Hate crimes targeting Jews soared in New York City last month, according to police data.

Antisemitic hate crimes surged in New York City in May, accounting for about 60% of all confirmed hate crimes in the city, according to new police data.

The NYPD recorded 41 confirmed anti-Jewish hate crimes last month, up from 24 in May 2025. The figure represented 41 of the city’s 68 confirmed hate crimes for the month.

The increase came even as overall major crime fell in the city.

The NYPD said major crime declined 10.6% citywide in May and more than 6% in the transit system, while shootings and murders remained at historic lows for the first five months of the year.

The May antisemitism figures also marked a jump from recent months.

The 41 confirmed anti-Jewish hate crimes were 46% higher than the average for the previous three months, when police confirmed 30 anti-Jewish hate crimes in April, 32 in March and 21 in February.

Jews make up roughly 10% of New York City’s population but were the target of more than half of the city’s confirmed hate crimes in May.

The NYPD changed its hate-crime reporting earlier this year, distinguishing between reported complaints still under investigation and confirmed hate crimes that meet the legal standard under New York law.

Police now publish both categories after criticism that the earlier shift obscured the scale of reported incidents.

Several high-profile antisemitic incidents occurred during the month, including swastika graffiti targeting Jewish sites and neighborhoods, vandalism at a kosher bagel shop in Queens and an assault on a Jewish subway rider.

Police also arrested a New York University student this week in connection with a Nazi-themed flag raised over a university building during graduation events in May.

Jewish community officials said the latest figures show that antisemitism remains the city’s most persistent hate-crime category.

The NYPD’s May figures showed five confirmed hate crimes targeting Muslims, three targeting Asians, five based on sexual orientation, one targeting a Hispanic person, one targeting a white person and 10 targeting unspecified religious groups.

There were no confirmed anti-Black hate crimes in May.

So far this year, police have confirmed 152 anti-Jewish hate crimes in New York City, accounting for 57% of the city’s confirmed hate-crime total.

The spike comes amid continued tensions over the Israel-Hamas war and growing concern among Jewish organizations about harassment, vandalism and threats in public spaces, on campuses and near synagogues.

City officials have pointed to stepped-up policing at Jewish events and institutions, including recent synagogue demonstrations and Sunday’s Israel parade, which the NYPD said was among the most heavily protected events in the city’s history.

But the May data underscored that anti-Jewish incidents continue to dominate the city’s hate-crime landscape even as broader crime trends improve.
