm a building, occupy an office, block other people out of the office, plant listening devices, even in crude form, in the form of telephones, cellphones hidden under couches and behind books — that’s not OK,” Brad Smith told reporters after the incident.

“When they’re asked to leave and they refuse, that’s not OK,” he said. Authorities were called in and “literally had to take them out of the building.”

The No Azure for Apartheid group, only two of whom were Microsoft employees, was protesting at the company’s headquarters over Israel’s alleged use of Microsoft’s Azure cloud platform in its war in Gaza, which the activists call a “genocide.”

Over the past year, the group has disrupted several Microsoft events to demand the tech giant cut ties with the Israeli government and military, accusing it of enabling alleged war crimes with its services.

Last week, 20 people were arrested during a two-day protest on the campus, calling for a “worker intifada,” after they “resisted and became aggressive” when asked to leave, police said.

Sixteen of them had never worked for the company, Smith noted.

On Sunday, about a dozen pro-Palestinian demonstrators in kayaks approached waterfront homes of Smith and CEO Satya Nadella, chanting slogans, holding signs labeling them “war criminals” and accusing the company of profiteering from war.

It was unclear how many of them worked for Microsoft.

Bloomberg reported Tuesday that, according to internal emails it reviewed, the company asked the FBI to investigate certain current or former employees connected to the protests.

When contacted, the FBI — without naming Microsoft — said it recognizes the inviolability of free speech but that criminal threats are another matter.

Earlier this month, The Guardian reported that for years, Israeli intelligence has used a secure section of the Azure platform to store millions of Palestinian phone call recordings, which it can sift to identify suspected terrorists in Gaza or Judea and Samaria.

Microsoft responded to the report by saying that it would undertake “a full and urgent review” of the allegations, but noted a prior review “did not identify any usage by the IDF that violated the company’s terms of service.”

“We have found no evidence to date that Microsoft’s Azure and AI technologies have been used to target or harm people in the conflict in Gaza,” the company said.

Protesters demanded Microsoft cut all ties with the Israeli government and IDF.

At least 18 people were arrested at an anti-Israel protest outside Microsoft’s headquarters in Redmond, Washington, on Wednesday, at a demonstration that saw activists rename the office park “Martyred Palestinian Children’s Plaza.”

The protest group, made up of Microsoft employees, calls itself No Azure for Apartheid — a reference to the company’s Azure software, which protesters claim is used by the Israel Defense Forces. In a manifesto posted online, the group called for a “worker intifada.”

“We will not be cogs in the Israeli genocidal machine,” the statement read, declaring there is “only one solution: Intifada, Revolution.”

During two consecutive days of disruptive protests at Microsoft offices, activists demanded the tech giant cut all ties with the Israeli government, military, and prison services.

Participants carried signs including “No Labor for Genocide” and “Stop Starving Gaza.” Some protesters displayed mock bloody body bags, splattered red paint meant to symbolize blood, and held pictures of children killed during the conflict.

“Every single second that we wait, things are worse and worse in Palestine,” said Microsoft employee Nasreen Jaradat, 29, in an interview with far-left UK media outlet the Guardian.

“People are getting hungrier and hungrier. More and more people are being bombed and maimed. It’s time for us to escalate, however we can.”

According to the Redmond Police Department, arrests were made after protesters “resisted and became aggressive” when asked to leave the area.

“We said, ‘Please leave or you will be arrested,’ and they chose not to leave so they were detained,” police spokesperson Jill Green said.

Microsoft issued a statement denying the protesters’ claims, insisting that its technology is not being used in Israel’s war against Hamas.

“We have found no evidence to date that Microsoft’s Azure and AI technologies have been used to target or harm people in the conflict in Gaza,” the company said.

A legal organization accused Microsoft of violating federal anti-discrimination laws and contributing to “widespread anti-Semitism” in its workplace, warning it will sue unless the tech giant fixes the problem.

The Louis D. Brandeis Center for Human Rights Under the Law wrote in a Monday letter to Microsoft that its refusal to allow employees of all races and ethnicities—including Jews—to establish resource groups is illegal.

Microsoft currently funds nine Employee Resource Groups (ERGs), which host educational events and provide a channel through which employees can communicate concerns about workplace discrimination to corporate leadership.

Existing ERGs include “Asians at Microsoft,” “Blacks at Microsoft,” “Hispanic and Latinx Organization of Leaders in Action,” and “Indigenous at Microsoft.”

Brandeis Center director of corporate initiatives and senior counsel Rory Lancman wrote in the letter that the climate at Microsoft demonstrates why the lack of a Jewish ERG—which would help resolve issues of anti-Semitism—is an issue.

An “Interfaith ERG” at Microsoft included non-Jewish employees who told their Jewish coworkers that they “should expect people to blame Jews for what Israel was doing” and that they should stop complaining about anti-Semitism because “Christians and Arabs face more and worse in the world” and “there were so many countries where Jews were the majority,” Lancman noted.

Immediately after Hamas’s October 7 attack against Israel, Microsoft employees used the company’s internal messaging platform to write slogans like “from the River to the Sea, Palestine will be free,” accuse Israel of being an apartheid state, and deny a Jewish right to self-determination, according to Lancman.

The Brandeis Center pointed to other incidents in the letter, including graffiti on campus, inappropriate speakers at employee events, and anti-Israel protests and disruptions, arguing that company policy has left Jewish employees at a disadvantage and “allowed anti-Semitism to fester at Microsoft.”

The Brandeis Center asserted that Microsoft is discriminating against employees who do not fall under any of the nine ERG categories.

“Jewish and non-Jewish employees must be provided ERGs on the same terms and conditions as other employees at Microsoft regardless of t heir ethnicity or shared ancestry,” the letter reads. “It’s the right thing to do, and it’s the law.”

Lancman told the Washington Free Beacon that Jewish employees desire their own ERGs because “they don’t feel they have the tools to effectively address” workplace anti-Semitism, noting that diversity, equity, and inclusion offices are often responsible for “encouraging or fomenting that anti-Semitism.”

Microsoft, the Brandeis Center wrote in its letter, objects to a Jewish ERG because it characterizes Jews as a religious group, not an ethnic one.

Lancman, describing an “unwillingness of corporate America to accept Jewish identity on the terms that their Jewish employees understand Jewish identity,” told the Free Beacon that the law is clear.

“Jews are an ethnicity under the law, and ethnicities are protected by federal, state, and local anti discrimination laws,” he added. “So our message to Microsoft is, insofar as you’re going to have ethnicity-based employee resource groups, then you need to allow your Jewish employees to have them.”

The former workers accused senior executives of having “blood on their hands” over the IDF’s use of Microsoft AI in its military operations in Gaza.

At a recent event celebrating Microsoft’s 50th anniversary, the U.S. technology giant fired two of its employees following an outburst directed at its AI CEO, Mustafa Suleyman, over the company’s close ties with Israel.

The celebration, held on Friday in Redmond, in Washington state—where the company is headquartered—was attended by senior figures, including Microsoft founder Bill Gates and former CEO Steve Ballmer. During Suleyman’s address, Ibtihal Aboussad, a Moroccan engineer based in Canada, said the company was not using its AI for good but was being sold to the “Israeli military.” Quoting straight from the Hamas playbook, she effectively accused the company of being complicit in the death of 50,000 people, saying that “Microsoft powers genocide [sic] in our region.”

Security officers cut her protest short and escorted her from the premises. Vaniya Agrawal, another employee, also interrupted the event.

Aboussad was fired on Monday over “just cause, wilful misconduct, disobedience or wilful neglect of duty.” There was some confusion over whether Microsoft terminated Agrawal’s contract or whether she preemptively resigned, but it was both. She had already given her notice in a widely circulated email to colleagues, although she was told to leave five days early.

As it has done previously in similar situations, the company emphasized in its letter that there are official channels through which to raise issues, and these channels do not include making such accusations in public, which were “designed to gain notoriety and cause maximum disruption to this highly anticipated event.”

A Microsoft employee disrupted the company’s 50th anniversary event, accusing its AI chief of enabling “genocide” in Gaza.

An anti-Israel Microsoft employee disrupted an event celebrating the company’s 50th anniversary on Friday, shouting at a prominent executive that he was complicit in the Israeli “genocide” in Gaza.

During a speech by Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman about the tech titan’s vision for the future, a woman suddenly began yelling from the audience.

“Mustafa, shame on you,” Ibtihal Aboussad screamed, according to an NBC News report. Abouassad was identified by the network as an employee of Microsoft AI’s speech recognition engine team.

“You claim that you care for using AI for good, but Microsoft sells AI weapons to the Israeli military,” she continued.

“Fifty thousand people have died, and Microsoft powers this genocide in our region,” she added.

At multiple points during Abouassad’s outburst, Suleyman repeated “thank you for your protest” and “I hear you.”

But Suleyman’s words did not subdue Abouassad. “Shame on you. You are a war profiteer,” she shouted.

“Stop using AI for genocide, Mustafa. Stop using AI for genocide in our region. You have blood on your hands. Microsoft is killing children. All of Microsoft has blood on its hands.”

Abouassad was then ejected from the event by security guards. Suleyman appeared rattled by the exchange.

According to an AP report, former Microsoft CEO and founder Bill Gates and current CEO Satya Nadella were in the audience at the time of the disruption.

In an email viewed by CNBC that Abouassad sent to Microsoft executives after the event, she wrote that she “did not sign up to write code that violates human rights.”

Within the missive, Abouassad repeated her claims that Microsoft’s support for alleged Israeli war crimes in Gaza, saying that he had “no other moral choice” but to speak out during the event.

“We provide many avenues for all voices to be heard. Importantly, we ask that this be done in a way that does not cause a business disruption,” a Microsoft spokesperson said in a media statement after the incident. “If that happens, we ask participants to relocate.”

The tech company did not say if it would discipline Abouassad over the incident.

Employees attacked Microsoft as “an evil Zionist corporation facilitating and empowering a genocide.”

Microsoft fired two employees, both originally from Egypt, after they participated in a vigil at the company’s headquarters praising slain terrorists and accusing Israel of genocide.

Egyptian nationals Abdo Mohamed and Hossam Nasr were members of an anti-Israel group of Microsoft employees, who are opposed to the use of the company’s products by the Israel government.

Calling themselves “No Azure for Apartheid,” Mohamed and Nasr staged a protest vigil at Microsoft’s Redmond, Washington offices last Thursday.

During the event, which they claimed was to “honor victims of the Palestinian genocide,” the men claimed that Microsoft is “complicit” in the alleged human rights violations against Gazans.

The vigil did not distinguish between armed terrorists who were killed in battle with the IDF and civilians, nor did it acknowledge that numerous civilians in Gaza have been killed by misfired rockets or even murdered by Hamas gunmen for distributing humanitarian aid.

Nasr attacked Microsoft as “an evil Zionist corporation facilitating and empowering a genocide” in a post on his Instagram account.

Microsoft fired both men by phone call on the same day as the vigil.

Speaking to the Associated Press, Mohammed was quick to play victim over his termination.

Because he is permitted to be in the U.S. only due to his work visa, he must find a new job or may face deportation, he told the news agency.

Hamas-linked Muslim advocacy group CAIR claimed that the men were innocent victims.

“This is yet another illustration of how employees of conscience, who are standing up for the human rights issue of our time, are being silenced in the corporate world,” said CAIR-WA Executive Director Imraan Siddiqi in a press statement.

“In any other context, a corporation would celebrate its employees standing up for human rights and against genocide – ‘except for Palestine,'” claimed CAIR National Executive Director Nihad Awad.

When asked to generate an ‘Israel octopus,’ it responded with an octopus wearing an Israeli flag while wrapping its tentacles around the globe.

Microsoft’s artificial intelligence image generator erases Israel from the map when asked to create a geographical image of “Palestine,” according to a review of the program by the Washington Free Beacon.

When the Free Beacon prompted Microsoft’s Copilot to create a “map of Palestine,” all four of the images generated by the program showed the entire state of Israel labeled as “Palestine,” alongside the Palestinian flag.

But when asked to create a “map of Israel,” the program showed the current map of Israel, including its borders with the West Bank.

The results could raise new questions about the politicization of artificial intelligence platforms.

On Wednesday, CNBC reported on violent and controversial images generated by the platform, including an image of Elsa, the character from the Disney movie Frozen, holding a “Free Gaza” sign.

The Free Beacon was able to reproduce similar pictures with the program.

When asked to create images of “Elsa in Palestine,” the generator depicted her wearing a keffiyeh, a headscarf associated with Palestinian terrorists.

A prompt of “Elsa in Israel,” meanwhile, generates an image of Elsa holding a menorah.

A request for a picture of “Children in Palestine” produced politically charged images of Palestinian youth playing soccer while surrounded by razor wire-topped walls and murals of soldiers attacking a Palestinian child.

In contrast, a request for “Children in Israel” only generated images of children on a playground without any references to violence or war.

Similarly, prompts for “Palestinian civilians” and “Palestinian people” turned up images of Palestinian protesters holding signs for “Freedom, Justice, and Equality for Paleestine [sic],” and Palestinian families sitting in rubble from bombed out buildings.

In contrast, “Israeli civilians” and “Israeli people” showed pictures of Israeli families eating dinner and enjoying picnics.

When asked to generate an “Israel octopus,” all three images created by the program were of sea creatures covered in the Israeli flag while wrapping their tentacles around the globe—classic anti-Semitic imagery.

A request for “Palestine octopus” generated one image of an octopus with “Palestine” written on its head while clutching weapons.

A second image showed an octopus with a Jewish Star of David on its head, while similarly holding weapons and Palestinian flags.

A spokesman for Microsoft told the Free Beacon that the company was working to address the issues.

“When these reports surface, we take the appropriate steps to address them. We continue to incorporate user feedback and put additional controls in place to help our system detect and stop prompts that could lead to the creation of harmful content,” said the spokesman.

“We have large teams working on the development of guardrails and other safety systems in line with our responsible AI principles to help create a safer environment, and remain committed to making it a positive and helpful experience for users.”

More than 250 companies have been targeted by a group of Iranian hackers so far, although fewer than 20 have been compromised.

A new Iranian group is suspected of being behind current attacks against security-related companies linked to American, Israeli and European governments, Microsoft said in a security alert Monday.

The hackers, dubbed DEV-0343, are targeting defense companies “producing military-grade radars, drone technology, satellite systems, and emergency response communication systems” for these countries, the conglomerate’s Threat Intelligence Center said.

Besides focusing on U.S. and Israeli defense technology companies, they are also trying to hack “regional ports of entry in the Persian Gulf, and several maritime and cargo transportation companies with a business focus in the Middle East.”

The attacks, which are still ongoing, have hit more than 250 Microsoft Office 365 clients but have managed to compromise fewer than 20, the company said in a blog post on the subject. In response, the computer giant informed all the targeted clients of the attack and how to secure themselves after the fact. It also sent out instructions to all Office 365 customers on how to find out if they have been hacked, and locate which specific accounts may have had information stolen from them.

The company is also warning that “DEV-0343 continues to evolve their techniques to refine its attacks.”

The post enumerated several reasons why it believes Iranian actors are behind the online strikes. Firstly, the company said, “This activity likely supports the national interests of the Islamic Republic of Iran.” The companies being pursued “supports Iranian government tracking of adversary security services and maritime shipping in the Middle East to enhance their contingency plans. Gaining access to commercial satellite imagery and proprietary shipping plans and logs could help Iran compensate for its developing satellite program.”

Since Iran has attacked maritime targets in the past, both physically and in the cyber realm, the company said, it is “encouraging” their clients in these industries and regions “to review the information shared in this blog to defend themselves from this threat.”

The Islamic Republic has been accused of being behind several attacks on ships in the Persian Gulf in recent years, including most recently a July suicide drone attack on the Mercer Street, a cargo vessel managed by an Israeli company.

Another indicator is that the pattern of attack and techniques are similar to past attempts made by the Islamic Republic. In this specific case the criminals are using a technique called “password spraying,” in which they first discover employees’ usernames by getting into companies’ email servers and then feed the same password to one account after the other.

Last October, Microsoft reported that Iranian-backed hackers sent fake emails to more than a hundred potential attendees of the Munich Security Conference that managed to fool high-level experts who help shape foreign policy in several governments into sending them their email passwords. The hackers then entered their victims’ accounts and stole their mail and contact lists “for intelligence collection purposes,” said Microsoft’s customer security and trust chief Tom Burt.

Bill and Melinda Gates said Monday that they are divorcing but would keep working together at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, one of the largest charitable foundations in the world.

The New York Post reports, “Melinda Gates was the one to file for divorce from Bill Gates — and the billionaire philanthropist couple apparently did not have a prenuptial agreement, court documents reveal.”

In identical tweets, the Microsoft co-founder and his wife said they had made the decision to end their marriage of 27 years.

“We have raised three incredible children and built a foundation that works all over the world to enable all people to lead healthy, productive lives,” they said in a statement. “We ask for space and privacy for our family as we begin to navigate this new life.”

Bill Gates was formerly the world’s richest person and his fortune is estimated at well over $100 billion. How the couple end up settling their estate and any impact on the foundation will be closely watched, especially after another high-profile Seattle-area billionaire couple recently ended their marriage.

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos and MacKenzie Bezos finalized their divorce in 2019. MacKenzie Scott has since remarried and now focuses on her own philanthropy after receiving a 4% stake in Amazon, worth more than $36 billion.

The Gateses were married in 1994 in Hawaii. They met after she began working at Microsoft as a product manager in 1987.

In her 2019 memoir, The Moment of Lift, Melinda Gates wrote about her childhood, life and private struggles as the wife of a public icon and stay-at-home mom with three kids. She won Bill Gates’ heart after meeting at a work dinner, sharing a mutual love of puzzles and beating him at a math game.

She also detailed the ways they navigated imbalances in their marriage and parenting journey and noted how working together at the foundation made their relationship better.

“Bill and I are equal partners,” Melinda Gates said in a 2019 interview with The Associated Press. “Men and women should be equal at work.”

The Seattle-based Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is the most influential private foundation in the world, with an endowment worth nearly $50 billion. It has focused on global health and development and U.S. education issues since incorporating in 2000.

While both are global figures, Melinda Gates has increasingly built her profile as a champion of women and girls. The former tech business executive launched her private Pivotal Ventures investment and incubation company in 2015 and recently partnered with Scott for a newly announced equity challenge.

David Callahan, founder of the Insider Philanthropy website and author of “The Givers: Wealth, Power, and Philanthropy in a New Gilded Age” says it’s too early to know how the divorce will affect the Gates foundation and the wider philanthropic community.

Although the couple say they will continue to work together at their foundation, Callahan suggests Melinda Gates could still pursue her own philanthropic work.

“You can imagine two separate tracks where they’re both working together at the foundation, and each is pursuing their own independent philanthropy outside the foundation,” Callahan said.

He said the possibility of Melinda Gates opening another philanthropic foundation would have a dramatic impact.

“Nobody knows what the terms are of their divorce agreement. But if Melinda Gates ends up with just some portion of that wealth and turns to creating her own foundation, it would be among one of the biggest foundations probably in America,” Callahan said.

As the public face of the foundation’s COVID-19 grants and advocacy work, Bill Gates has come under fire for being a staunch supporter of intellectual property rights for vaccine makers. While the tech icon says protecting the shots’ recipes will ensure incentives for research and development, critics claim that mentality hampers supply in favor of drug company profits.

Last year, Bill Gates said he was stepping down from Microsoft’s board to focus on philanthropy.

He was Microsoft’s CEO until 2000 and since then has gradually scaled back his involvement in the company he started with Paul Allen in 1975. He transitioned out of a day-to-day role in Microsoft in 2008 and served as chairman of the board until 2014.

Many news agencies are taking artificial intelligence (AI) technology a step further by using it to virtually eliminate the need for human journalism.

We may soon be entering an era where human reporters will become obsolete.

Last week, Microsoft Corp. announced it was laying off 50 of its independently contracted news editors.

“Like all companies, we evaluate our business on a regular basis,” a Microsoft spokesman said in a statement. “This can result in increased investment in some places and, from time to time, re-deployment in others. These decisions are not the result of the current pandemic.”

However, the real reason why the cuts were made is because all editorial duties will now be handled by Artificial Intelligence algorithms, reports The Seattle Times.

Even though Microsoft was already using AI to curate news content from its publishing partners, the company employed humans to rewrite headlines or add better accompanying photographs.

“It’s been semi-automated for a few months but now it’s full speed ahead,’’ one of the terminated editors said as quoted by the paper. “It’s demoralizing to think machines can replace us but there you go.’’

As of 2013, Microsoft began rolling back its original news content on its Microsoft Edge web home page and eventually completely replaced it with stories from top news agencies in exchange for a share in advertising revenue.

Many news agencies are taking AI technology a step further by using it to virtually eliminate the need for human journalism.

Known as “Robot Journalism,” these computer programs analyze vasts amounts of open-source data and automate “human-like” reports about health, crime, employment, and other subjects that can be customized to fit a certain voice, tone, or style.

However, robot journalists aren’t perfect either.

Last month, an LA Times computer-generated news program published a 6.8 magnitude alert for an earthquake in California.

Not only was the alert dated June 29, 2025, but in fact was referring to an earthquake that already took place 100 years earlier.

“It’s extremely irresponsible for Microsoft and Bing to allow this offensive, anti-Jewish content to continue circulating on the internet,” The Lawfare Project’s executive director said.

The Lawfare Project has filed a complaint against Microsoft Corporation in the Courts of Ibiza, Spain on behalf of two Jewish plantiffs for offering Bing results that link to a website with extremely inflammatory anti-Jewish content.

This comes on the heels of a similar case in Spain involving Google LLC, following which The Lawfare Project secured a major victory.

Microsoft has failed to block access to the offensive, anti-Jewish, degrading, and unlawful search result, even after having received detailed information about the content in question.

This complaint could result in a search engine being found liable for third-party content for the first time, not only in Spain, but in other EU and EEA countries with EU-harmonized legislation on the liability of Internet service providers, intermediaries, and platforms.

Brooke Goldstein, executive director of The Lawfare Project, said, “It’s extremely irresponsible for Microsoft and Bing to allow this offensive, anti-Jewish content to continue circulating on the internet in violation of the domestic law in Spain and the EU Directives on the matter.”

Ignacio-Wenley Palacios Iglesias, Spanish counsel for The Lawfare Project, added “The permanent, ubiquitous, and everyday influence Internet service providers have on society as a whole cannot be understated.

“The impact of these providers requires a level of structure and responsibility to address the most extreme, illegal content created by third parties that now enjoy immediate global access via the internet,” he said.
