United Arab Emirates wants to colonize Mars

The UAE plans to colonize and populate Mars by 2117.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) unveiled its plan to colonize Mars in the coming century.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the vice president, prime minister and ruler of Dubai, and Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Abu Dhabi Crown Prince and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, launched the “Mars 2117 Project” at the sidelines of the 5th World Government Summit in Dubai last week.

The venture aims to establish the first inhabitable human settlement in Mars by 2117.

“Exploring the space is an old human dream, where our objective is that the UAE leads international efforts to realize this dream,” Bin Rashid said in a statement.

The UAE is among the top 10 countries in the world that invest in the space sciences.

“Human ambitions have no limits, and whoever looks into the scientific breakthroughs in the current century believes that human abilities can realize the most important human dream,” bin Zayed said, adding that the UAE intends to enlarge its investment in the sphere.

“The new project is a seed that we plant today, and we expect future generations to reap the benefits, driven by its passion to learn to unveil a new knowledge,” bin Zayed said. “The landing of people on other planets has been a longtime dream for humans. Our aim is that the UAE will spearhead international efforts to make this dream a reality.”

Bin Zayed said that the initial focus is developing the UAE educational system so their “sons” will be able to “lead scientific research across the various sectors.”

He said the knowledge will be shared with international research institutions, as the objective includes contributing to improving lives on earth as well, mainly in the domains of transportation, energy and food.

In 2015, the UAE announced its Mars Probe mission to send the Arab world’s first spacecraft to the Red Planet in 2021.
