Florida officials have long accused the Biden administration of obstructing the state’s investigation into the attempted assassination.

Florida is charging Ryan Routh with attempted first-degree murder and terrorism for allegedly plotting to assassinate then-Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump at Trump’s West Palm Beach golf course in September, state attorney general James Uthmeier (R.) announced Thursday.

“After 206 days of stonewalling by the federal government that stemmed from days of the Biden administration, I am able to now announce that my office is charging Mr. Routh for the attempted first-degree murder of President Trump, as well as a charge for terrorism,” Uthmeier said in a video on X.

Routh is also facing federal charges, to which he has pleaded not guilty.

Florida officials have long accused the Biden administration of obstructing the state’s investigation into the attempted assassination, even though Florida governor Ron DeSantis (R.) issued an executive order that authorized state agencies to pursue charges against Routh.

In October, then-Florida attorney general Ashley Moody (R.) filed a federal lawsuit seeking to prevent the Biden Justice Department from interfering with the state’s probe.

Uthmeier in Thursday’s video reiterated the “major roadblocks” that his office and law enforcement partners faced during Biden’s presidency, saying that “Biden and his attorney general sought to frustrate our efforts and block our investigation into [Routh].”

“The leadership of U.S. attorney general Pam Bondi and FBI director Kash Patel was instrumental in preserving Florida’s sovereign authority to do what is right and bring justice where it is due,” Uthmeier continued. “We now have a federal government willing to work together to pursue justice.”

Routh is scheduled to appear in federal court on September 8.

The 59-year-old, who fled the golf course without firing his weapon after being spotted by the Secret Service, praised himself and previous would-be Trump assassin Thomas Crooks as “ready to die for freedom and democracy.”

Ryan Routh, the second person to attempt to assassinate President-elect Donald Trump, sent Politico a letter from jail that echoes Democratic rhetoric and calls Trump a “dictator.”

In the four-page letter, written before the presidential election, Routh warned that if Trump were to win, the United States needed to “remove the power of our military by the President and place it with Congress before January.”

“We must limit all Presidential power before Trump seizes our country,” Routh wrote.

Routh attempted to assassinate Trump at the then-candidate’s West Palm Beach, Fla., golf course in September but fled the scene without firing his weapon after the Secret Service spotted him.

The 58-year-old has pleaded not guilty and is awaiting trial at a federal detention center in Miami.

Trump blamed President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris for inspiring Routh’s attempt, citing Biden’s and Harris’s campaign-trail claims that he is a “threat to democracy.”

“[Routh] believed the rhetoric of Biden and Harris, and he acted on it,” Trump said. “Their rhetoric is causing me to be shot at, when I am the one who is going to save the country, and they are the ones that are destroying the country—both from the inside and out.”

Routh praised himself and previous would-be assassin Thomas Crooks as “ready to die for freedom and democracy.”

Crooks tried to assassinate Trump during a July rally in Butler, Pa., striking Trump in the left ear, killing one attendee, and injuring two others before being fatally shot by the Secret Service.

Routh sent a similar letter to the Palm Beach Post before the election that also referred to Trump as a “dictator.”

“Palm Beach should be leading the way and guiding our country hopefully to choose democracy over a dictator,” that letter reads.

The man charged with attempting to assassinate Donald Trump after allegedly positioning himself with a rifle outside one of the former president’s Florida golf courses on Sept. 15 pleaded not guilty on Monday to five federal charges.

Ryan Routh, 58, entered the plea to charges that include attempted assassination of a major presidential candidate during a hearing in federal court. He has already been ordered to remain in jail to await a trial.

Prosecutors have said Routh intended to kill Trump as he golfed at Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach.

Routh condemned the Republican presidential candidate in a self-published book and dropped off a letter left months earlier with an associate referencing an attempted assassination on Trump, according to prosecutors.

“This was an assassination attempt on Donald Trump but I failed you,” the suspect wrote, according to a court filing by prosecutors.

Lawyers for Routh suggested at a Sept. 23 court hearing that the letter may have been an attempt by their client at gaining publicity and highlighted what they called Routh’s efforts to promote democracy in Ukraine and Taiwan.

Routh hid outside a fence overlooking the sixth hole of the course, where authorities found an AK-47-style rifle, a bag of snacks, a digital camera, and bags containing metal plates meant to withstand return fire by the U.S. Secret Service, according to prosecutors.

A Secret Service agent patrolling the course ahead of Trump spotted Routh and opened fire after noticing the rifle sticking through a fence. Routh fled and was later arrested along a Florida highway, prosecutors said.

Routh was initially charged with gun-related offenses. An indictment last week added the attempted assassination charge along with assault on a federal officer and possessing a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence.

The Florida incident was the second apparent assassination attempt on Trump in a roughly two-month span, raising questions about protection of the candidate ahead of the Nov. 5 election.

A gunman wounded Trump’s right ear and killed an attendee at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on July 13 before being killed by a Secret Service sniper.
