4,000 soldiers from Turkey, Indonesia, Egypt, Azerbaijan to police Gaza Strip – report

Pakistan also reportedly eyeing sending troops to join Egyptian-led force tasked with securing the Gaza Strip.

Egypt is slated to lead 4,000 soldiers from Muslim-majority countries around the world to the Gaza Strip to enforce the fragile truce between Israel and Hamas, an Emirati news outlet reported on Monday.

Citing unnamed sources, The National claimed that the international force set to be deployed in the Gaza Strip and tasked with enforcing the US-backed peace plan would include at least 4,000 troops supplied by four countries including Egypt – which would retain command over the mission – Turkey, Indonesia, and Azerbaijan.

Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty told The National that Cairo has called on the United Nations Security Council to vote on a binding resolution giving the new armed force authority “as soon as possible.”

Abdelatty envisioned the new four-nation armed force receiving a clear but limited mandate from the Security Council, giving full UN backing for its powers to secure the Strip, while leaving the internal administration of the coastal enclave to the new technocratic committee being assembled.

The US-led “Board of Peace” provided for in the White House’s 20-point peace plan would manage the flow of humanitarian aid and distribute money earmarked for Gaza’s rehabilitation, Abdelatty said.

“First, we need a Security Council resolution to adopt this plan as early as possible and to give legitimacy to the international force,” Abdelatty said.

“This is very important. Egypt is ready to participate in any framework, but under certain parameters.”

On Monday, an Israeli delegation landed in Egypt for talks with officials from Turkey, Egypt, and Qatar regarding the post-war administration of Gaza and security arrangements in the Strip – including proposals for an Egyptian-led multinational force, Kan Reshet Bet reported.

Pakistan is also considering sending troops to join the Egyptian-led force, an American Defense Department official and a former US security official told Politico in a report published on Sunday.
