The pair of friends had gone traveling to “clear their heads” and have fun in the U.S.

The two Israelis who were injured in the New Orleans terror attack last week were a pair of reservists who had battled Hamas and Hezbollah terrorists for most of the war and had gone on a trip afterward to “clear their heads,” The New York Post reported Saturday.

Israel’s consul general the Southwest United States, Elad Shoshan told the paper that the pair were “best friends” in their mid-to-late twenties who had served for over a year and were traveling for fun after their stressful service.

“They came here to relax, to travel. Now that interrupted in the most horrific way,” Shoshan said, calling it a “tragic irony” that they had been hurt on holiday and not while doing battle.

“They left the terror of one country and never expected to be victims of it in another,” he told the paper.

One is still in serious condition, having suffered head trauma that has already required two “life-saving” operations, the consul general said. He will need more surgeries for other injuries as well.

“He’s in severe pain all over his body,” said Shoshan, who flew to the hospital from his base in Houston, Texas to offer any official help he could immediately after it became known that Israelis had been hurt.

The second man is in moderate but stable condition, having undergone two operations for internal injuries.

Shoshan described how the man emotionally said the Shema prayer for his critically injured friend’s full recovery.

New Orleans had been the reservists’ second to-last stop of their six-week visit before returning to Israel.

Their families, who flew from Israel to be at their sides, prefer that their names be withheld at this time.

They are being warmly supported by the local Jewish community, which is some 12,000 strong.

“The road ahead will be challenging, but we remain optimistic and remain hopeful for their speedy recovery,” the father of the severely injured Israeli told the paper.

The two men had been partying on the streets of the city’s historic French Quarter early Wednesday morning, celebrating New Year’s Eve along with hundreds of others when Texan Shamsud-Din Jabbar rammed a rented pick-up truck into the revelers.

He then got out and started shooting people, murdering 14 and injuring some 30 others in total, including at least two police officers, before being killed by their colleagues.

An FBI investigation found that the former IT specialist for the American army, who served for almost a year in Afghanistan, had booked the truck rental in mid-November, suggesting that he had been planning the attack for at least six weeks.

On Friday, the federal agency said that two improvised explosive devices had also been planted in coolers in the area of the historic French Quarter where the ramming took place, and the transmitter to detonate them were found in Jabbar’s truck.

Bomb-making materials were also found in the nearby Airbnb home he had rented and had tried to burn down unsuccessfully before setting out on his killing spree.

Jabbar had posted videos online saying that he had joined the ISIS terror organization, and during a search of his Houston home, the authorities found a Quran open to a verse about martyrdom.

Shoshan said that Israel and the U.S. are fighting “the same ideology, the same enemy,” equating ISIS with Hamas, both of which are Muslim extremist groups, as the IDF continues to battle Hamas after its terrorists led an invasion and massacre of 1,200 last October 7.

Soudan’s mosque is located just blocks away from Jabbar’s north Houston neighborhood, which is known for its Muslim population.

Shamsud-Din Jabbar, the Islamic terrorist who killed 14 people in the New Year’s Eve attack on New Orleans, lived near a Houston mosque led by a radical imam who once preached that Hitler massacred Jews because “they like to take control of the economy,” video footage shows.

The Jewish people “have many problems, but that’s one of the main problems—they like to take control of the economy,” Imam Eiad Soudan of Houston’s Masjid Bilal mosque said in November 2023, according to footage released by the Middle East Media Research Institute.

“Everywhere they go, whatever is the rule, as long as they get to the goal, the means don’t matter.”

“They seek corruption in the land,” Soudan continued. “Hitler hated the Israelites so bad because of the economy thing, they were in control of the economy.” He referred to Hitler as “this guy … with the nice moustache.”

Soudan’s mosque is located just blocks away from Jabbar’s north Houston neighborhood, which is known for its Muslim population.

While it’s unclear if Jabbar himself attended the mosque—one of the terrorist’s former neighbors told CNN that he “knew Jabbar was Muslim” but had “never seen Jabbar at the nearby mosque”—police blocked off the building on Wednesday.

Shortly thereafter, Masjid Bilal reportedly issued a social media post urging its members to ignore media inquiries and speak to the Council on American-Islamic Relations, a prominent anti-Israel group, before cooperating with the FBI.

“If anyone is contacted by the media, it is very important that you do not respond,” the post read. “If approached by the FBI and a response is necessary, please refer to CAIR and ISGH,” a reference to the Islamic Society of Greater Houston, which Masjid Bilal is part of.

“It is crucial that we stay united at this time as we condemn these terrible acts.”

Soudan’s anti-Semitic remarks were made during a youth event, according to MEMRI, which monitors extremist rhetoric. While discussing the history of “Palestine,” Soudan claimed that international support for Israel stems from the fear that Jews will usurp Western economies.

“That is why the other countries don’t want them back,” he said. “So when they support them, they are not supporting them because they love them. It’s like: ‘Please stay there, we’ll do whatever [it takes], stay there, don’t come back.’”

Jews, Soudan added, “spread corruption across the land, and Allah does not like corrupters.”

Masjid Bilal and the Islamic Center of Greater Houston did not respond to requests for comment on Soudan’s remarks and Jabbar’s ties to the mosque. CAIR, which has spent the last year galvanizing anti-Israel forces across America, did not comment on the mosque’s social media message.

Instead, it forwarded an earlier press release condemning Jabbar as a “man with a history of drunk driving and spousal abuse.”

Jabbar, a U.S. Army veteran, was living a “quiet but dutiful life” before the terror attack, the New York Times reported. After “converting to Islam,” however, he began “being all crazy, cutting his hair” and acting erratically, the husband of Jabbar’s first wife told the outlet.

“Mr. Marsh [the husband] said he and his wife stopped allowing the two daughters she shared with Mr. Jabbar, ages 15 and 20, to spend time with him,” the Times wrote.

When he plowed a rented truck into a crowd of New Year’s Eve revelers on Bourbon Street, Jabbar flew a flag affiliated with the Islamic State, the extremist terror group that has long encouraged its followers to conduct so-called lone wolf attacks.

In videos posted to his personal Facebook page prior to and during the attack, Din Jabbar “pledged allegiance to ISIS.”

ISIS has long called on its sympathizers across Europe and the United States to carry out “lone wolf”attacks like the one Jabbar committed. While the terror group has lost control of many Middle Eastern territories in recent years, its radical ideology still reverberates across the globe.

Following the attack in New Orleans, one pro-ISIS Telegram channel celebrated Din Jabbar for attacking “the dogs of the Cross.” Others noted a string of similar attacks in Europe during the New Years, including the stabbing of four people in Italy while they were “celebrating the polytheistic New Year.”

In late October, pro-ISIS outlets encouraged “lone wolf attacks on ‘temples’ in the West,” according to MEMRI. In early July, ISIS-produced publications celebrated a string of such attacks in Europe, saying “they are part of ISIS even if they are not members.”

Al-Qaeda, which shares ISIS’s extremist goals, has published step-by-step guides for would-be terrorists, particularly in the months after Hamas’s Oct. 7 terror spree in Israel. Car rammings and crude bombings are touted as particularly effective for those operating alone.

“The person” who murdered at least fifteen people and injured dozens more in the early morning hours of New Year’s Day in New Orleans “was an Army veteran,” said FBI Assistant Special Agent-in-Charge Alethea Duncan at a press conference on Wednesday afternoon.

“We believe he was [an] honorable discharge. But we’re working through this process to figure out all this information.”

While it’s possible that he could have gotten a dishonorable discharge, this would have been a discordant end to what appears to have been a capable term of service.

So what happened to Shamsud-Din Jabbar to turn him from a loyal soldier of the United States into a bloodthirsty jihad mass murderer? Everyone knows. Few dare say.

Fox News reported Wednesday that Jabbar “was also awarded a variety of distinguishments throughout his service, including a Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.” Ironic.

Also: “His awards included the Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal with Campaign star, Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Army Reserve Component Overseas Training Ribbon, NATO Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Parachutist Badge, and the Driver and Mechanic Badge.”

Now a mere glance at our soft, woke, combat-free generals with their chests bedecked with more medals than a Soviet Premier ever sported is enough to demonstrate that this is the age of the Participation Trophy Army.

The military hands out medals these days as if they were candy bars on Halloween. Nevertheless, it’s clear that Shamsud-Din Jabbar was a perfectly reasonable soldier, competent if not distinguished. So what went wrong?

The New York Times offered some clues toward an answer when it reported Wednesday that Jabbar “grew increasingly devout” in his observance of Islam.

The paper said that he was a convert to the religion, and that the jihadi’s brother, Abdur Jabbar claimed “that they had been brought up Christian but that his brother had long ago converted to Islam.”

Yet apparently that conversion took place long ago, for Abdur Jabbar added: “As far as I know he was a Muslim for most of his life.” Brother Jabbar concluded with another improbable claim: “What he did does not represent Islam. This is more some type of radicalization, not religion.”

Well, maybe. But after the jihadi Jabbar had been killed in a firefight with police, an Islamic State flag was found in his truck, and he was discovered to have made several videos in which he “pledged allegiance to ISIS.”

Dwayne Marsh, the husband of Shamsud-Din Jabbar’s ex-wife, said that the New Orleans killer “had been acting erratically in recent months, ‘being all crazy, cutting his hair’ after converting to Islam.”

Does the jihadi’s brother believe, or would he have us believe, that Shamsud-Din Jabbar misunderstood the faith for which he gave his life? The answer is obviously yes, but only the most naïve and ill-informed could possibly fall for this.

The left caricatures the Islamic State as an outfit of nitwits who profess to follow Islam scrupulously but actually don’t follow it at all. Reality is quite different, and less compatible with woke sensibilities.

I’ve quoted the texts from the Qur’an and Sunnah exhorting Muslims to wage war against and subjugate non-Muslims in innumerable books and articles.

Most Americans still don’t know such passages exist, and wouldn’t care if they did. Others are sure that they’re counterbalanced by numerous passages exhorting peace and tolerance (they aren’t) or that they’re hedged around by an interpretative tradition that blunts their literal force (no go on this also).

The unpleasant and unwelcome fact is that Islam teaches love for killing (see Qur’an 2:191 and 4:89, cf. 9:5) and death (Qur’an 62:6).

Pointing out this fact will get you vilified, defamed, deplatformed, marginalized, and silenced, but none of that makes it any less a fact.

Quite simply, Shamsud-Din Jabbar got deeply involved in a death cult, and that’s what turned him from a defender of Americans into a murderer of Americans.

American government and law enforcement officials, like their counterparts all over the Western world, have been resolute in ignoring the aspects of Islam that make for what we saw in New Orleans on the morning of New Year’s Day.

But here again, ignoring them will not make them disappear. The sooner we adopt a more realistic approach to Islam and what it can do to a human being, the fewer people we will have who take the road that Shamsud-Din Jabbar traveled. And that will to the benefit of everyone.
