World Jewish Congress calls to ban Neo-Nazi group after it blocks Holocaust exhibition

Neo-Nazis from the Nordic Resistance Movement in Sweden blocked a photo exhibition portraying Holocaust survivors.

Neo-Nazis from the Nordic Resistance Movement (NMR) disrupted a Holocaust photo exhibition in Stockholm, Sweden on Tuesday. In response, the World Jewish Congress renewed its call urging the Swedish government to outlaw the group, which is registered as a political party.

“The Nordic Resistance Movement is a dangerous organization which has absolutely no place in civilized society, let alone politics,” the World Jewish Congress said in a statement on its website.

“Its despicable demonstration today outside a Holocaust exhibit at the Politician’s Week in Almedalen is just the latest in its extensive track record of aggressive public actions, further underscoring the fact that its sole mission is to terrorize, and to callously eliminate ethnic and religious minorities from Sweden’s diverse national fabric.”

NMR is described as a terrorist organization that aims to abolish democracy and oppose non-white immigration to Sweden. Its leaders have said that they would use “bloodshed” to achieve their goals. The organization distributes leaflets and makes public speeches in support of neo-Nazism.

The exhibition was created by the famous Swedish photographer Sanna Sjöswärdin, in collaboration with the Raoul Wallenberg Academy and Fotografiska. Called, “Fading Stories-Pass Them On,” it includes unique portraits of Holocaust survivors using innovative technology through an app and films to inspire education and discussions on the Holocaust.

It is intended to spread the stories of those who survived the Holocaust. Materials have been created for schools in order that future generations should be educated about the Holocaust.

The show is part of a larger exhibition for the “National Day for Courage and Civilization” and “Raoul Wallenberg Day, on August 27.

As reported by the Swedish national newspaper Expressen, on the exhibition’s opening day, a group of neo-Nazis from NMR first blocked the entrance to the building and then entered the exhibition room. Additional neo-Nazis were already inside the hall.

As per witness testimony, one shouted, “F…ing myths.”

“At a time of rising antisemitism and violent political extremism, it is imperative that the Swedish government take a firm legal stand against any movement that seeks to undermine its democratic values and constitutional order,” wrote the World Jewish Congress in its appeal.

“We support the previous statements of Swedish PM Stefan Löfven that the government has commenced efforts to strengthen the legal framework in order to ban NMR and violent organizations of its type.”
