Trump responds to Iranian threats to hit US bases

President says Iran “won’t believe” what he has planned should it hit US military bases in the Middle East in retaliation for American strikes.

President Donald Trump responded over the weekend to threats by Iranian leaders against American military bases and commercial assets in the Middle East, warning that any retaliatory strikes by Iran against the US would be met with unprecedented action.

On Sunday night, Trump spoke with reporters aboard Air Force One amid escalating violence in Iran, after a human rights monitor group claimed 544 people were slain during anti-regime protests.

When asked for his response to threats by senior Iranian officials, who said that Tehran could strike US bases and commercial assets in the region if American forces strike Iran, Trump warned that the administration has prepared unprecedented “options” against the regime.

“If they do that, we will consider things – targets – that they wouldn’t believe,” the president said.

“If they do that, we will hit them at levels that they’ve never been hit before. They won’t even believe it. I have options that are so strong. So, I mean, that if they did that, it would be met with a very, very powerful force,” Trump added.

On Saturday, the speaker of the Iranian parliament, Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf, said Iran could carry out preemptive strikes against Israel and the US, including military bases and ships and commercial assets.

Qalibaf accused the US and Israel of aiding anti-regime protesters, calling the support a hostile act against Iran.

“We do not consider ourselves limited to reacting after the action,” he said. “We will act based on any objective signs of a threat.”

Trump mocked a correspondent representing CNN after she asked him whether he believes Iran takes his repeated warnings to the regime not to use deadly force against protesters.

“I think so,” Trump said. “Don’t you think so, CNN? Don’t you think so?”

“Wouldn’t you say that they probably do at this point? After going through it for years with me, being hit: Soleimani, al-Baghdadi, the Iran nuclear threat wiped out. Wouldn’t you say that they do after all of the things that we’ve done? What a stupid question.”
