Two IDF soldiers were killed and several others were wounded in a massive car accident on Route 6 on Tuesday night.
An initial inquiry shows that a convoy of IDF Hummers was driving slowly on the sidelines of Route 6, one of the main arteries in the country, when three vehicles were hit by a speeding truck. The police believe the driver lost control of the truck.
United Hatzalah volunteer paramedic Muawia Kabha, who was the first to arrive at the scene of the accident, recounted that as he was driving near the Nitzanei Oz intersection, he heard via his United Hatzalah radio that there was a serious accident on Highway 6.
“I rushed over and arrived in less than a minute and found a very difficult scene involving numerous vehicles in a major accident. I immediately requested backup from the dispatch and command center and asked that the Fire and Rescue Department be sent to extricate those trapped inside their vehicles. I, together with other EMS volunteers ho arrived, treated numerous people who were not trapped inside vehicles. We provided first aid treatment to those suffering injuries at the scene,” Kabha said.
A total of 10 IDF soldiers were wounded in the accident, including one seriously, one moderately and another eight who sustained light wounds.
The two fatalities were identified as Stf. Sergeant Bar Yaacobian, 19, of Netiv Ha’asarah in the south, and Stf. Sergeant Eshto Tesfo, 21, of Petah Tikvah.
All victims were of the Golani Brigade.
The truck driver, a resident of east Jerusalem, was briefly hospitalized and then was detained by the police for questioning.
Police have launched a joint investigation with the military police into the incident.
