Series of minor earthquakes rattles Israel’s north

Israel was rattled by a series of tremors with their epicenter near Tiberias. No one was injured and no major damage was done.

Two minor seismic temblors shook Israel’s north Thursday morning, after four tremors hit Wednesday.

The most severe quake was registered Wednesday at a magnitude of 4.7 on the Richter scale. Earlier the area was shaken by a 4.0 magnitude tremor.

These earlier quakes were felt by Israeli residents as far south as Tel Aviv, Modiin and Jerusalem, and also in Lebanon and Syria to the north.

The epicenter of the earthquake was in the Lower Galilee, around nine kilometers north of Tiberias.

No injuries or damage were recorded.

A similar series of earthquakes occurred in this region in 2013.

Israel is located in a delicate area of the world along what is known as the East African Rift, which runs along Israel’s border with Jordan.

A major earthquake hit the region in 1927. It was a 6.2-magnitude tremor that killed hundreds and destroyed large parts of Safed.

In 2016, a Knesset committee investigated the matter and found that the country is not adequately prepared for a major earthquake in the region.
