President Trump puts Russia on notice that attack is coming.

Brushing aside Russia’s pledge to repel any attack targeting Syria, President Trump used his infamous Twitter feed to put Moscow on notice that a response to Syrian President Assad’s use of chemical weapons is on the way.

“Russia vows to shoot down any and all missiles fired at Syria,” Trump tweeted. “Get ready Russia, because they will be coming, nice and new and ‘smart!’ You shouldn’t be partners with a Gas Killing Animal who kills his people and enjoys it!”

Although Russia, Syria and Iran forcefully deny that chemical weapons were deployed on the rebel-held city of Douma, the US and its allies claim that they have evidence validating the charge.

The precise timing and nature of the attack remains unknown but it is being reported that the  President’s national security team is advocating for a something more robust than the 59 Tomahawk missiles launched by the US against the  Al Sharyat airfield one year ago.

Earlier in the week, the White House spoke of working to build support for an international response to Syria that would emphasize that the use of chemical weapons is a red-line no nation should feel comfortable crossing.

Currently, France and Britain are in consultation with the US concerning a coordinated response.

In a separate but related statement, Israel issued its own stark warning to the Russia-Syria-Iran triad should the war of words evolve into open conflict.

Senior defense officials made it clear that “Assad’s regime and Assad himself will disappear from the map and the world if the Iranians do try to harm Israel or its interests from Syrian territory…”Our recommendation to Iran is that it does not try to act, because Israel is determined to continue on this issue to the very end”.
