By Shepol Abbasi, Middle East Forum

For more than two weeks, truck drivers across Iran have shut off their engines; others leave their trailers half-open as a sign of solidarity when forced to work.

The National Union of Iranian Truckers declared, “We stand not out of stubbornness, but out of dignity.” Despite threats, arrests, and reported beatings, drivers remain steadfast.

The grievances driving the strikes now extend beyond the initial imposition of a three-tier diesel pricing system and rising insurance premiums to wages, job security, political repression, and institutional distrust.

Delayed freight payments, meanwhile, exacerbate the financial strain on truckers.

The government has responded with denial and suppression. Security forces have arrested drivers, including prominent figures like Shahaab Darabi, a trucker from Eslamabad-e Gharb.

Simultaneously, officials seek to co-opt others and break the strike by offering incentives such as additional fuel rations to those who continue working.

A state official dismissed the protests as the result of “foreign Persian language media incitement,” accusing these outlets of trying to portray Iranian roads as unsafe.

Law enforcement has arrested some drivers. Authorities pressure local figures to break the strike’s momentum. Public support for drivers is mounting. So, too, is the support of other unions.

In recent months, teachers, nurses, and industrial workers have taken to the streets. The growing protests reflect resistance that now cuts across professions, regions, and classes.

Prominent figures such as Nobel Laureate Narges Mohammadi and filmmaker Jafar Panahi endorse the protests, which have spread to over 150 towns and cities across 31 provinces.

The internal unrest is Iran’s Achilles’ heel as the Trump administration continues to seek a nuclear deal. Potential new U.S. sanctions could throw fuel on the fire labor unrest represents.

Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei has tried to maintain a balancing act, projecting defiance while hinting at compromise. But President Donald Trump’s strategy has boxed in the regime.

The Islamic Republic finds itself unable to advance without losing face or retreat without deeper collapse.

While Iranian officials frequently blame sanctions for the country’s economic suffering, the deeper root is systemic corruption. For decades, military and security institutions have consolidated economic control, creating a rentier economy plagued by mismanagement.

As one trucker put it, “Yes, we’re under sanctions. But that’s not where this pain comes from. It comes from the full pockets of men who’ve never bought a single tire in their lives.”

The perfect storm of strikes, inflation, and eroding public trust represents the Islamic Republic’s most serious internal crisis in years. The protests are no longer scattered or short-lived.

In this climate, even a half-open trailer can carry the weight of something far greater: a storm gaining momentum across Iran’s roads and its Islamic republic.
