Report: Hamas pursuing military foothold in Syria

The reported outreach reflects Hamas’ effort to develop new relationships with Syria’s post-Assad leadership.

Hamas is seeking to establish a military presence in Syria by building ties with the country’s new interim government, led by President Ahmed al-Sharaa, Asharq Al-Awsat reported, as the Palestinian terrorist group looks to expand its regional operations.

The report said Hamas has been working to establish a military base in Syria as part of broader regional realignments and the group’s shifting center of gravity.

The effort comes despite what was described as the Syrian administration’s complex and often skeptical approach toward Palestinian factions.

Asharq Al-Awsat reported that members of the government in Damascus have been approached about establishing a foothold in the country.

The group would operate alongside other Palestinian factions, including Palestinian Islamic Jihad.

The reported outreach reflects Hamas’ effort to develop new relationships with Syria’s post-Assad leadership while adapting to changing political and security dynamics in the region.

Following Israeli airstrikes in Syria, Hamas issued official statements expressing solidarity with Damascus.

The group condemned the strikes as violations of international law, signaling public support for the country’s new leadership even as contacts between the sides continue.

The report said Hamas has also indicated that it is open to working with the new Syrian government as part of efforts to counter regional isolation.

At the same time, the group is recalibrating its broader regional strategy by placing greater emphasis on Turkey.

Observers cited by Asharq Al-Awsat said Hamas views the establishment of operations in Syria as a tactical move intended to create another front against Israel.

The reported effort coincides with the group’s search for new operational space as regional alliances continue to shift.

While Hamas is pursuing closer engagement with Damascus, the report said Syria’s interim authorities have maintained a cautious approach toward Palestinian organizations despite allowing the group to establish a presence in the country.
