By Adam Kredo, The Washington Free Beacon

The National Education Association (NEA) was hit with a federal complaint Monday alleging that it subjected Jewish members to an antisemitic environment, according to a copy of the complaint shared with the Washington Free Beacon.

The complaint, filed by the Louis D. Brandeis Center for Human Rights Under Law with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), alleges that the nation’s largest teachers’ union allowed activists within the organization to harass Jewish members.

At the NEA’s 2025 Representative Assembly—the group’s annual gathering—for instance, the union debated a resolution banning materials from the Anti-Defamation League from appearing in classrooms.

During that debate, “delegates aligned with anti-Israel advocacy physically positioned themselves near Jewish Affairs Caucus members, shouted down Jewish participants, and created an atmosphere in which Jewish delegates reasonably feared retaliation and physical harm,” the complaint details.

In some cases, activists “sat or stood so close to Jewish members that they felt unable to clap, which was required to vote, without risking physical contact and confrontation.”

When one Jewish NEA member spoke against the resolution and mentioned the 82-year-old woman killed during a terrorist firebombing attack in Boulder, Colo., last year, her remarks were “met with laughter and clapping by anti-Semitic participants in the assembly.

“Witnesses,” the complaint reads, “described the collective, celebratory reactions to the attack and murder of Jews as threatening and intimidating due to the forceful nature of the gestures, which were directed specifically toward Jewish delegates.”

A similar incident occurred later in the meeting, when members of the union’s Jewish Affairs Caucus attempted to celebrate the 50th anniversary of their group’s formation.

Witnesses cited in the complaint said that members of a competing caucus, Educators for Palestine, “convened several rows behind the Jewish Affairs Caucus members” in a manner that was “coordinated and physically intimidating.”

Security at the conference was eventually forced to intervene and stand “between the Jewish Affairs Caucus member-delegates and the individuals involved.”

NEA president Rebecca S. Pringle allegedly prevented the Jewish Affairs Caucus’s executive chair from speaking even though the leader had received prior authorization to do so and instead “recognized representatives of Educators for Palestine, who had just disrupted the proceedings and interfered with the Executive Chair’s ability to speak.”

Brandeis Center CEO and chairman Kenneth Marcus said in a statement that the radicalism in the union has broader consequences for education.

“The hostile, antisemitic environment propagated by the NEA is not confined to the union; it touches every school and every classroom in which an NEA member works,” Marcus said.

“The NEA’s conduct is both completely illegal and morally unjustifiable.”

The NEA did not respond to a request for comment.

The Brandeis complaint comes less than a year after the House Committee on Education and Workforce launched its own investigation into antisemitism at the NEA in the wake of a July Free Beacon report noting that the NEA planned to promote a version of Holocaust remembrance that did not mention Jews.

A parallel investigation by the EEOC, which protects minority rights under Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, would put additional federal pressure on the NEA to address antisemitism—which the Brandeis complaint says it has neglected to do.

While the NEA has received “numerous complaints” outlining antisemitic harassment within its organization, the union “has failed to conduct timely or meaningful investigations,” or even provide those individuals with a “substantive response,” the complaint charges. This pattern of inaction reinforced a hostile environment for Jewish members and signaled institutional tolerance of anti-Semitism within the union.”

An EEOC spokesman told the Free Beacon that, under federal law, both charges and inquiries filed with the agency must remain confidential and the commission “can neither confirm nor deny” their existence.

“The EEOC can neither confirm nor deny the existence of any charge or charge inquiry,” the official said.

By Alana Goodman, The Washington Free Beacon

The House Committee on Education and Workforce has opened an investigation into whether the National Education Association is “contributing to antisemitism among its members and in classrooms across the United States,” according to a letter obtained by the Washington Free Beacon.

Committee chairman Tim Walberg (R., Mich.) wrote he is “gravely concerned about antisemitic content in the NEA’s 2025 handbook and the NEA Representative Assembly’s vote in July 2025 to ban materials by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL),” in a Thursday letter sent to NEA president Rebecca Pringle.

The investigation comes after a wave of allegations of anti-Semitism against the nation’s largest teachers’ union.

In July, the NEA’s Representative Assembly passed a resolution to boycott the ADL’s Holocaust education materials after union delegates complained the ADL’s definition of anti-Semitism was too strong.

NEA leadership overturned the vote after public outcry, but lawmakers have cited the NEA’s 2025 handbook as further evidence the nation’s largest teachers’ union has embraced an extremist agenda.

The handbook, which outlines the NEA’s annual priorities and strategic goals, included plans to promote a version of Holocaust remembrance that does not specifically mention Jews.

The handbook did, though, give a lengthy description of the NEA’s plans to “educate members and the general public about the history of the Palestinian Nakba,” described as the “forced, violent displacement and dispossession of at least 750,000 Palestinians from their homeland in 1948 during the establishment of Israel.”

The NEA said it would also “educate members about the difference between anti-Zionism and antisemitism” and promote “free speech in defense of Palestine at K-12 schools, colleges, and universities.”

Walberg asked the union to turn over all communications, documents, or meeting minutes from NEA officials that included the words “antisemitism,” “Israel,” “Israeli,” “Palestine,” or “Palestinian,” dating back to Oct. 7, 2023, the day of Hamas’s mass terrorist attacks in Israel.

He also requested documents related to any changes to NEA’s 2025 handbook and the union’s vote to ban ADL materials.

“Unfortunately, the July 8 measure [against the ADL] and the plans set forth in NEA’s handbook raise serious concerns that antisemitism has infected the nation’s largest teachers’ union,” Walberg wrote.

The ADL at the time responded that it was “profoundly disturbing that a group of NEA activists would brazenly attempt to further isolate their Jewish colleagues and push a radical, antisemitic agenda on students.”

Lawmakers have considered taking legislative action against the NEA, including revoking its federal charter, in response to the union’s anti-Israel activism and far-left political engagement.

Walberg said the committee is weighing “legislation to specifically address antisemitic discrimination within labor unions and to combat antisemitism in federally funded schools.”

The NEA is not the only union that has come under fire over its radical anti-Israel agenda. In July, the American Federation of Teachers launched a fundraising campaign for ANERA, a Gaza aid organization accused of working with Hamas-linked groups, the Free Beacon reported at the time.

Mika Hackner, director of research at the North American Values Institute, said the AFT’s fundraising campaign was an “egregious example” of the union “putting dedication to ‘social justice unionism’ ahead of responsibilities to union members and even to students.”

By Alana Goodman, The Washington Free Beacon

The nation’s largest teachers’ union plans to promote a version of Holocaust remembrance that does not mention Jews, according to its 2025 handbook, which references “victims of the Holocaust from different faiths” and teaches that Israel was founded through “forced, violent displacement and dispossession,” its most recent guide for members shows.

The National Education Association, which represents nearly three million public school teachers and education workers, outlined the priorities in its 2025 handbook.

The NEA publishes the document each year as a guide on the group’s priorities and strategic goals for the association’s national and state leaders, staff, and members.

It includes the NEA’s bylaws and is updated with any new resolutions and policy positions the union has endorsed.

The news comes amid a surge in both anti-Semitism and anti-Israel extremism at public schools and within teachers’ unions themselves.

The NEA Representative Assembly—the union’s parliamentary body—passed a resolution to boycott the Anti-Defamation League’s Holocaust education materials earlier this month, a vote the union’s leadership rejected.

The NEA handbook, though, indicates that union leadership does back the extremist anti-Israel and anti-Jewish positions of many of its members.

The handbook says the union will “promote the celebration of International Holocaust Remembrance Day” by “recognizing more than 12 million victims of the Holocaust from different faiths, ethnicities, races, political beliefs, genders, and gender identification, abilities/disabilities, and other targeted characteristics.”

The description does not mention the attempted extermination of the Jewish people by the Nazis.

The book does, however, give a lengthy description of its plans to “educate members and the general public about the history of the Palestinian Nakba,” while presenting a skewed version of Israel’s founding that demonizes the Jewish state.

“The Nakba, meaning ‘catastrophe’ in Arabic, refers to the forced, violent displacement and dispossession of at least 750,000 Palestinians from their homeland in 1948 during the establishment of the state of Israel,” said the handbook.

“Educating about the Nakba is essential for understanding the Palestinian diaspora narrative and experience, including the ongoing trauma of our Palestinian American students today. Teaching about the Nakba fosters critical thinking and empathy among students, promoting a deeper understanding of historical injustices and their contemporary ramifications.”

On the same page, the NEA outlines as another priority the task of teaching its members that anti-Zionism is not anti-Semitism.

“NEA will use existing digital communication tools to educate members about the difference between anti-Zionism and antisemitism,” the handbook reads.

“NEA will use its existing media outlets to defend educators’ and students’ academic freedom and free speech in defense of Palestine at K-12 schools, colleges, and universities.”
