In addition to the humans credited for playing a crucial role in the killing of ISIS leader Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi last weekend, a dog is also being heralded as a hero.

On Monday, President Donald Trump tweeted a photo of the canine and wrote that it had done “a great job in capturing and killing the leader of ISIS.”

The dog “chased…Al-Baghdadi into a tunnel, forcing him to blow himself up,” reported Breitbart.

According to the U.S. account of events, Al-Baghdadi died by detonating a suicide vest after escaping into a dead-end tunnel as elite American special forces closed in.

“NEW detail. A US official confirms that the dog used in the Baghdadi raid is a Belgian Malinois. FYI: Same breed as Cairo, the dog used in the Bin Laden raid,” tweeted ABC senior Pentagon correspondent Luis Martinez.

Army Gen. Mark Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, who hailed the dog’s “tremendous service,” said that the canine was slightly wounded in the operation, reports USA Today.

However, “the dog is still in theater, returned to duty with its handler,” said Milley, as cited by Breitbart.

“Pentagon officials are also looking at whether the dog is eligible for a Purple Heart, but indicated it could depend on the extent of the injuries,” said the conservative news outlet.

While the canine was a hero, al-Baghdadi “died like a dog,” said the U.S. president. “He died like a coward…whimpering and crying and screaming all the way,” Trump added.

“Baghdadi and the losers who worked for him, and losers they are, they had no idea what they were getting into. In some cases, they were very frightened puppies,” the president said.
