Nearly three years after the October 7th massacre, a new documentary is exploring a question often overlooked: What happened after the cameras left?

As Israel observes Tisha B’Av, the saddest day on the Jewish calendar, a new documentary is offering a different perspective on the aftermath of the October 7th Hamas massacre.

Just Tell Me You’re Alive, the first documentary produced by Moral Edge, one of Israel’s newest media platforms, premieres Wednesday evening as Tisha B’Av begins.

Rather than concentrating on the atrocities themselves, the film follows seven Israeli families whose lives were forever changed and examines how they responded in the months that followed.

The documentary includes families who lost sons defending Israel or attending the Nova music festival, as well as families whose loved ones survived Hamas captivity and eventually returned home.

Zach ‘Zorba’ Grashin, director of the film, shares his vision on a Moral Edge podcast.

Together, their stories paint a portrait of resilience, faith, and determination in the face of unimaginable loss.

Director Zach Grashin said the filmmakers intentionally chose to focus on the response to October 7th rather than the attack itself.

“We didn’t want to make a film that’s simply, ‘Jews lost a lot of stuff on October 7.’ We’ve seen that. We know that,” Grashin said. “This movie really was about the way Jews—and I would say Israelis even more so—deal with loss, tragedy and adversity in a way that is beyond admirable.”

One of the greatest challenges, Grashin said, was earning the trust of grieving families and asking them to relive some of the most painful moments of their lives.

“We had to ask families to potentially spend two hours crying in front of a camera,” he said, adding that the production team felt a profound responsibility to honor every family’s story with dignity.

The documentary takes its title from a phrase spoken by one of the mothers, Jen Airley, before the war whenever she ended a conversation with her adventurous son Binyamin: “Just tell me you’re alive.”

After October 7th, those words came to reflect the desperate hope shared by countless Israeli families.

The documentary tells the stories of parents who lost sons defending Israel or attending the Nova music festival, alongside families whose loved ones survived captivity and eventually returned home.

Grashin said the film ultimately seeks to capture a defining characteristic of Israeli society.

“They’ve chosen to redirect those emotions and do something productive,” he said. “That’s actually something we see widespread across Israel.”

He believes remembrance alone is not enough.

“If all we do is remember that something was bad, then we become the victims,” Grashin said. “But if we remember that this undeniably awful thing happened, it brought us together and will keep us together, then I think the movie was a success.”

The film represents Moral Edge’s first feature-length documentary after building a growing audience through its interviews, podcasts, and original video content focused on Israel, Judaism, and the moral challenges facing the Jewish world.
